How far to Reversing Falls from port?

Recommended Posts

How far is it to walk to the Reversing Falls from the port? We will be there beginning of Sept and are wondering if it will be too much. thanks.

If you dock at Long Wharf, it is about 25 to 30 minutes. If you dock at Marco Polo Terminal (aka Pugsley) add another 15 minutes. To see where you dock, go here: http://www.cruisesaintjohn.ca/visitsaintjohn/cruiseschedule.asp

Acey,

We are docking at Pugsley so I guess it is a 40 minute walk. Seems like a long walk - do you think it is too long of a walk? How far in mileage is it? I guess we could do public trans but is it really something that "must be seen" - in other words, is it worth the trip? Are there other things to see along the way if we do walk? Do most people walk or take trans? Sorry for all the questions but I have no idea about this stop other than knowing it is reputed to be beautiful with helpful, friendly people. Thanks!

We walked it last year from Long Wharf - it was around 2 miles. Pugsley adds about another 1/2 mile. The first part of the walk is along the Harbour Passage, which is a very nice pedestrian walkway/bikeway. It is scenic - lots of landscaping, several historic sites, nice views of the harbor. After leaving Harbour Passage, we walked uphill along a fairly industrial road to Reversing Rapids. (I think there is an alternate walking route that stays off the industrial road, but we just took the easiest route.) I have some photos from Reversing Rapids and Harbour Passage on my Webshots page at http://travel.webshots.com/album/565656926QRtaQb?start=84 and http://travel.webshots.com/album/560413468hmFqLI?start=60.

Saint John is a wonderful city - very friendly, very walkable.

To avoid walking along the very busy street, when you come to the observation platform near the end of that section of Harbour Passage, climb the stairs and, instead of turning left along the busy street, cross at the lights and follow the cranberry coloured sidewalk up the hill to Douglas Avenue and turn left. You then have a pleasant residential street to walk along untill you come to Fallsview-(you will see the Jetboat Ride sign). Turn right and walk into the falls viewing area. You can then walk back out onto Douglas Avenue and turn right to the bridge. There is a new viewing area just before you cross the bridge and you can also cross the bridge and there is a vewing area around the restaurant on the other side. The food at the Falls Restaurant is quite good--it is a popular restaurant with locals. If you sit in the back room by a window you can watch the changes in the harbour as you eat and there are often seals feeding under the bridge area.

I think it's a pleasant walk, if you like walking, and if you take Douglas Ave as Sapper1 describes. It is 2.5 miles from Pugsley. Is it worth a specific trip for? In my opinion no. I think most take bus tours, then taxis, then bus, then walking. The time spent walking there and back can be used to discover some interesting sites right near the ship - one of the oldest settled areas in Canada known as Trinity Royal.
