  1. Haven't used it since my last cruise in 2021. I pretty much agree with ericosmith's comment above. The port info was nice to have available and the bus tracking wasn't particularly good. It can be used any time - aboard or ashore. No harm downloading it and trying it out to see for yourself. You can always delete it if is not what you want.

  2. This video from August 7, 2021 caught my attention because my wife and I were aboard the Duchess (Red Wing to New Orleans) in this video. We were in the dining room having dinner at the time.  I do remember this lock as I have a photo of the power plant that I shot from our dining room table.

Until I saw this video I had no idea we locked through with another boat. The lock is more than capable of doing this. Being in the dining room at the time I wasn't outside (like I usually am) while locking through and wasn't aware of this (dang, I missed it!).

While the video is a bit longer than an hour,if you fast-forward to about 54:00 the Hertiage has exited and the Duchess comes into view as she exits.

They were still using the tow boat on the Aug. 16 sailing.  During the pilot house tour, someone asked how much it was costing AQV and the pilot said $12,000/day.  They sure haven't been making any money on these cruises!

Not to mention the cost of the actual repairs! Thanks.

Thanks!  That is a big help!  Trying to figure out how much clothes to take.

Hopefully someone with more recent experience will chime in. Also, we were on the boat 2 weeks. A shorter cruise....I don't know. Like I said, I have not seen anything in writing from AQ about this.

  5. We were on the Duchess last year for two weeks (Aug 2-16).

I have never seen laundry services mentioned on AQSC's website. That said, we were able to have laundry done a couple times during the cruise. On inquiry I was told to check with our cabin attendent. Indeed she provided a bag on request and it was returned the next day. Although we were told $20 a bag, charges never appeared on our statement when the cruise was over.

This seems to be an unwritten amenity. Also, we were aboard for two weeks.

Don't know what others may have experienced.

  6. We did the Empress in October 2016...no real problems and overall pretty nice. Mostly pleasant sunny days with several showery days. Astoria had to be cancelled due to gale force winds and rain. Would have preferred June/July for longer days but, weren't able to travel until October.

Yes, there are times when fires and other events are more likely but, even in likely times, nothing can happen. Summer/fall tends to be "fire season" on the west coast but exactly when a fire starts can't be predicted. Like hurricanes and other natural events you just don't know at the time you book. This weeks weather can be dramatically different than next. Personally, I don't spend a lot of time trying to dodge future weather events.

Last August, we missed Hurricane Ida (Cat 4) in New Orleans by just a week. We were at the end of the "Mighty MIssissippi" on the Duchess and spending a couple of days in NOLA. Just the luck of the draw as the cruise was booked and paid for a year ahead of time.

    You never know.

What we are finding some staff great and engaging others jobsworths as we call them - my way or no way folks. Clearly the line has potential to be excellent with the right staff.

Wow. That is contrary to our experience on the Duchess last August. All staff we had contact with were very friendly and accomodating. Our room attendant took great care of our cabin; the wait staff in the Dining Room and the River Club and Terrace were right on top of any requests we made. They quickly learned our preferences and quirks and made sure we were satisified.

The onboard staff was definitely an asset for AQSC/AQV!

BTW: I also enjoyed the Grammy Museum and the Sue and Bob King Railroad Museum in Cleveland.

  8. We did the "Mighty Mississippi" on the Duchess last August.

The first evening we spent some time out on the veranda leaving the sliding door open. Yes, I'm aware it shuts off the A/C in the cabin but, that wasn't a problem.

When we returned inside the cabin we found it infested with many flying insects... attracted to the light in the cabin!

After that, the door remaind closed when we were on the veranda in the evenings. Lights off helped too.

  9. We did the Duchess "Mighty Mississippi" last August - Red Wing to New Orleans. Did a mix of premium and HOHO tours. Due to Covid cancellations in 2020 and the re-booking for 2021 along with a wonderful AQSC representative, we somehow wound up with enough OBC to cover all those costs.!

Elvis Presley for sure when in Memphis and we found the General Grant tour in Galena, IL very intersting (Dubque, IA). The town of Galena was charming.

The Vicksburg Battlefield is pretty much all bus except for the Illinois Memorial and the USS Cairo exhibit which was very interesting to me.

The Winona Boat Tour (90 minutes) doesn't sound like much but was actually very interesting and we learned a lot about the river and things associated with it. From wildlife, to barges, tows, and locks a bunch of info that was good to know during the entire cruise..

Hannibal, MO and Burlington, IA were nice town to explore via HOHO.

At Terrene Landing the Mississippi Grammy Museum in Cleveland, MS was pretty nice and I enjoyed the train museum there too. This was all HOHO, no premium.

Last day, the Cajun Pride Swamp Tour in La Place was great. We did that instead of Nottoway Mansion.

All in all, an enjoyable cruise. Only 137 passengers, no testing, no masks onboard except in two towns due to local ordinance.

Here are more than enough images to browse through from our cruise.

  10. Yes, they do have a schedule. IIRC more frequently in the AM than PM. Also posted is the time for the LAST bus! If you want to do an early but, you need to get a "ticket" beginning the evening before. A machine is available by the purser's desk which allows you to do so where you select your departure time. That is done to spread out the passenger load. Later in the day, the "ticket" is not required. You can skip stops and stay longer at stops you like.

You can do the HOHO as many times as you would like and, before/after a premium excursion as well. All, time permitting.

  11. Per the AQSC website, Graceland is included in the Post-Cruise City Stay in Memphis.

    https://www.americanqueensteamboatcompany.com/city-stay-packages/ultimate-music-of-america-memphis-and-nashville/

We toured Graceland last August as a Premium Excursion on the American Duchess "Mighty Mississipi" cruise. Pretty interesting. Memphis was not the beginning or ending of this cruise...just one of many daily stops as we cruised down the river.

  12. I guess AQ is stepping back from getting your own Covid test!

In addition, the cruise line will provide free COVID-19 testing at the pre-cruise hotel prior to embarkation beginning March 19, 2022, according to a press release.

“The resounding feedback from guests and our travel advisor partners over the past two weeks is that people want to cruise now, without complications and uncertainty and our experience checks those boxes,” said Shawn Bierdz, chief operating officer, American Queen Voyages.

We were on the Duches last fall. Boat was half to 3/4 full. River was not open during main dinning. Both were open for other meals.

Same experience for us on the Duchess in August - 137 passengers. The River Club was as you noted.

The Duchess has "The River Club & Terrace". The "The River Grill" sounds like the Empress. Its been a few years but, I believe the grill menu was different than the dining room....we ate there once.
