In the immediate area of Taormina there is the small town above Taormina of Castelmola, doable on your own. There are some of the oldest Greek settlement ruins in Giardini Naxos along with a small but nice museum (if you like ruins).

There are the towns along the Cyclops Riviera, Aci Reale and Aci Castello, you would need a private tour operator to see these places or a rental car.

If you have an interest in ruins and history Tindari is also another Greek site.

The wonderful thing about Sicily is the rich and varied history, the fantastic Greek and Roman ruins, Baroque architecture, churches and paintings and some outstanding museums. The unfortunate part is that their distance from the port of Messina place them out of reach for your limited time in port.
