  1. We purposely came home with a couple of hundred in euro after our last trip knowing that we would be heading back to the eurozone eventually and even if we don't have a trip in mind when we leave next January, we will do the same again, especially if the rates are as low next January as they were this past January. Personally, I hate doing currency conversions in the US; I always feel like I am being taken advantage of and prefer to take my chances with the machines in the airport.

I'm a little OCD with travel so I have to have all the tips for each area in a separate envelope before we leave. My band doesn't charge me a fee so I save a little too

  2. Perhaps philw1776 et al should realise that Viking is NOT an American cruise line; it is from The Rest Of The World, it is run from The Rest of The World and will have many passengers from The Rest of The World seeking to book excursions. With this in mind, is there any valid reason for Viking to schedule excursion booking times to suit east and west American coasts, which are not in The Rest of The World? Or did he mean east and west Atlantic coasts? If there is a problem, perhaps an American cruise line could suit better. Perhaps?

Rawmac, really. We're talking about what time in the US we need to get up to schedule our tours. Philw isn't the one with the issue

  3. We are taking our 2nd Viking cruise later this year and are considering this upgrade. We loved the complimentary wine with lunch and dinner but we are tempted for more. Sounds like cocktails are included as well as better wines? I'm not sure it's the best idea to have a Bloody Mary at breakfast before touring but maybe it's not the worst idea either! I need to learn more about this.

Mostly, we like cocktails before dinner and my husband and our friend like good wine. They also like their Italian liquor after dinner. I think that sea days will get the most activity, lol. It's also nice to have Irish coffee or Bergen coffee.

  4. This'll probably seem like a silly question to all you Americans - but how much do you tip if you order a drink from room service?

We Brits aren't quite as into tipping as you are, and I hate to do the wrong/mean thing!

For a drink, $2/3. That's for two drinks.

  5. Admittedly not difficult at my age, but your post had me confused.

Here in the UK, 'Mothering Sunday', although commonly called 'Mother's Day', is on the fourth Sunday in Lent, and so this year took place on the 26 March.

Well Mother's Day should be everyday even in the U.K., so wishing happy Mother's Day to moms in the U.K. Should be embraced

  6. Fpacifico, she came back to the table and was a little embarrassed but I told her no sweat, I'm in the medical field, didn't bother me at all. I just kept eating. Turns out she's a nurse from Australia and she is the one other person on the cruise that I met that is still working a full time job like me! Everybody was retired.....

Poor thing , on our china cruise, two of the people in our tour group came on board sick with the norovirus. Yea, I caught it. Like you I'm a nurse and my husband is md so we had all our Meds . But our group leader was so worry, she wanted to take me to the hospital. Lol, that didn't happen

  7. Fpacifico,

I asked and was told my mini bar could not be stocked/restocked with either soft drinks or alcohol. I only asked once so do not know if I had kept asking I might have gotten another answer. My husband usually asked for a Coke when we left a bar during the day. I occasionally called room service for a drink..........hoping they would change the silly rules!!!! We were quite far forward so it was an easy to get to the Explore's Lounge to get a drink to go, take it to take to the cabin while getting ready for dinner. If we missed lunch because we returned late it was great to order a glass of wine, the cheese plate and watch was happening on shore from the balcony. Choices are great!

Thanks for info, like you l'll just use room service for our Caribbean cruise.

  8. It is interesting how people look at things differently. To me, sea days means reading a great book in one of the many different places to curl up and read, or just to sit and watch the sea. As I have stated before, we loved the food, and I think the reason for them to dish out the salad is to avoid as much as possible all the handling of the utensils which helps to avoid norovirus problems. When you sign up for a tour with Viking, you know there are going to be more people than a private tour and you just go with the flow!!!!!

I completely agree with you. I'm looking forward to the pools and hot tubs on our sea days. And trying different drinks that I would never try at home. And like you, enjoying a great book with a Norwegian coffee.

  9. Thanks for your experience with the beverage package. We will be doing the Silver beverage package too.

I never thought you could order a drink from room service! Who knew! I would rather just get a drink at a bar and bring it back to my cabin.

I do like the variety of options on Viking: wine, beer at lunch and dinner, beverge package, able to bring wine and spirits on board anytime, and included soda, coffee, bottled water for all.

I think bottled water is unlimited. I thought that in the V categories, if you have the silver spirit beverage package, then you get drink refill in your cabin. No extra snacks but. You get soda and liquor.

  10. Hello - we are interested in doing a pre-cruise extension with Viking in Iceland and are wondering what hotel Viking uses in Reykjavic. Which hotel did they accommodate you in on your trip? Cheers!

It's the Hilton, according to them it's outside center. About a 10 to 20 minute walk
