St John / Trunk Bay - $ and logistics questions

ISLANDER--I thought I read somewhere about a car ferry from red hook? We have a family of 6 and I thought maybe we'd pick up a rental, drive to red hook and then do the car ferry to st. john and not have to do taxis. Also this would be much easier as my husband has multiple sclerosis and is not able to stand for long periods waiting. Do you know anything about this? I can't seem to find the info now. Thanks
