  1. For Cabo, what about the beaches on the Pacific side?

From a few aereal shots I've seen, there are some hotels on those beaches. And they look like easy walking distance from the tender dock.

Those beaches are not swimmable. In fact, the waves on that side are quite dangerous and there are signs everywhere advising people not to walk on the beach. At least once a year, someone gets pulled out to sea by a rouge wave. This year, fortunately, they were saved. Never turn your back on the ocean should you wish to visit there. It is beautiful if you keep a safe distance.

  2. My favorite snorkel tour is on the Rissalena.

    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g152515-d1098515-Reviews-Rissalena_Cruises-Cabo_San_Lucas_Los_Cabos_Baja_California.html

You didn't mention a budget. This is a very comfortable catamaran. They take you snorkeling to Santa Maria which is less crowded. $55/person includes open bar and a full lunch. If that is not in your budget, there are many other options, such as Cabo Escape and the Pirate Ship if you have kids with you.

There is only one swimable beach in Cabo, Medano Beach, which is lined with bars and restaurants. You can reach it by water taxi or land taxi, or if you are in for some exercise, you can walk from the tender pier, which would be about a 45 minute walk.

The town is right there at the tender pier. You can walk the marina or go one street back and see Cabo Wabo and other sites. If you are more specific on what you want to do, I can offer more advise.

  3. Thanks from me too. :)

We love. love Cabo and are booked on the Ruby in March.

Our traveling companions have already cancelled this cruise, but we still want to go.

    Patti

Patti do your traveling companions live in San Diego like you do and I do in the summer? If so, have them count the number of shooting reported in the Union Tribune today and everyday. It's more than Cabo for sure.

  4. There was a very long article in the newspaper Metropolis which when translated is a bit rough, and some of it was a bit too graphic, so I am only posting the part about the Palmilla incident. It was indeed a targeted crime, and if you read the last paragraph, it is very telling:

    Sunday, August 6.

1.- Yosio Eduardo Montoya Vizcarra , as well as two more male people killed on the beach of Palmilla in San José del Cabo.

    The Palmilla Case

On the specific case of the Palmilla beach, according to the first investigations of the investigative agents of the PGJE, the assassins went by Yosio Eduardo Montoya Vizcarra, whose name appeared in a "list of candidates" for sale of drug that was integrating narcomenudista Edwin Alberto López Rojas, when he was murdered the night of last August 5.

The young man, according to the first investigations, was forming a network that he called "Los Chiquinarcos", which was mostly composed of young high school students, whose ages range from 15, 16, 17 and 18 years .

To all - according to the messages found on his cell phones - "he had invited to work in the drug sale", since July 27, just when he learned of the delivery of Dámaso López Serrano "El Mini Lic" in Calexico, California , And whose place - according to said - would remain in the hands of the group so that he worked until the day of its death.

In fact, according to the Facebook account , Edwin Alberto López Rojas appears as a friend of Yosio Eduardo Montoya Vizcarra, and his brothers Moses and Jesus, the latter commented on the account of Edwin , when the following was killed: "Pa'allá let's go everyone. Rest in Peace Compa ".

According to the researchers, "the rival group was able to realize what was happening in the midst of the war between criminal cells, and undertook a hunt for young people associated with Edwin Alberto López Rojas as a strategy to disrupt that group".

Unfortunately, and in the attack of the beach Palmilla , two more people died and two they were with serious injuries.

The case generated great controversy because just when the attack occurred around 1:43 in the afternoon, the beach was to burst by mostly local bathers.

The bathers - according to witnesses - heard two bursts of long arms.

The people who were near the point of the attack, immediately ran to safeguard their physical integrity, and hid until the security forces arrived.

It is noteworthy that Metropolis , received a video of 25 seconds that supposedly was recorded at the time of the shooting of Palmilla beach, however, and after being thoroughly reviewed, an audio and video specialist, determined that the recording is a Assembly because the following reasons:

In the first place, the recording presents very few people on the beach, which of course does not correspond to the time of when the events happened.

Second, there is no alteration of the bathers, and those who remain in their normal activity, when the attack supposedly happens.

Third, and lastly, the tone of the sound of the shots does not correspond to the ambient sound of the video, so it is clear that it was edited.

In summary, according to the audio and video expert, consulted by this means, the video may have been recorded after the attack, edited with shooting sounds, and then uploaded to social networks in order to sow panic and chaos Social, seeking to damage the image of Lo Cabos.

So the cartels are seeking to damage the image of Los Cabos, why, we don't know. I can tell you that every time something happens, the Mexican government increases the Federal Police manpower. I will be there, by myself, for 11 days at the end of this month. My husband does not fear for my safety and neither do I. I can give you a more first hand experience. As with all things, the media tends to shine the light on the sensational part and forget the details.

  5. In Cabo, it's Medano Beach. You can walk, take a water taxi or a land taxi to get there. Lined with bars/restaurants. If you are the party type, Mango Deck is the place for you. If you want something more laid back, Billygans, Milky Way which also has a dive shop, The Sand Bar or Omega Sports Bar. Tabasco's used to be nice but they have been doing funny things with the final bill, so they are being avoided.

  6. I was curious about going out to Rock Point but wasn't sure on how much time it would take. Now I know . My hubby really wants to visit Cabo Wabo. I heard that place can be a bit of a zoo. Any thoughts?

During the day, Cabo Wabo is sedate, it's at night when things heat up. Go have a drink and a snack and visit the gift shop.

  7. Thanks everyone. I have been to the Mexican Riviera a few times but not since a few years ago when there seemed to be a lot of trouble and the cruise lines stopped going for a bit. I know about being safe, etc. and am like that where I live. I may actually only get off the ship in Cabo because I don't feel like there is much to do that I haven't done at the other stops. Thanks again.

Bet you haven't ridden a camel at the other stops. There is a camel experience excursion that gets rave reviews.

  8. I live in Cabo San Lucas six months a year. There has been new lately of incidents in Cabo, which previous to this year, was pretty much untouched by the cartels. Here is a very good article pertaining to Cabo telling what has gone on and what is being done:

    http://www.itravel-cabo.com/about-los-cabos/safety.aspx

Cabo had over 300,000 cruise ship passengers between January-May this year. Not one cruise line diverted the port, even on windy days when the marina was closed but the cruise ships were still tendering.

  9. CWcruisers,

We can only hope that things settle down there (relatively speaking), rather than escalate in any way.

I'm happy to keep you posted. I will be there again August 19-30 and then for the season November 20-May ?

I really don't think that things would escalate in Cabo to the point they have in other communities, between the strong ex-pat community and the Mexican government, I think things will remain manageable. No place is perfect.

BTW, I am not on your cruise, KroozNut is a friend that I met through cruising and lives in my same community in San Diego. He asked me to provide information on what I know. I am in touch daily with my friends that live there full time.

  10. I live in Cabo six months a year, just returned to San Diego two weeks ago, so if you really want to know what is happening, I am happy to answer questions.

First of all, the author of the article was doing what any journalist would do to get you to read it, sensationalism. None of us are "traumatized" by what is happening. Truth be told, it's been happening and I really do not want to add more fuel to the fire. I arrived December 13 this year and saw an escalation in Federal police presence. Federal, not Municipal, those are the guys you have to pay off to get out of your ticket. The Federal police are the good guys. The Mexican government does not want to loose control of Cabo and which each incident, more Federal police have been brought in. The cartels are making a statement and so is the government.

With the arrest of "El Chapo" Guzman, the cartels saw that as an opportunity to start turf wars. Cabo has always had a cartel, but it was silent as dealing drugs from Cabo is cumbersome, they have to be driven 1000 miles north and cross the border or a ferry to the mainland. Now, one cartel is greedy and wants more turf, even if it's not profitable for them. So as has been mentioned, this is a turf war, this has nothing to do with tourist or ex-pats, of which there is a large number in Cabo, both American & Canadian.

The location of the cooler was strategically placed to be found. It was very close to a dormitory (hotel) that is housing the Federal policeman. This is not the first cooler and in other cases, the bodies are not found with them which seems to indicate that the killings are not happening in Cabo. There have been many more problems in San Jose Del Cabo than in Cabo San Lucas.

I seriously doubt any of you will be diverted on your cruises. Cabo experienced over 300,000 cruise ship passengers between January and May 2017. Ironically, during Spring Break, typically March 1-April 15, nothing happened. Guess the cartels go on Spring Break also. You will see stepped up police presence, there are shade covers set up on various corners of the marina and Marina Blvd, the main drag in town, manned by a couple of Federal Police officers. They are a friendly bunch and will pose for pictures with you. Before I left, the police had gotten a new toy, a helicopter, and were flying that low around the marina, not sure if they were practicing or making a statement.

Enjoy my second home, it is beautiful, the Mexican people are wonderful, the food and drink is fantastic. Don't worry, be happy.:D

  11. I was on the Miracle Thanksgiving 2016 cruise and there were 4 ships in Cabo that day. CruiserBruce is right, you are a little premature in looking. Carnival sails that route year round which is probably why they have their schedule posted.

I have normally transitioned to my winter home in Cabo by Thanksgiving, last year being the exception. Never had weather issues, not to say it can't happen. November is normally great weather. Last year was a little warmer than normal.

  12. I have a question along the same lines. We have sailed many times in the Caribbean and like the warm water there. I am also a big baby that if I am going to be lounging on the beach and/or in the water I want it warm out and warmish water...if you had a choice between March and October which would be the best time for those conditions? Friends of ours just did one in March and when I was following them via bridge cams and port cams it was saying it was like 57 or 60 ish degrees in the am when the ship arrived....That is too cold for me I think...but curious as to those who frequent the area think?

I live in Cabo part time and have been here since December 13th. When I first arrived, it was still hot, then just like that, we had about six weeks of a "cold" spell, daytime temps in the low to mid 70's. Cabo is a desert and like any desert climate, in the winter, which would be March, it cools off at night, but most days warm up nicely. I walk my doggies around 7:30 am and only recall wearing a light sweater a couple of times in the morning. Weather in Mexico is changing just as it is anywhere else, but as I write, it is a beautiful, balmy 75 degrees with a gentle breeze. I have not worn long pants or close toed shoes since I've been here.

  13. Cold is relative. I'm speaking to you as a person who lives in San Diego, CA and Cabo San Lucas. We are probably talking mid-60's on sea days. Once you reach Mexico, should be mid-70's to low 80's.

I've hit some rocky seas on Caribbean itineraries also. Nothing is ever guaranteed.

  14. i know about the office..is monkey business better?

I think Monkey Business makes the best margaritas & pina colada's in Cabo IMHO. They are on Marina Blvd, down from Giggling Marlin, Dollar Rental Car is in the front, the bar is behind that.

  15. If you want to zip line, Puerta Vallarta is the best. I do not have a recommendation for a local operator.

I live in Cabo part time and when we do a snorkeling tour we use the Rissalena.

    https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g152515-d1098515-Reviews-Rissalena_Cruises-Cabo_San_Lucas_Los_Cabos_Baja_California.html

Small catamaran, very comfortable, maximum 24 passengers. They take you snorkeling to Santa Maria rather then Chilleno Bay which is much more crowded. $55.00/person includes open bar and a home cooked lunch.

  16. Common maximum amount I see often when withdrawing money at ATMs in Mexico is $3000 pesos per transaction ($150 USD) with a $103 peso ATM charge (about $5 USD). The ATM surcharge depends on the bank of course. I've had better surcharge rates from HSBC banks, but i looked at the map of Cabo and It looks like the closest HSBC bank is a few blocks away from the pier.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That HSBC is gone. There is none within walking distance from the tender pier. The closest is at the Wal Mart center.

  17. You can definitely bring it aboard the ship but do be careful though when shopping. There is a plethora of fake Cubans all over Baja. If you're serious about a real authentic Cuban cigar, watch some youtube videos on how people can tell if they're buying fakes and try visiting the cigar aficianado website. There's a forum there where cigar smokers will guide you on where to go. I read that in Cabo, a store called J&J has authentic Cuban cigars. I plan to pay them a visit when I get there.

J&J are authentic cigars, and very expensive also. But if you want some, that is the best place and they also have awesome mojitos.
