Is Jamaica Safe??

We will be in Montego Bay in June and were thinking we might take a cab from the port to Doctors Cave Beach. I wondered if we wouldn't be better off using the ships transfers. Do they exist and how to get there and back? I know Jamaica has always had a crime issue, but there appears to be an uptick in violent crime in the past year. There were two american medical missionaries that were killed just in the last week. I know this happens almost everywhere, but we want to make sure we have the tip to stay safe with our kids.

As long as you aren't falling down drunk, I think safety is not an issue. Don't go wandering around dark alleys or asking where to buy drugs. Its just common sense, like any place in the USA.

The cruise ship areas and beaches are very touristy, lots of people and actually police everywhere. The vendors can sometimes be pushy, but they are trying to make a living, just tell them no thankyou.
