Lurontravel Posted June 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 16, 2009 We will be in Haines on Wednesday June 24, 2009. We are looking to do two shore excursions that are available on the ship, but we would like to buy them on shore and save some money. Is the Port of Haines set up with tour sellers the same way that Juneau and Skagway are? We are interested in the Wilderness Kayak Experience and the Alpine Mountain Explorer. Has anyone actually seen these tours sold in port? Thank you Ron

However, my husband and I took the ferry down to go golfing in Haines and the ferry docks right next to the cruise ship. Haines is much smaller and much less touristy than either Skagway or Haines. I would not count on finding a tour straight off the ship. Book one in advance or through your ship.
nocruiseforu Posted June 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 17, 2009 I can't answer the question as to whether the same ours are offered on dock, but you should be able to find some information of available tours on the Haines web site. http://www.haines.ak.us Hope that helps. lovebug33 Posted June 17, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 17, 2009 There were some independent operators a week ago, but it was lake cruises and wildlife experiences. It is nothing like Juneau and Ketchikan. Take an excursion because there is very little to do in town. We spent about 2 hours looking at the town and we exhausted every possibility. And, if you do take an independent operator, do not take the guy in the white van with a green stripe. Our tour guide, who has lived in Haines his whole life, said he is a con man. So, I don't know if that is true or not, but he was pretty adamant to stay away from that guy.
EduTravler Posted June 17, 2009 #5 Share Posted June 17, 2009 I looked on the fast ferry website - I assume the only way to Skagway. Is it really about $70.00 R/T per person? or am I looking at the wrong place.

And if you are going to be there on a Wednesday they seem to be very busy. I would try to make a reservation. http://www.hainesskagwayfastferry.com/ferry.html Bodger
