Basic Sony memory card?

I just got a new ony 'point and shoot'. Can I only use a sony brand memory stick or is there a less expensive brand that will work?

Thanks, Salley ( Sony is $40 for 4G)

The one minus with Sony is many of their cameras use ONLY their unique memory stick. As such there are fewer competitors as it isn't an industry standard where anyone can make and sell cards. Thus unlike CF, SD, and MicroSD the prices for the same amount of storage is generally more.

SanDisk is a licensed manufacturer for MS cards. You can find them at Adorama for about the same price as good SDHC cards.

4GB for 24.95: http://www.adorama.com/IDSDMSPV4G.html?searchinfo=sandisk+ms+pro

It says "video" but that is marketing speak for "fast enough to record video". It is the same performance as a 15MBs Ultra II SDHC card.

Any brand is fine. Though a lot of folks think Sony's MS format cards mean only Sony branding and high prices, the truth is the prices are just about the same as SDHC cards (a much more common format) and you can buy Sony, Lexar, Sandisk, and some other smaller brands that are all made in Memory Stick Pro Duo format. BTW - almost every Sony compact camera in the past 3 years uses the same MS Duo format, so I don't think you've got any special type of card that you couldn't find from other makers. MS Duo cards are a fairly common format, considering how many compact cameras Sony sells.

Some newer Sony models that are HD video capable will tell you they take MS PRO DUO cards...these are higher capacity fast cards compatible with memory needed for HD video...however these cameras are also compatible with standard MS Duo cards. Prices for a Sony brand MS Pro Duo 8GB card are running around $33 currently. Sandisk's 8GB version is around $28...so your 4GB price sounds a bit high.
