Thanks, the cruise I am taking is in mid Nov 20. Docking directly in Puerto Plata will be good.

In Puerto Plata are RCI ships docked at Amber Cove or tendered?

The beach area wasn't crowded had a guitar player and singer taking requests

Went to malecon 21 a few weeks ago. Didn't go to the beach so don't know about the min purchase requirement. My wife and I stayed at the main bldg. Laid back many and comfy seating areas reasonable menu. Had 4 beers and the total was $14 including tip. There was a group of euro college kids there that were studying, looked at their laptops, they will be there for another month or so. One was an architectural student and was working on a bldg design.
Great place away from the busy area in central Malecon.

Malecon 21 on s side of malecon is nice

The building status is the ground floor where the bar and lounge are new and complete. The structure for upper floors is complete, mgr said they will start on rooms in about 6 mos.
It is s of 40 Canones and n of the commercial pier. The sand seemed ok to me. Google map it to be sure, I remember NoHoch and Sulamar but not sure of their exact locations.
Exited our cab at 40 Canones, walked s to the pier and back to Malecon 21. Then walked to the Light House with a few drink stops along the way. Had no issues with peddlers, hustlers.
Costa maya port was a zoo.

Was in Mahahual on 11-20, no seaweed, all beaches clear. Further from the time we left lauderdale and returned no seaweed anywhere.
There were 3 ships in port but the Malecon was sparsely populated. Had some drinks at the Malecon 21, great spot friendly staff and also had a beachside spot with entertainment.

For other people reading this thread. Just to be clear there is no charge to use the loungers. The only thing you pay for is whatever food and drink you consume.
Can you reserve loungers without paying the AI charge?

I would be wary of purchasing something important in Grand Cayman. We weren’t allowed to hand-carry back on the tender and were told it had to be delivered directly to the ship from the port. We “lost” a bottle of single malt scotch.in 2016 I bought some rum at a shop close to the dock. It was labeled properly but when I went to pick it up it was not in my section.
Turns out the ship's crew put it in the wrong place. The crew was no help, I had to search through all the sections and later found it. That was Princess but have had difficulties retrieving liquor on RCI as well.

With all the discussion about the difficulty in finding an exit from the port, can anyone put together a free hand map to share?
-
are there return taxis on the back street frequently or could there be a long wait?
-
Has anyone been to Mahahual while 2 ships are in port?
What is the taxi wait and street scene like?
-
Are taxis easy to get for the return trip to the port?

At the risk of being told "tastes like chicken".... what does turtle taste like?
I have eaten sea turtle a lot growing up as it was legal then. Popular item in Miami and the keys.
Depending on the cut and preparation it can taste like veal or a good cut of steak. Last time I ate it was in 85 on a trip to Grand Cayman.
-
I think that is the best reply ever.
Growing up in Miami and the Keys from the mid 40's I agree.

Took the Jolly Roger on a Carnival cruise in 2015. It was a really good excursion. Ample water time, good lunch, lots of drinks and a really interesting boat trip along the shore of French Harbor. Lasted longer than advertised and was a great value for the $. The crew was outstanding in pointing out interesting things. If you are a snorkeler take your own gear. The fins they provide are small and really limber making you work in the current.
