Help with pre-cruise visit to Athens, Beach Resort

We will be taking a cruise leaving from Piraeus in early September. My tentative plan is to arrive in Athens about 4-5 days before we board, get ourselves to a beach resort for a couple of days, return to Athens so that we can visit the Acropolis and do a walking tour, and then get ourselves to our ship.

Does that sound like a reasonable plan? Would really appreciate any recommendations of a beach resort and /or island we should look into.

There are lots of recommendations of Athens hotels - has anyone stayed at the Athens Gate recently? Would that be a good choice?

We have contacted PK Tours - would that be a suitable choice for our transportation needs? Do they do a walking tour of Athens?

Any tips, suggestions, advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Nafplion is a good choice... is close to Athens (~100 miles, 1 hour and 30 minutes by car), has many beaches (Karathona, Tolo etc) and many taverns (special for fish/sea food).

Very close to Nafplion are Mycenae and Epidavros (if you like historical areas).

Thanks for the feedback. We will definitely research both locations. Any hotel recommendations?

We have also been thinking about Poros. Just wondering which would be a better choice for us.

Thanks again.

We were in Greece last summer - stayed in Vouliagmeni ( about 30 minutes outside Athens) at the beach ....Divani Apollon Palace and Thalasso.

I highly recommend this hotel - they have a shuttle daily except Sunday that will take you and pick up in Athens. Nice beach....wonderful breakfast buffet included and good food in the restaurant. Excellent service.

Check it out...

eclue:rolleyes:

We stayed at an great swimming resort - not beach but swim off the rocks - on the island of Aegina. It's about 1 HR from Piraeus.

They do start to shut down the resorts in mid-sept in Greece so check the dates before you decide on a place.

Check out the Apollo Resort in Aegina Marina. You can take a ferry over and they have a shuttle from the dock. Very small town but beautiful water.

We booked rooms at the Negroponte Resort in Eretrea (90 mins from Athens airport and Piraeus) - 183 euro/night in high season (August) on the Aegean Sea. Highly rated Tripadvisor. Also holding a room at the Divani Apollon Palace, but leaning toward Negroponte. We're there 3 days prior to cruise. Thoughts?

We did a week at the Astir Palace about 30min from Athens in Vouliagmeni area. Great hotel nice private beach area and pool. We used that as a base to do day trips to Athens, Namea wine roads and Delphi. It was very nice to have a relaxing hotel to go back to after being in the city and with hordes of tourists.
