I have read some boards regarding the Internet on the newer ships that allows people with iPhones to use the iPhone messaging without purchasing the Voom internet packages. Has anyone been on the Grandeur that has also had this experience? We have booked a cruise in July and This is our first time sailing with RC. I did not check the cost of the Internet packages before booking. We only need to be able to message each other and I really don't want to have to pay $500 just for this service. TIA for any insight.

I haven't had them on Nassau but most Islands that sell the conch fritters also sell Conch Cracklings. It is sooo yummy! Give them a try!

They aren't as strict about the n/a drinks and the 5 minute wait. The coffee bars do make a mean Irish coffee (which is counted in your 15)

If you don't mind the price the lifeproof case gives a guarantee to be waterproof to a specified depth.

I was pricing some cruises on the BOGO 60% and the discount was listed on a separate line. Maybe further down on the invoice?

I also bring an extension cord as well but I use my phone for alarm and like to have it by the bed charging overnight

I'm trying to convince DH to take his first cruise with me and our DDs in January. He is an avid outdoorsman so I'm looking into a chartered fishing trip for our stop in Freeport. Anyone have any experience with the local charters? Any recommendations?

Barmoral is horrible! Please find something else to do. If you do the stingrays or dolphins they won't let you use your own camera trying to force you to buy their expensive packages. The beach is nice but the food and drinks are EXTREMELY overpriced (as in $25 for a hamburger and fries that is about the same as a McDonalds happy meal burger) The restroom and other facilities are FILTHY. The pool is not well maintained. I was so happy to see that ferry pull up so we could leave! Such a horrid waste of money and time. I haven't done any other excursions in Nassau but I can't imagine them being worse than Balmoral.

The social media package lets you use most social media apps but is not strong enough to face time or call using internet ( I've tried several times and only made a successful connection once) you can use SMS messages, FB messenger, or any other type of r chat app. This package usually costs $25 for entire cruise. We use this to communicate on board (we travel in a large group) and to communicate back home. If you purchase the higher packages you may be able to FaceTime but like Nic said there's no guarantee you will get a signal strong enough. The social media package usually is pretty consistent.

Yes you can still get and should get the insurance. Check out sites like insuremytrip.com. If you have health insurance that will be primary unless it is a governmental program like Medicare or Medicaid. These will NOT provide any coverage outside of the US. The travel insurance will provide secondary coverage but more importantly make sure it have adequate evacuation coverage. This is very expensive and if needed it will not be covered by your regular health insurance. Make sure to get AT LEAST a couple hundred thousand in evac coverage. I usually look for plans of $500k or more. You can find very reasonable premiums for your family. I purchased coverage for my family for about $70 for our next cruise. there are plans that will cover you for a year or per trip. Just depends on how much you travel. We do per trip as we only go cruising 1-2 times a year.

Here's a breakeven analysis someone did:

Some of the info in this link is out dated like the allowable cost is now $50 per drink and small water bottles are included in the package as well Powerade and specialty coffees

Thank you for this! I was considering buying some to pay for the cheers program in advance. I had no idea they couldn't be used before embarkation.

If he is walking with a cane it's probably too far. I've never stopped in Charleston on a cruise but I lived there for 4 years. Since it's a US port try Uber to the ferry terminal.

RC's pricing tactics are not cool. I haven't sailed with RC in a while and it may be a while longer after yesterday. I was pricing a cruise and it was advertised "second stateroom guest 60% off" so I selected a room advertised at $1100. When I looked at the total it was over $2200for both. Instead of charging $1100 and then 60% off that cost it was $1600 for the first and $660 for the second (which is 60% of 1100) so they give the 60% off the lower cabin advertised rate but charge you $500 more for the first person. Essentially paying $1100 for both and a savings of "0". And yes all these figures were before the takes and port fees They get away with this by having very small print "all prices are average per person"

Try the Waze app. It gives you realtime updates from other drivers on the road.

Thank you all for the information - even those that felt the need to negate the question with a caddy undertone. Perhaps, I didn't formulate my question properly enough.
I HAVE poured through the Carnival website and while they describe the use of a "sticker" for their prepaid soda program they did not specify how the purchase of the CHEERS program would be identified. (at least not that I could find) I could not tell if it was a sticker, a wristband or perhaps it might be coded into the keycard. I don't know if this sticker is going to be issued at check in - perhaps we need to collect it somewhere on board. Is it waterproof? We typically carry our keycards in a lanyard but is it okay if it accidentally gets wet?
We are first time cruisers with Carnival (migrating from DCL) and we are learning that Disney tends to do things their own way. (which we totally expected)
Apparently, the DisBoards are much more user friendly as well.
I always prepay it through the website before boarding. It is automatically associated with you sign and sail card so when it is swiped you will get a receipt that shows $0 and allows you to add extra gratuity if you want.
There are stickers that go on your card. I've had the sticker and not had the sticker. I've not seen a difference in service other than your bartender knowing ahead of the swipe which can be beneficial if you order something not covered the bartenders are good at letting you know before they pour it.

In terms of specialty coffee, my wife LOVES Starbucks frappicinos. Do they make those on the ship, specifically the inspiration, and if so are they included in the cheers? I've read the site but I don't know what exactly they are referring to or even what the available options are.
If there is an actual Starbucks on the ship then that is not covered. All of the coffees at the ship's own coffee stands are included. I'm not sure if they make a frap at the ship's coffee stands. They will do lattes, ice coffees, spiked coffees. Just not sure of the blended.

You get up to 15 alcoholic drinks per day. Most are covered. I don't think I have ever ordered a drink that wasn't covered.
Essentially if you drink 5 alcoholic drinks per day (or more) then it is worth the cost. I have only hit the 15 drinks once or twice but still found the package was well worth it. it's easy to have a few drinks at the pool, a few more at meals, a few in the evening. I enjoy it because I can prepay the package and not worry about how much I'm spending on board. $10 drinks can add up quickly.
You also get unlimited non alcoholic drinks including specialty coffees, n/a frozen drinks and sodas (which while not $10 a drink can still add up).
I have purchased the package on both of my previous cruises and at the end when adding up all the covered beverages (alcoholic and non alcoholic) I have always spent less on the package than a la cart.

When you get on ship make sure to put any cell phone on airplane mode or you may incur steep fees from your carrier. When you turn the wifi on on your device the ships system will prompt you with the available packages. If it doesn't you can go to the Internet Kiosks they have set up and it will allow you to purchase it there.

I was on the Valor in July after the upgrade and it did not have USB ports. Still just the one plug.

I was looking at the internet offerings on RC website. They only show the Voom streaming and for 5 devices on a 9 day cruise that equates to $500. I am traveling with an elderly mother that is having some cognitive memory issues and tends to get turned around easily in the ships. The impairment is not to the point that we feel it is a danger to be by herself but she gets flustered and confused easily and it's best for her to be able to connect with us in the event that she gets turned around. If they offer a basic package onboard that would be ideal. But paying over $20 per day just to text is too much.
