mtnhappy Posted June 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted June 18, 2009 For those that have been to Alaska, is bug spray necessary at the end of Aug/early Sep? If so, is it necessary along the coast, inland, or everywhere during that time?

Putterdude Posted June 18, 2009 #3 Share Posted June 18, 2009 I have never had a problem with bugs in coastal Alaska however it never hurts to bring some wipes or go to WalMart and purchase one of those small pump bottles of DEET; for the $5 or so it is a good measure. JerseyJaguar Posted June 18, 2009 #4 Share Posted June 18, 2009 The mosquitos were terrible last week in Haines and Juneau in the woods. You'll probably be fine if you stay out of the woods, but all the tour guides had bottles of repellent and told us all to put it on before we got started, and I still got bit through my sock. Meanwhile the week before in Denali I had no bug issues.
1button Posted June 18, 2009 #5 Share Posted June 18, 2009 We are from Wisconsin & we typically hear the mosquitos (our secondary state bird) approaching. At Copper River last week, we saw or felt them them & never heard them. They are large & they bite hard! You can't/shouldn't use high levels of DEET on your face so we did plenty of clapping & swatting when we were vulnerable.
