  1. You made the right choice! You will never look back after the YC. My family has taken many RCCL cruises. Most recently on the Anthem--you can't compare even being in a grand suite on Anthem to the YC on MSC. I would compare it to the Sky/Star class system they have going at RCCL. I haven't been in the sky/star so I can't say for sure but am purely commenting from what I have read on this forum.

    Have fun!!!

  2. Wow...what a day dream I just had reading your question (I have 4 kids so no I would not get bored).

I would love to do this: Sleep until I wake up, hot tea, healthy breakfast, intense spin class, shower, get some sun, lunch with wine, massage, nap, yoga, dinner, ice cream in bed...out! Rise and repeat.

Hope you go and enjoy yourself. I might just start saving my money now : )

  3. Only you know YOUR 12 year old. Mom of 4 (16,15,12,9). For my kids NCL would have been a NO, Thank you with that age grouping. However, I also see some of their peers still skipping around the bus stop. So only you can really know for sure : ) The other thing is ..Do you trust her to make good decisions and follow your guidelines? If yes, at sometime you are going to have to let your little butterfly spread her wings. In any case, enjoy your cruise which ever you choose!

  4. At 7am maybe the omelet station is not open? My experience on the anthem was that I could get an omelet made to order (using non stick spray instead of butter) all egg whites and what ever veggies I wanted. Not sure they had that at 7am though. I used to grab a bran muffin (from park cafe at 6am) and have with almond butter (that I brought) digest and then workout and have a meal like you suggest around 10am. Hope you get this sorted out.

  5. I can share my experience with you. My son also has a peanut allergy as well he can't eat anything processed in a facility that also uses peanuts. We cruised on RCCL Anthem 2 years ago. I contacted special needs and had it noted on my reservation but when we got there the staff knew nothing. That was actually ok because I was going to tell everyone anyway.

Windjammer: We avoided desserts except for the soft serve by the pool. No issues with food. We did not do any chocolate chip muffins. We stuck to yogurts, cereals, fruits, waffles, pancakes etc. There is a ton to eat in the windjammer that will be fine.

Park Cafe: They had Udi gluten free cookies behind the counter that were individually wrapped and those were fine--had ingredients etc.

    Sorrento's: pizza galore!!!

MDR: We made sure to have traditional dining so we had the same wait staff every night. He ate ice cream for dessert. They did not serve any ice cream with peanut butter so we did not have to worry about cross-contamination

Kids Club: They noted the allergy and we left an epipen with them. I believe they did have the option to bring the kids to meals but we always would get him at meal time.

My son was 7 at the time and we became aware of his allergy since he was 18mths old so he is very aware of what he can and can't eat. He can check labels to see if they are processed etc. He knows he can't eat certain pretzels, some gummy bears, candy corn...etc.

My other tips is to bring his favorite desserts with you! Cookies, candy etc. We went on a cruise that was over Easter so we brought him a special small Easter basket.

Enjoy the cruise. You all will have a great time!

  6. So, if there was an actual emergency during a sea day in the middle of the Caribbean, where the sun and heat are comparable, you would expect to be "treated better", while the emergency is handled, maybe for several hours? I realize that most people who go on cruises have never had to train for actual life threatening emergencies, but that is what a muster drill is, and to be effective, training needs to be as close to the real thing as possible. The muster drill is not something the cruise lines do to annoy passengers, it is something that is done to help you learn to save your life. In an emergency, you cease to be a passenger, and become a liability that the crew is charged with keeping safe. At that point, your personal comfort moves way down the priority list, well below staying alive.

And if this is going to keep you from sailing on Navigator again, I guess you'll have to cross off the other 4 ships of the Voyager class, since their muster drills and locations will be the same.

Very true. My 2 AM emergency muster included drunk people, people in their underwear, babies without formula, and elderly people passing out, children asking if they were going to have to jump, and lifeboats lowered, helicopter circling, smoke billowing into the night sky, crew screaming at passengers, people begging to use the bathroom (which btw were non functional and filled with you know what), crew running past you in muster with hoses, vomiting, another cruise ship in the distance called to help receive passengers, people learning that if their families were at separate muster station that REALLY meant you were not together, no water for a couple hours..for 3 hours. I could go on but yes you were no longer a passenger at that point.

I'm not really sure that the muster helped at all. The crew was very very good about helping people get to their muster station by being posted everywhere but people were running with lifejackets and bumping into each other. Like a door buster at Walmart is all I can think of. Some of the cabins and hallways had smoking in them so I would imagine those people were extra terrified.

I feel lthe muster is more for the crew. They absolutely know what they're doing and they do it very well because they've done it many many many times.

I still don't love standing out in the blazing heat or freezing cold in master waiting for people that don't think they need to show up or that they can show up late. But I certainly know appreciate it.

  7. I LOVED it. I could have easily just eaten the buffet. I love hummus, roasted veggies, shrimp etc so it was right up my alley. The mains are basically just the meat on the plate or what you ordered without sides (which you don't need). They had a very nice dessert buffet. It was better than the windjammer I felt and I like dessert more than dinner : ) Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. My kids liked it also (ages 14, 12, 11 and 5). I am pretty sure I was able to get a kids meal for the 5 year old. We brought our own wine and were not charged a corkage. That was a year and a half ago so take my review with a grain of salt.

  8. I do the ordinary hand washing (after bathroom and before eating). I don't touch handrails, elevator buttons, or the salt and pepper shakers. I'm not a big fan of the buffet tongs but what are you going to do. There are so many things that you can potentially pick bugs up from...like menus etc.

Basically I assume all of those nasty germs are on my hands and proceed accordingly. I do not touch my eyes, nose, or mouth. If I am going to eat something without utensils I use hand sanitizer. Then I hope for the best.

    I have 4 kids and believe me..everyday is a new adventure : )

  9. Just wanted to chime on regarding the beverage package. I am a huge wine lover myself and was not impressed with the wines available for free with the package. You might want to take a look at what is available (for free) with the package. They do let you pay the difference though. So if you wanted the $16 glass of wine but the package only went up to $12 you would pay the $4 on top of that. Math is not my thing so I would guess it still makes sense to get the package? Just be aware that if you pick certain wines that you might still have an additional amount. Have a great cruise!

  10. canceled 11/11 cruise is 10days long.

2 days to get to miami from barbados. 5 days dry dock. 1 day from miami to ny.

    so 2 days to spare.

they're in barbados on 11/11 to let passengers off to fly them back to ny via charter planes.

but i highly doubt they'll be able to fly all 2000+ passengers in 1 day. thats 7 planes.

who the heck has 7 excess planes along with 7 pilots/crew on standby waiting to go in a few days notice? (that isnt military, that is.)

does that mean the gem will be the hotel for those that cant get a seat on a plane on 11/11?

so maybe leave for miami on 11/12. thats 1 spare day used up...

Not sure how many passengers exactly but they got 2,000 of us out of freeport in one day after the RCCL Grand fire. It was a LONG day.

  11. Please let us know how they get you home. My Dad hated to fly. For the last 40+ years of his life he flew 3 times. No way he would have gotten on a plane without being properly medicated beforehand.

Always makes me laugh when people worry about a corporations well being.

Try to have a good time. There are some fun bars along the water a short cab ride from Port Canaveral.

As an example, I was on the RCCL Grandeur cruise that caught on fire. We went to Freeport and for those people that refused to fly they "ferried' them to Miami and then put them on Amtrak.
