  1. Will a person nearly 6'5 have a problem with the shower ?

Lenny, I am 6'4' and can hit the top of the stall with my head on my toes.... Haha.

The shower heads are removable so no issues. I hate hotel rooms were the shower head seams half way down my back.

  2. On January 31, 2016, we sailed from New York City to the Caribbean 14 days round trip. I was quite surprised at some of the conditions we experienced during the cruise.

Our balcony cabin was the smallest cabin that we remember in 55 cruises. In fact, the life jackets had to be kept under the beds to make storage room for our clothes. Total walkway width in front of the closet was about 11 inches. Did you ever see a nightstand that was approximately 7 inches wide? That is what we had for one of the two nightstands.

Much of the storage space was under the couch. We seniors had a hard time accessing this storage because the one or two draws under the couch rubbed against the floor carpet, and we had to get down on our knees to push and pull the draw(s) open and closed because of the carpet rubbing. This was difficult for people like us in the upper sixties.

There was no chair in front of the mirror, just a little stool.

There was a small TV that was not well aligned with the bed.

One of the TV channels provided 25 free movies, but they were generally useless. This was because the 25 movies played in a continuous loop. The NCL employees did not know the movie schedule for any day. So, if you wanted to see some specific movie(s), you had no way of knowing when it/they would start, and the start times changed every day because of the 25-movie continuous loop.

This was very poor on NCL’s part. Why not start on a different movie at 4 AM or so each day (so the movies times would be staggered and different every day of the week) and publish a schedule for each day. This would be easy to do and would allow guests to know what was playing throughout the day, and the starting times.

When I suggested this to the front office, I was told that "providing a list of the movie start times on the free movie channel was not NCL policy." This unfriendly corporate attitude surprised me.

The cheapest bottle of wine was $36.00, and they charged for two production shows.

We missed a port (San Juan) because of a medical evacuation. NCL gave no compensation for the missed port. This ship had more passengers than on any of our previous cruises. It is obvious that (keeping the other variables constant) the more passengers on a ship, the more risk of missing ports because of medical emergencies.

NCL now charges in the free restaurants for some upscale meals that were once free.

Noise levels were very and annoyingly loud in several public areas and restaurants compared to all our previous cruises. In some of the public areas, the captain’s announcements could not be heard or understood because of the background noise level.

Because of how the casino is located relative to the two atriums, cigarette smoke was encountered in some of the main public areas on other decks.

On the plus side, there were still many good offerings in the free restaurants. We were satisfied with the free dining.

Our cabin’s AC cooling was the best we ever experienced on ocean-going ships.

We were generally satisfied with the evening entertainment, and gladly paid for one of the special shows.

And I am sure that most younger folk, children and families would be very happy with the many ship amenities and activities.

We have cruised with NCL many times in the past and hope to do so again in the future.

    Steve

For 55 cruises,, you don't seem to roll with it. I was on the BA and don't recall being charged for shows others than the wine and the circus show,,,

The TV,,, u r on a cruise. May note of them and watch them when us get home.

u have an issue with the number of people based on a the increased risk of medical issues,,, OK

  3. We had a balcony room and my husband just got us an upgrade to the haven!! I'm so excited!!! What to we need to know?? Never been in haven before!! So excited!!! We sail in three days!!

We had the same thing happen on the Breakaway a few weeks back. Have breakfast in the courtyard, have Filet & Eggs, pressed coffee.

    We enjoyed so much.

  4. Got off to weeks ago, played twice.

If the Bingo is in the Theater the sight lines are good and you can see, if in Headliners not great.

Run well, 3 games, one line bingo, 4 corners/ 6 Pack, last is cover all.

They sell 3 different packages, $39, $49, $69. Depending on the package it includes different qty of cards, instant wins and tickets for a 7 day cruise give away drawn the last sea day.

  5. The ship stays in port, and you are free to come and go 24 hours a day. You can explore on your own or take excursions if you prefer.

We never take cruise ships excursions in Bermuda as it's very easy to travel around the country via bus, ferry and taxi.

NJ, I feel the same way. We have been to the island many times and we map it out before going and do the plan. We did the last BA to Bermuda in 2015 and the 50th Bermuda Tatoo, it was great.

We booked then 2016 trip while on the ship

  6. Just got back- would recommend some of the following things:

    1. Waterfall by Spice H20

    2. Try Cagney's once

    3. Try the Pot Pie at O Shennans

    4. Try the Pot Pie at O Shennans again

4a. Order the wings at O Shennans w/o the sauce, will be better, get on side

    5. Call a week before or so to check on upgrading

    6. Also sit out by waterfront during the day- walk around it later at night

    7. Go to GSC for 4-5 hours, make that port priority #1

    8. Have Pot Pie again at O Shennans- to go- and eat on balcony

    9. Go to Howl at Moon

    10. Go to Fat Cats

    11. Try Eggplant Parm

    12. Pack on Friday so you can enjoy Saturday-

    13. Do Bingo 1-4 times but skip slots, Bingo is more sociable

    14. Do Wine Lovers show and when you get there drink everything in sight ASAP as they will replace it.

14b. If you are not sure if the drink is your neighbors; drink it anyway to be on the safe side.

    15. Try to sleep 6 hours a night so you won't be writing a silly list of 21 things to try the evening after you get back and return to work for 11 hours.

    16. Bring one of those 24 ounce or 32 ounce water bottles- they come in handy for orange juice, tea etc.. Especially when faced with having to carry Pot Pie outside.

    17. Think twice about shore excursions, sometimes it is more enjoyable to stay on the ship and spend the money on bingo instead.

    18. Consider doing a shore excursion perhaps after losing at bingo 3 times.

    19. If you are still reading this, consider going to NCL and researching the shore excursions. Or perhaps just read a book instead.

    20. Sometimes it is worth it to pick you cabin even when upgrading- read others reviews to see if there are areas to avoid

    21. Go to the MDR for lunch perhaps at least once or twice- it is a nice break from the buffet and relaxing to sit.

I added 4a, the wings are better w/o the sauce.

  7. Linda - we will be neighbors that week - we are 16124, looking forward to seeing the Haven on the Breakaway! Will be the first time on this ship. Love the Gem and know this will be different!!

Not in the Haven, a Spa cabin on 14. 3rd Spa cabin, 1st two were upgraded to them this time a must. DW loved it the 1st two times so had to do it; its like going from an inside to a balcony u can't go back

  8. I was wondering about parking at the terminal (NYC)' date=' do you unload your bags before you park? Or park, then walk your bags (somewhere) for a porter to take them?[/quote']

Normally DW and I travel with a bag each and park at the pier. We walk the bags to the elevator, down one level.

afromann13, a few things you may already know but still.

    • Bring a pad of post it pads, they are a great way to get a message to the room steward.
    • Power Strip, for charging STUFF
    • Have the Mini Bar emptied. It is a good place to put bottled water you may bring on board.
    • Bring a supply if metal hangers. There are wooden one in the closet, you WILL need more.

  9. Just got home from Sky trip to Bahamas from Miami. Just about constant cricket on the tvs in public spaces. As we walked around the ship every day, maybe 2 tables of people watching at any time. We probably would have stopped for a drink in the afternoon if a major American sport was being shown. The Longboard bar was usually almost empty with cricket on all the tvs. With all those tvs, how about more than 1 sport shown? So many people onboard wore tshirts with names of colleges that have big Am football and basketball programs. How many of them would sit down to watch an American sport and buy a drink? NCL really doesn't get how to make money. Yes they charge $20 to use the water slide at GSC (The prices at GSC are just ridiculous), but no one ever tried to sell us a drink at dinner (even a polite suggestion). All those bars are on the ship for a reason, but with cricket on every tube, they were mostly empty.

jbeeg, that is what I saw, all cricket TV, and if they played some US sports on the TV i would sit there for a while, on a sea day of course.

  10. We just came back from the 9/14 to 9/21 Breakaway cruise. After boarding on Sunday we found that the ship carried ESPN, and we were able to see (if we wanted) the 1PM and 4PM games on CBS. Since they don't get the Fox Sports channel ( channel 5 in NYC) we couldn't catch the Giants game, which seeing how they've been doing was probably a good thing.

There are TVs all over O'Sheehans for easy viewing and at the Maltings bar as well.

The Monday night and Thursday night games were also being carried.

When we were in Bermuda they showed Soccer and Cricket (which apparently is like baseball but even more boring if that's possible :-) .

I tried liking soccer, I really did. I watched a lot of the World Cup this past summer but unfortunately (or fortunately) I still don't get what all the fuss is about. A bunch of men or women run around for 90 minutes and nothing happens. Then the judges add on a certain amount of time (only they know how this is calculated). And they run around some more. Then if it is still a tie they have a kickoff contest. WHAT!!! Why not save all of us two hours and just do the kickoff at the beginning? Sorry. I like a good game where overly muscled men run at each other at 20 miles an hour and get concussions, contusions, broken bones and a future life of premature dementia, arthritis etc.

Why not just bring back gladiators and get it over with.

But if you REALLY want to watch all of those sports, why the heck are you taking a cruise? There's lots of other stuff to do, you know.

Beach, as I said, I am on vacation and I do other thinks, but as DW is doing stuff in the casino I may want to sit at a bar and watch something besides cricket and soccer.

  11. I am on vacation and there are things to do, the daily has them listed, but sometimes I would like to watch some sports.

In Oct 2013 on a cruise from NYC to Florida during the ALCS/NCLS the only the NLCS was played, even after the NLCS and there was a ALCS game being played it was not played.

On a cruise in March the only spirt shown was cricket, the ESPN channel shown was the international channel.

In Aug when the Football pre season was underway and the Hall of Fame game was being played, soccer was on.

Ok so if you are still reading, yes I am on vacation and maybe I should do an activity listing in the daily, and I do, but at time I would like to sit at the sports bar with a beer and a snack and watch a game.

We are sailing from a US port, a US viewed sport would be nice.

A person on the Breakaway last week did say they Football was on, I assume the late game may be shown in H2O, please keep the theme going during the week, Baseball, Golf, Thursday Night Football.

    Happy sailing all.

  12. I saw the pride drop, $160 for me, I email me PCC and he told he I had to call customer relations, when I asked why he said, he could not help me because a different PCC booked the cruise, this doesn't make sense.

I am 62 day out and have made the final payment, so I need to call NCL tomorrow and find out what is happening.
