  1. You can get similar ones from Vionic with great support. They will probably cost three times as much but are worth the money.

Thanks! I'll have to check. I have 2 pair of Vionic flip flops and love them. Just returned from 7 days on Liberty of the Seas and they were great.

  2. We're cruising out of Galvaston leaving Sunday with kids and grands -- 2 plus 2 families of 4.

We live about 6 hours from Galvaston so are able to drive. Kids and grands are all from Indianapolis area. When planning travel for them we found transportation from Hobby to Galvaston was crazy. The cruise shuttle would have been over $300 per family plus airfare (about $1400 per family on SW - the cheapest option.). Car rental to accommodate them and all their luggage would've been at least $300 for the week. Not counting terminal parking which we're picking up. Long story not made any shorter... they ended up deciding to drive down and see the sites on the way. Even figuring gas, snacks and hotel they are spending considerably less. And yes, we're still picking up terminal parking -- 2 blocks away and about $50 per vehicle.

  3. RedHeadTexan-- Very cute skir! And love the other fabrics. I ran into JoAnn's to get some thread for my serger. Hemmed a dress I purchased for cruise leaving Sunday. Normally I hate any sort of repairs/alterations, but felt so good to do even that little bit of sewing. Maybe this summer's project will be to get set up for sewing again...

  4. You might try looking for a hotel in Texas City with port shuttle service. That's where we're staying. Galvaston hotels are crazy... and we're cruising Memorial Day weekend which is doubly nuts! You could rent a car to get to Texas City.

Some people have also said they used Uber to get from Hobby to Galvaston and then took a cab back to the airport...

TxNewlyweds, welcome! I don't believe we have seen you posting here before? Based on what I saw above, you are about to leave on a cruise, so I don't think we'll hear from you until you get back.

Tell us about yourself...as you can see from our conversations, many, but not all of us, are earth or autumn.

Thanks Laurie! We leave Sunday on the cruise, Thursday for Galvaston so I should be getting stuff ready to pack. Still need to hem a dress.

Our 1st cruise was our honeymoon November 2015. This one is with the kids and 4 granddaughters. Something tells me it will be a different kind of trip... lol

I have no idea what I am! I'm pretty sure it's not earth or autumn. Maybe you can point me in the right direction. Caramel/golden blonde, light blue eyes, predominately Eastern European heritage... will try to post pictures when I get back.. In the meantime here's one from a couple years ago. ;) I'm trying to get more comfortable having pictures taken.

  6. I bought a pair of fringed knee high boots this year, despite my age, because I love them and they look great and make me feel great. ..... Be comfortable! If you're fine with it, don't let others make you self conscious!

I think you hit the nail on the head...

If you love something and feel great wearing it, go for it!

If it makes you uncomfortable or self-conscious, put it back...

  7. For that 2-piece, there are some out there that have a lower "bralette" than the usual top but shorter than a tankini top. Look at Athleta and Title Nine for some examples. If you are looking for a higher-waist bottom, those two also have some of the "retro" bottoms where they really go up to the waist.

Also, if you're just wearing the suit to be sitting out, look at the workout bralettes that most athletic wear places offer (Athleta, Title Nine, Fabletics, Lululemon, Lucy). They can have a little more structure to them and, honestly, can't tell the difference between them and a bathing suit top. Some have removable "modesty cups" built into the bust that you can take out. If you have your own forms, you could probably put this into the pockets built into those bralettes.

Thanks Slidergirl. I actually found a couple of great suits... 1 is a Soma suit and the other is from Blue Rod Beattie.

I think the secret to "dressing your age" in a 2 piece swimsuit for me is a top with underwire, preferrably cup sized, and a bottom that hits about 1.5 - 2 inches below my belly button. It's high enough to cover my scar, but still works with my body (short from the waist down.). I love the look of the high waisted retro styles on others, but they just don't work for me. They end up coming up to the bottom of the bra top... lol

  8. I'm 56, 5'5" and wear any where from an 8 to 12 depending on brand, cut etc. Most people say I look younger than my chronological age. Like most of us, I have my share of body issues. 3 years ago I had a unilateral mastectomy and reconstruction so I have a lovely scar across my abdomen. I also inherited my mom's "sturdy" Eastern European upper arms.

All that being said, I still feel more comfortable and like I look better in a 2 piece swimsuit. I just have to find one now that covers my scar and has good support.

I've also finally reached an uneasy truece with my upper arms. I finally understand the rest of the world isn't as fixated on them as I am.

For our upcoming cruise I have an ombré blue to silver sequin tank dress (because DH really likes me in blue) and a strapless open back long floral dress. http://www.edressme.com/water-color-strapless-pleated-floral-print-maxi-dress-by-nicole-miller-new-york.html

I feel great in both dresses! Yes, I notice my upper arms and that weird under arm fat, but I really doubt anyone else does. Look at the overall impression you give rather than nitpicking the details.

Oh and for those of you who mentioned bra straps showing... I think a great strapless bra can be our best friend. I'm trying to decide if I need to buy a second before we leave, since I expect I will wear it frequently. I'm a 36D and found a great comfortable one at Soma recently. Otherwise I prefer Wacoal and Natori bras. They fit me well and give me the sense of confidence I was missing after the mastectomy.

  9. flow-color-chart.jpg

I need to give thought to whether or not all these are accurate, but based on the discussion over at the fire thread, I got to thinking about you, Melody. I'm a warm autumn, or true autumn. I can wear soft or deep autumn, but hose warm autumn colors are the best for me.

Somehow I've got to be 56 and still have no idea where I fall here. How do I find out?

  10. Sunnydaygirl,

I hope your hubby continues to recover and improve. I completely relate about exercising and gyms... Maybe find a friend/buddy to go for a walk with. Someone that you can enjoy a daily visit with and just happen to get some exercise.

We've also found small changes really can help. Since you know you're a stress eater have healthier options around and go with the 80/20 rule. Don't beat yourself up for 20% comfort choices. It won't be fast loss, but it seems to be working for DH and me. Slow and sustainable. October is a long way off.

  11. Thanks so much for all the positive suggestions and comments. I feel confident now and will look into the options suggested here!

One thing, you might find the avionics take a little getting used to. Maybe not if you are used to orthotics, but they will feel different and take a little getting used to. The insert that comes with the shies says go wear them for a sort period of time and then increase time until you are used to them.

  12. Hmm , finding time to sew is the challenge. I must be procrastinating as I am cleaning!

These are the patterns I have in my stash that I am thinking of b8e79f4fac103408afe96de578548179.jpg

f5c1cfbf674e9de47e65c134b7f43dd8.jpg this is from the Craftsy class I have signed up for.

And lastly this one from the Burda Magazine 656ad4cba44996de1baeebd255bcf60a.jpg

Dose anyone have experience or tips for figuring which line to trace with the Burda patterns?

Will post pictures later of what fabrics I have in my "resource centre " for sewing

I like the patterns. Do you mean deciding which size to use or making sure you are tracing the correct line? If it's making sure you are tracing the correct line, I used to go over it with a bright color highlighter to be sure I had the right one when it came to the material.

Saw lots of very pretty dressy clothes material today, but absolutely nothing for a casual flowy jumpsuit... Well I take that back.. there was one very pretty piece, but it was $13 a yard and I need 5 yards. So that's just way too much when I factor in my time. At least right now... Does anyone ever order fabric online?

  13. I use Estée Lauder Day Wear. It's a tinted moisturizer that has two different sunscreen formulas. SPF 50 & SPF 15. It had been discontinued, but Estee received so many requests that they reformulated it (to bring in the SPF 50). Great product, fits in a 3-1-1 bag, a little dab will do you. Available at Sephora, Dillard's & Macys ( that I know of), costs about $35

Is this the one you use?

I too am looking for something that has good spf and is very natural looking.

  14. So happy to know others still see clothing! I just got my 3 machines back up and running after a several years hiatus and am anxious to get back to sewing.

The challenge I'm having is finding nice garment fabric. Plenty of quilter fabrics but not what I'm looking for.

We leave 2 weeks from today n our next cruise and I have a pattern for a harem jumpsuit I really want to take with me but so far no fabric. I love jumpsuits and rompers but I'm long waisted so it's hard to find the right fit. Also have very "strong" upper arms so anything with woven sleeves is a challenge to buy.

Now to find a fabric source!

  15. I too LOVE SHOES ! I'm afraid to count how many I have! These are the shoes I wore at my grandson's wedding. I was the Sr. Bridesmaid & wore a long bright pink gown with these shoes. I actually had the heel cut down about 1/2" so I could walk in them! :D

I just found this thread and hubby says I've found my happy place. 😍

LOVE these! They are the same fabric as the heels I wore for our wedding a couple years ago! I was determined to wear bright, happy flowered heels! I'll post a pic as soon as I figure out how.

On our honeymoon cruise we also had a "shoe bag." Good thing we were driving to port! I ke trying to narrow down my shoe lust for our next cruise in 2 weeks, but it's so hard!

Can I join too? I'm Carol btw... Now to finish reading the posts!

  16. Cute dress.

    Averaging out would be awesome.

Now I just have to decide it I want the extra height below the waist to make my breasts higher above my waist

    or

I could put it above the breasts and be able to wear bigger necklaces without them hiding in cleavage.

    Tough decisions!

I'd go with below my waist.... it would be great not tuck my pants waist into my bra band :D

  17. Great pictures! Which ship were you on?

I did end up finding two dresses today. Oddly enough both the same designer.

    http://www.dillards.com/p/nicole-miller-new-york-strapless-floral-gown/506782917?di=04913344_zi_multi&categoryId=-10005&facetCache=pageSize%3D48%26beginIndex%3D0%26orderBy%3D1%26facet%3D-10027810599111108101327710510810810111432781011193289111114107

I figure this one is perfect for that 2nd formal night after a few days of cruise food and drinks ;-)

The other is a sequin midi length tank dress - blue to silver ombré.

Of corse that means my gold scrappy sandals won't work, so had to find a pair of silver ones....

And need to find a necklace for the strapless one.

Will try to add real pics soon.
