  1. :D

cb - thank you for such an insightful post, much appreciated by me...Negativity everywhere

    bon voyage

I've always thought that some people are never satisfied.. they look for the 1/2 empty glass and of course.. they usually find it. It may not be your 'cup of tea' but the cruise ships are trying. I've heard they've taken notice of the 'nickel and dime' pushback and may just include more things and raise the price. That's the way it was back in the 80s.

As an aside... I really am somewhat miffed by expressions of dismissal from those who aren't into Wi-Fi/internet access. Condemnation of those folks who like to stay connected, read blogs, do last minute bookings on shore excursions, reservations at restaurants at the next port of call, etc. is just unfair. We don't condemn those who don't drink, want to bake themselves crispy, want to dress in a tuxedo EVERYNIGHT like the Love Boat.. Just enjoy yourself and let it go. My personal perfect cocktail hour is chatting with my husband on a balcony with a nice glass of pinot and my ipad on my lap.:D:D

  2. Smile an make it a game. You're on vaca...

Like bargaining for things in 3rd world countries! As long as you do it with a smile... They just walk away. Example... Upgrade beverage package? Ok. For $3/day instead of $10 .. They'll just walk away because they don't have that authority. 2 for 1 specialty dining?.. Propose it All the time! 2 for 1 excusions, etc. they'll run away from you soon enough. Smiling helps get the anger down. Whether I am bargaining for a shirt or an upgrade... I do it all the time and make it fun! :D

  3. Good to know about them trying to expand on breakfast items instead of something only .. for the Americans, .. only for the Asians... only for the Europeans.. I tell you sometimes when they try and do a dish which they are not comfortable with preparing.. its just awful! I remember being in Figi and they had a locals lunch night and its was great but all Americans could do was complain about Jaffle burgers and Vegemite!

  4. Rice porridge is sometime made with water or stock and is served piping hot. The cantonese tend to add all sorts of savory flavors in them (zook) the northern Chinese tend to have it plain without flavors. The condiments are across the board, generally salty. There can be fried 'donuts' served as well as fried eggs or salty duck eggs and of course... Thousand year old eggs. Pickles, like the zillion varieties of pickled cabbage, radishes, cucumbers are brined and garlic flavored. Often there is marinated tofu squares as well. Only thing served sweet sometimes is Fresh Soy Milk but usually also savory with chili oil drizzled along with green onions as a topping. Almost every major chain in the east has these on the breakfast bar for the Asian business person and traveler. I'm sure it puzzles the Westerner initially but generally its prepared better than the western breakfast because the staff and kitchen knows how to prepare it better than waffles and pancakes! :D

  5. Hey.. very interested in this topic since I think I can do just as well booking a fun little boutique hotel in the best location. I haven't got a set $ amount yet but considering what they are offering, I don't think its such a great deal and its at the Grand Hotel Palace (yawn).

  6. Easy question!

Travelers have noted when they are in any of the far east large cities, even if staying in an American chain hotel, they will find un recognizable things on the breakfast bar. These include rice porriage, asian pickles, salted eggs, salted peanuts. 1.5 billion people in the world start the day this way. :D

I find breakfast is the one meal everyone goes for comfort and familiarity. e.g. The healthy person may see everything on a breakfast bar but still goes for the fresh fruit and granola, The European descent person may look for meats and cheeses and dense bread on their breakfast bar, Americans look for eggs and cereal, etc.

    Thanks (part asian cruiser)

  7. We're just off Connie and on all three of our 'Chic' nights, shorts were worn in the MDR by several passengers. Now it doesn't matter to me what pax wear as it doesn't affect the taste of my food, however, my DH did take umbrage to the fact that people couldn't be bothered to dress for dinner (and before anyone states they could have just put them clean on, some of these were the same shorts and T-shirts we'd seen them in for the past 48 hours, and they hadn't lost their luggage ). We also saw women walk into the buffet in bikinis with towels wrapped around their shoulders - no cover ups.

He did mention this to the CC Host, who said it's only a suggested code. My DH continued by stating he thought there was no point in printing a dress code if staff were unable to to say anything to the guests who didn't comply. As I mentioned above, I'm indifferent about the whole 'Chic' night debacle - he, on the other hand, was quite frustrated with the lack of regard/respect by other passengers to adhere to the guidelines - why book a line with a suggested dress code and then do the opposite.

So the question is: in their literature, should X bother to print the suggested dress code at all?

So this happened just the other day? Well I think the company has decided to be completely indifferent to it. If they are not even responding to a direct inquiry by a Pax; then its really up to the Pax to dress appropriately "in their own opinion". Where will it end? Dunno but the fact that the original poster here saw 4 pairs of shorts in the MD tells me the debate seems over. Dressing up for dinner is lovely but not everyone believes its something they want to do while on vacation or even for a single night. That's why I mentioned dinner at the Ruth Chris' the other night.. it is clearly stated in the policy but they allowed virtually everyone into the Saturday night dining room with one of the most exclusive views of the city. Its pervasive... everywhere and so why are we surprised its not being enforced on Celebrity.

I think the easiest thing for Celebrity and folks to push for is Chic/fine wear in the Pay-for- restaurants and be done with it.

  8. No more sandwiches at the Café on 5. pastries in the morning and changes to desserts for afternoon and evening. Also no cheese
    :(

We always take small disposable plastic containers with us on cruises. When we are up at the buffet we put some cheeses and dried meats in a container and grab some crackers in the other. We keep the cheeses/meat in the cabin fridge and the crackers on the shelf. I am also a diabetic and if a need some food I can always get some from our fridge 24/7. Besides the cheese and crackers go well with a cold beer on the balcony in the afternoon at sea

    :):):):)

Bean and Gold... YOU ARE both helpful and brilliant!

and to TEECEE... :p .. You don't know what HANGRY DIABETICS/Gluco sensitive folks are like when they can't find a snack... think 2 year olds wanting their snack...NOW! No waiting for room service, etc.

As it is, I currently walk around with all sorts of energy/snack bars/crackers/ cheese and cracker packs in my purse/pack but I was just thinking HOW MUCH do I really want to bring if its really that easy to get.

    thanks all

  9. I'm still not positive. I read that the sport shirt needs sleeves. I have sport shirts that have short sleeves and others that have long sleeves. I don't have any that have no sleeves.

I had dinner the other night at a Ruth Chris' Steak House in Washington DC and it supposedly has a strict PM dresscode.. ya well... there was everything from Tux/Wedding party dress up to what belonged on the beach or pool.

I think its time to accept what's happening everywhere in the world and if you really want formal.. there are cruise ship lines which really focus on that... aren't there? e,g. Crystal, QEII

The Filipino button shirt can be quite dressy as someone mentioned and it is intended to be W/O TIE..

Enjoy.. aren't you on vacation :-)

  10. Great ideas all! I especially like the idea of wandering past the buffet or wherever, picking up a beverage (I have the drink package) picking up a protein (like cheese or cottage cheese) and a piece of fruit and going back to the room to meet the DH and friends. They'll be chilling somewhere since I am the active one in the group. Thanks all!

  11. I now have a name for what happens to me. I also get HANGRY! Thanks!;)

I see this is your first post, welcome to CC.

As far as your question about eating throughout the day, you've gotten a great answer above.

To add to that, if you see something you like on the buffet (yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese...) you can bring some back to your cabin and keep it in the refrigerator. I also think there is a cheese plate from room service or just about anything you'd like.

In any event, no, you will not become HANGRY!:)

THANK YOU! It seems the older I get the more unwilling I am to 'wait' for something to tide me over... ANYTHING.. cheese/fruit etc. is much better than the alternative chips but really HANGRY is not a good place to be after a busy day in the sun or city. I get looks from husband and friends sometimes with a statement of "well... it's only a hour or so until we eat dinner... NO that's just the problem.

  12. Hello.. new cruiser (actually did a fair amount back 20 years ago and I know that doesn't count :p)

Booked on Reflections, at will dining chosen and concerned about wanting a nibble or snack BEFORE dinner/after lunch etc. You see.. I'm a diabetic and just like to graze all day. If I wait until ... I could get HANGRY:mad:.. DH wouldn't care for that!

Any suggestions and thoughts greatly appreciated. I plan to buy all kinds of goodies (nuts, cheese) etc. while ashore but just wondered if I didn't have to be quite as prepared.

Thanks in advance for your wisdom
