It's not recommended to use a debit card for this. You can either put a cash amount down, in which case they use it as you spend it and you can either put more down as you spend it or get a refund at the end if you don't. Or you can put it on plastic. If you put it on plastic they don't differentiate between credit and debit cards - they all get charged the same. An initial $300 authorization, plus additional authorizations throughout the cruise based on your spending. Say you spend $600 total onboard. You'll probably end up with somewhere in the neighborhood of $900 held in authorizations. Then at the end of the cruise they charge the $600. When the $900 in authorizations gets released is up to your bank. So you could theoretically have $1,500 of your bank account tied up when you only spent $600 onboard. This is why a credit card is preferred, so there's wiggle room for the money to be tied up without affecting your ability to access your funds.
