Does a US cell phone work in the Bahamas?

I will be on the 3 night to the Bahamas on the Fantasy. My friend who I am traveling with has a 3 year old son who she will not make it without speaking to. What is the best way for them to talk? Will her cell phone work in the Bahamas since it is not too far away? Do the phone cards you can buy at any drug store work at payphones in the Bahamas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Depends on your provider... check your coverage plan. I know Verizon provides coverage in the Bahamas on certain plans... Your provider should be able to tell you if you will have coverage... good luck!

My Tracfone worked fine because they contract with different networks for service and then use whats available. No one else in our group could get service most of which were Verizon but some were with Sprint. That was last March, things may have changed by now.

I could use my phone in St. Thomas and San Juan last month but not Nassau or St. Maarten. I have Cingular.

My AT&T phone did not work in Freeport a few months ago.

It all depends on the technologies of the phones. GSM based phones should work in the Bahamas; however, CDMA phones do not.

 

Sprint is based on the CDMA network and only works in St. Thomas and San Juan.

I have Tracfone and never had a problem in 5yrs using it to call the States from San Juan or St. Thomas. Thank You for info regarding the Bahamas. Will try it next time I am there.

We were able to get Verizon service on Paradise Island. The phone however was in Analog mode as opposed to digital mode.

I work for Verizon Wireless & you will have very limited & spotted coverage. You should be able to use the phone but as the above posters mentioned only in certain area's. A couple of things to tell your friend if she does have Verizon: It's best if she has a Tri-mode phone & also make sure she calls Customer Care to have International Dialing placed on her account before you guys leave. I have verizon and added international calling and it still did not work at the Atlantis in Nassau

in the bahamas you can get calling cards at all the drug stores. AT least this is what

we did. our cell phone never worked.

We have Nextel and had no service in Nassau or Freeport in May.

Do the calling card/phone cards from the US work in the Bahamas? Such as the ATT ones from Walmart. Thanks
