Kfentress Posted December 10, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 10, 2016 My 16 year old daughter is wanting to spend the day exploring the island from a locals prospective. Has anyone done anything like this here? Advise welcome.
Eleteace Posted December 10, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) I really really hate to be a negative person but I hated Cozumel and felt really pestered there :') It made it onto my worst cruise ports list :p http://cruisingisntjustforoldpeople.co.uk/2016/11/02/worst-cruise-ports-5-ports-which-i-would-not-return-to/ There was a large shopping centre there which felt very made for the tourists. The people in the shops wouldn't take no for an answer... I'm really not sure what else is around. I'm sure it totally is possible to explore the island like a local but don't do what I did and get off and expect to just go for a wander... make sure you plan something and I'm sure you'll have a better experience than me :) Sent from my iPhone using Forums Edited December 10, 2016 by Eleteace
SF Ex-Pat Posted December 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted December 10, 2016 (edited) We went there a few years ago. I ordered a map online. All of the tourist places were near the pier and south. We went north to Playa Azul. It was not such a tourist place. Great beach. A few blocks in from the pier it seemed pretty gritty and I'm not sure it would be a great place to go. Rare crewsweeper Posted December 11, 2016 #8 Share Posted December 11, 2016 Forget the negative comments on this thread....Book a driver for the day via Tours Plaza and take a tour of the entire island, not just the tourist-oriented shopping plaza. Drivers are locals, they all speak English. Here's a link. https://toursplaza.com/ Large threads on this board with reviews and information. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2098656&highlight=driver+for+the+day http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=545681&highlight=driver+for+the+day See the blowholes and rugged coast on the East side, have lunch at a great place there, climb the lighthouse, stop at the ruins, stop at the Tequila Factory, stop at Kaokao Chocolate Factory, have the driver show you the streets and shops locals use not the tourist ones. Have a great day!
