  1. If you want to enjoy your Suite balcony I would recommend the aft suites rather than the Riviera deck cat S4 suites on the Emerald on her sisters the Crown and the Ruby. The Riviera deck balconies are only 5 feet deep. We were in R405 on the Emerald and the loungers could only be sideways rather than facing the ocean and the balcony table was smaller with only two chairs. You are directly under the pool area on Lido deck. We did not hear much noise from moving of the deck chairs about but others have posted this as an issue. The Lido deck extends beyond the balcony by at least 4 foot so the balcony is well in the shade almost all of the time.

Yes! We were in this exact suite on the emerald. You absolutely could hear all kinds of noise from the Lido deck. I had done a lot of research and I got about 50% yes and 50% no on whether or not I would hear running and music and the sloshing of the pool. We heard it all! Someone correct me, if I'm wrong, but isn't Caribe the deck that has the best balconies for Suites? We always do midship due to my very sensitive motion sickness. So I could never do a aft suite even though their balconies are pretty neat. I have been on one and it was extremely windy on their balcony but not on ours. We were on caribe on the Golden Princess and our balcony was way better.

  2. Pizza is $3.00 to have delivered or head to the Lido deck and grab your own to take to your room and it is Free!

I would think drinks are close to, if not the same as, bar charges.

In room service you can order half size bottles of liquor. I enjoyed getting different drinks every time I go to the bar but i was very particular about what I drink, if I always drink Jack and Coke for instance no matter what, it would probably be worth it to buy the half bottle of Jack even at the inflated price and bring my own coke on board. So there is that benefit.

  3. I feel like I should say that if you are very selective of ingredients that you like, you might have trouble finding things in the IC. A lot of their salads are very, I guess you would say upscale and have a lot of ingredients that a lot of people don't like. For instance on our last cruise I think I'm the only person that got the beat and carrot salad. It was delicious! I had seen it in the buffet the day before and I was so glad to get another chance at it. But they quite often have very unusual types of salad and sandwiches in there. So if you aren't seeing anything you'd like it might be wise to grab a plate from Buffet right before they close and take it to your room if you think you'll need a late-night snack. My husband does that a lot. He doesn't really care from anything from the IC . every once in awhile he's okay with a warm sandwich from there but doesn't like any of the salads! I'm usually up for anything so there's always something I will eat. If we know we're going to have a late night we usually go and get a plate of cheese and crackers and breads from Horizon Court

  4. I'm not good at clicking the reply button for individual post so here goes.

For the poster that says they like the package because they don't like having a big Bill at the end. That's a great point!

For the poster that talks about the coffee not being any better, I have to say that it has always been better than the syrup coffee. Most of the time the syrup coffee is fine with me. I've had a few bad cups but it's not like I won't drink it. But I have always had excellent coffee in the dining room or the casino.

My husband and I have gone back and forth about this beverage package so many times. Like I said, we are big drinkers, but we usually don't drink the same things. He will enjoy a wine with me if I get a bottle but he would rather have beer or liquor. I do think that we would save a lot of money with this package if he and I would sit down with a bottle of wine every night at dinner. The discount is very good. Our last two cruises we were able to get some bottles at a discount price and that was well worth it so we took advantage of it. We let it go to the Cellar and would get it the next night at dinner again. And I agree, every once in a while it is hard to get someone's attention to get another drink. I know that something that would annoy me much more if I was on the all-inclusive beverage package.

This cruise we have two Scenic cruising days and to sea days so we might take more advantage of it. I think I could definitely be enticed by one of the Sip & Sail promotions. I'm going to keep an eye out because it don't think we're on a very good promotion right now. On our last Cruise a Sip & Sail came in not long after we booked and my husband was so pissed! LOL the deal we had gotten was financially better but if we had never known that one was available this would have been a great deal. And it's a deal we could have gotten excited about!

  5. Interesting to me how people are so quick to complain it's a "double post". JUST DON'T CLICK! !!! You ask whatever you need to OP!

I will say this, I have asked for decaf coffee in the main dining room on multiple occasions and most of the time I have to wait because I'm told they are Brewing it and it comes out scalding hot. Any coffee I have received in the main dining room has been delicious and extremely hot. Have to disagree that the coffee is not perked there. Maybe on some ships that may be true but it has not been my experience.

I would not risk sharing the card. And honestly it just isn't right. These are the kind of things that cause cost of drinks and cards to go up. My husband and I are big Drinkers and we don't even find the need for these cards. I think you would end up losing money.

  6. These repeated discussions are for the benefit of new cruisers. People who are just learning how to search Cruise Critic boards and want to glean information from more experienced cruisers regarding the norm.

What I don't understand, is if they want to complain that this topic has been covered Ad nauseam then why don't you just scroll past this post and don't get involved. Sometimes it is hard to search for a topic or sometimes you search for it and it's hard to sort between the Articles that the website has posted and the different forms that might not relate to your cruise line. People need to be less abrasive here. I think there's nothing wrong with social interaction to answer these questions.

  7. Last month when we had dinner in the Crown Grill the waiter stopped us from adding the tip to the bill (we had forgotten to bring cash) saying the cover charge includes his tip. I then specifically asked him if I ran back to the cabin and brought back some cash, would he get all of that tip. He responded, "There's no need to do that, why pay something that's already been paid."

We're not newbies so we were shocked by his comments.

We have been told not to tip as well. Everyone has always been very gracious when accepting tips from us. Some have even tried to stop us from cash tipping explaining the same as happened to you. We do tip everyone the same. I notice the comparison earlier, we will tip everyone that served us since the Brigade system they use usually only has two or three of the same people every time.

The topic of tipping comes up over and over and over and over. It's as bad as the "Great Formal Attire Debate" that is also endlessly repeated here on Cruise Critic. Nobody is going to convince anybody else to see things from their point of view. It's hopeless. It's akin to telling a Muslim that they should be a Cristian or telling a Catholic that they really "should" be a Protestant or a Mormon or a Seventh Day Adventist or a Jehovah's Witness. It's like expecting to "have a talk" with folks and suddenly achieve peace in the Middle East. Not... Going... To... Happen.

Some tip and will always tip. Some tip extravagantly and will always do so. Some don't tip and never will. I'm as guilty as the next person for even participating in this thread. I think it's time for all of us to stop. I'll go first...

  8. I was pescatarian on my last cruise and that was hard but not as hard as dairy free will be. I always make it work so I'm sure a cruise will be no different. I've always heard the kitchen will pretty much make anything you want, especially if you have dietary restrictions I'm sure they're even more accepting. If you start off in the main dining room on your first day and talk to the maitre d and as long as you're in the same dining room every night I bet will take care of you by request and put something together for you.

Also indian night will be very easy! That's one of my favorites already but now it really will lol.

  9. You don't eat meat...so don't eat meat! If you do the "special needs" thing in advance, they can direct you to foods that have no meat products in them.

Did you know that the op can't have croutons?. Did you know pretty much every salad dressing except oil and vinegar have dairy in it? Good luck with the salads. Definitely can't have Caesar.... eggs, fish, cheese. Did you know they also can't have any cakes, cookies, pudding, any any dessert of any kind on the ship besides just fruit?. Better make sure that fruit doesn't have whipped cream on it. Also no gelato. And no protein bars. And some of the granola has dairy in it too. Did you know that everything but the purest of dark chocolate has milk in it? Even some dark chocolate itself.

Being vegan isn't just not eating meat. My doctor has me on a dairy free diet right now and you wouldn't believe where hidden dairy lies.

  10. The suite link posted works fine.

It didn't work for me. That's all I was saying. I just wanted to make sure that the original poster had the information they needed. Just giving someone a link and walking away doesn't always help a person here. People come here for the social interaction to get information and I just wanted to make sure they got what they needed. Of course they know they can go to the website.

  11. I agree that the Golden is a favorite. Have done many long and short cruises (in suites) on her when she was ported out of San Pedro.

    * I guess it would depend on which port she leaves from. Out of San Pedro, only those traveling with you IN the suite are given Priority boarding on embarkation day and tendering.

We had a whole family of 6 in priority every time. And we were told multiple times that anyone traveling with us will get the same perks when it came to lines like this. as they understand a family would want to stay together. And before anyone attacks me by saying "wellof course I had small children", no... everybody was over 21.

  12. Op did you get your answer? I tried to click on that link and it did not work for me so I was wondering. Our very first cruise was on a penthouse suite on the Golden Princess! We believe that has been the best Suite we have gotten and our favorite ship so far. Enjoy yourself! Our favorite perks are breakfast and the free laundry. We never send anything out to be washed but we do send all of my husband's shirts and my dresses out to be pressed on the very first day. I'm weird about my clothes getting worn out which is the only reason I don't see them out for laundry. And of course the mini bar setup! How could I forget the mini bar setup! Anything you do not like you can trade out. After you get settled, just call room service and tell them you want to trade all of the sodas for sprite for all of the liquor for just vodka (as an example). We kind of screwed ourselves by starting off in a penthouse suite so we have never sales had any other type of room, but even though technically it doesn't count as a perk, I would have to say the Giant and beautifully appointed bathroom should count as a huge perk! And again I don't know if this counts but the walk-in closet sure is great.

There are a lot of other minor perks that I felt like we didn't really use or didn't make much of a difference to us. Some of them at first seem really important but as the cruise goes on you don't worry about it. If you have tender embarkation I believe you get a priority line. The one time we had a tender, it was so mixed together we just got in with everyone else and we were on so fast I don't see what the point of letting us on first would have done. I do like that there is a suite priority line when you're first embarking on the ship. You save a lot of time in that line and anyone else that might be traveling with you in another type of State Room gets to go with you through that line. I believe in a suite you get priority reservations and you should also still be receiving a free night in one of the specialty dining areas. With Club class starting I'm not sure if any of that has changed. There is a thread on here called favorite Suite perk.

  13. What a mean lot of posters here. OP clearly provided pertinent information:

50 yr old Husband has a knee injury from desert storm [sic]

Poster grew up in Europe but has never been to "British Isles"

DH has never been but wants to go to Scotland, but OP is tired of Italy

OP welcomes opinions, especially from those who can compare multiples [sic]

OP will sail Princess (all in a suite)

OP apparently bought some oceanfront property in Alaska in Sept: "..after our large purchase of land and sea Alaska this Sept."

Not sure why the experts on this board couldn't give better advice.

Wow Thank you so much! I have almost deleted this thread several times. I can't handle the negativity on here sometimes. It will keep me off of here for months. I have it posted it in two places and so many of the responses, clearly did not read my post. People kept responding about Transatlantic giving me a very limited time frame so basically it was a stupid question. TO ME the post says I chose against that so I am trying to figure out when to go . If it was TA I would have very few options and asking around would not be necessary.

I guess I should be more clear. The reason I was asking was I was wondering if someone could tell me a more affordable estimate of a time to go to the few ports that Princess cruises from instead of me putting every single port in for every single week during the season. And I think it is not unreasonable to think that there could be a large following of folks that say one particular itinerary is NO GOOD! I have DEFINITELY heard that about the land portion of Alaska after I booked.

And we ARE within driving distance of ATL and we are thinking that is best. There is not a non stop option from Nashville for anything.

  14. You usually have the same two or three servers all night. My husband shakes each of their hands and tips in cash as we leave. We never add a tip to the slip except occasionally at the bar if we forgot cash.

Most of the time the maitre d is our sabatini's breakfast maitre d so we usually tip him at the end of our cruise in the morning but occasionally we will tip him on specialty night as well if he's outstanding. Which he usually is LOL

we have been very lucky for most of the mornings that we have specialty dining at night, our maitre d will mention that he will see us later since he has already looked at the reservation book. I think that is extremely wonderful and shows that he cares about his job and the guest. He deserves an extra tip in my opinion.

  15. I was living in the Stuttgart area with my parents when I met my future husband. He was in the Army stationed at Dachau outside of Munich. After we married to spent two more tours in Germany in the Hanau area which is near Frankfurt. Loved every minute!

My parents moved from Schwabach right before I was born then were stationed again when I was 9. I grew up in Mannheim, near Heidelberg, from 5th grade till college and then came back home a few times after graduation. I used to date a guy from Hanau ;) I feel the food is very authentic. Much better then most stateside German restaurants . Except in Helen, Georgia...the food is great there.

  16. We are sailing on Coral Princess in March. My husband and I lived in Germany for 8 years and love the food. Does Coral Princess have the Café Caribe? Would love to enjoy some good German food.

You will be able to enjoy a german night in the buffet on the Coral unless for some reason they changed something. We were in the coral this week last year and the Bavarian night was excellent! Where did you live?

  17. Great question! I am dairy-free now and have two partial coffee cards that I will be using that I will be using this fall. I didn't read page two's responses but in the casino if I ordered a coffee they would check my card and give it to me free. Otherwise they would have charged me for it. The casino is supposedly one of the places where they brew the coffee and it isn't the concentrate.

  18. On some of our cruises it has been in the patter, and some of it and has not. Sometimes we see it posted somewhere on the ship sometimes we do not. I'm pretty certain they have a set schedule on what they're making for every single cruise so you could just ask your first day on the ship which day it is if it does not appear to be showing up in your patter. I love Bavarian night! The food is very authentic and delicious. They quite often have Specialties that aren't common in German restaurants in America. It appears that most executive chefs on the ship are Germans so they do a great job at it. The Indian night is really good too, especially if you're a vegetarian in the group.

  19. When I saw the map of us going in circles i was floored !!!

We were one that had a really bad experience because of the flooding in our room. That wouldn't have even really been an issue if they've come to take care of it on day one. But we had to ask, I believe it was eight times to get it fixed. And our hallway reeked of mildew and was completely flooded. Water would squish up around your shoes when you stepped on it. And then we were dragging that mold into our room. My husband has asthma and that was not good for him at all. A lot of people gave us a lot of flack on those live postings saying you should have made the best of it, like we did. They didn't have a flooded hallway.

  20. Flown to Europe a lot? You can help!

So here is the deal. DH and I decided to go to Europe in 2019 before he gets too old to enjoy it (only 50 but has knee issues from desert storm).

We always get a suite (princess only), and for him that is NOT negotiable. He also hates to fly and has issues with it because of his knee. SO he wanted to do one way to Europe then do a transatlantic home. Well trying to do some research this week after our large purchase of land and sea Alaska this Sept, and possibly a cruise with friends in spring of 2018 (all in a suite mind you) I don't feel comfortable with the cost. So now I am thinking we need to just roundtrip flight a 7 or 10 day cruise. He seems (sorta) ok with it. Here is the question:

Cheapest time of year to take a flight to Europe?

    Opinions on best European cruise?

    Cheapest European airport destinations?

I grew up in Europe but never went to the British Isles, DH has never been but would really like to go to Scotland. I think he would enjoy Italy but I have been there so much I'm not enthused about it. I welcome opinions, especially from those who can compare multiple.

I have looked at 2 different weeks in April to London and they were several hundred different so I thought I would just see if some experienced Europe travelers could give me a rough estimate. I haven't been in ages and don't remember the high periods.

    Thanks!!!!
