  1. Just back from back to back cruises. First week on Holland America Westerdam, second week on Carnival Breeze, both out of Miami. Consider that we paid 3 times the price on Westerdam than we did on Breeze for similar cabin and itinerary. Here's how I rated them both,

    Breeze: ship condition 9

    Westerdam: ship condition 8

    Breeze: food 8

    Westerdam: food 6

    Breeze: entertainment 9

    Westerdam: entertainment 5

    Breeze: cabin 9

    Westerdam: cabin 6

    Breeze: overall 8.5

    Westerdam: overall 6

I think Holland America is over-rated and Carnival is not just the party-ship. It appeals to a mass market for good reasons - a fun time for a reasonable price.

Please share your cruise comparisons here.

  2. We love to eat where the locals do. So where do the locals go in Old San Juan for a lovely dinner? Not mega expensive. Just nice, fun, delicious.

Ambiance, local color and perhaps a great view would be a plus.

    Thank you!

  3. My BFF and I take a mom's only cruise every January. This past January we were on the Breeze. Absolutely loved every single thing about the ship.

I'm looking through some of the other ships for next January but none are saying "this one!" We LOVED the Breeze but want to try new ships each year. How do you "beat" the Breeze? It was a GREAT ship!

What ship would you choose for Jan?

Also.....is it in the works to roll out the same internet packages that they offered on the Breeze (specifically the $5 per day social media sites)?

    Thanks!

After the Breeze if not Carnival Do MSC Divina!!

  4. We're staying a couple extra days after our cruise that departs from San Juan. We were hoping to go to Culebra Island on the Monday following the cruise. As I'm conducting the research, I'm seeing a lot of problems with getting tickets for the 9:00 ferry out of Farjardo. I know that we can fly out of Isla Grande in OSJ but that's a bit pricey. Does anyone have some recent experience or knowledge of the ferry service? I don't want to rent a car, drive an hour and a half to Farjardo to find out that I can't get on the ferry!

all depends when you travel...if you drive to Fajardo on monday get there about 6am..on non long weekend you can buy the tickets there..but must be there berfore 6am..for a 9am ferry...there you can buy the 5pm return ticket..or

  5. Did she get the funds restored?

Shes working with the bank!! they told her its insured and they going to refund her money..she did not used the card just try use on one ATM machine first floor at Punta Langosta Pier, and she cancel the transaction, that was the only day she try to use the ATM..Wondering if those ATM are legal? or maybe credit cards copy machines?

  6. Now in 9146 - sideways cabin with the extra wide balcony (B2). Assigned from a Bingo Balcony booking.

    Available B2 cabins: 10242, 10267, 11270 and 11015.

I am PARTICULARLY looking at that 11270, which I think is an aft balcony.

We always have sailed inside guarantee, so this balcony thing is new to us. Neither of us suffers from sea sickness. We do like being near the elevators, which makes 9146 attractive.

    Thoughts?

YE!!! I did the change for 11299 for 25th oct!1

  7. Just finished my first Divina cruise, which I will do a writeup on. However I want to address this “nobody speaks English” diatribe that many people post

The issue is not that the staff does not speak English, but rather most Americans (I am one) are clueless in how to communicate with people where English is not their first language. The reason for this, most Americans have not learned a 2nd language and therefore are not familiar with the difficulties in being less than fluent in a language.

This is made more complicated on Divina, where a passenger is equally likely to speak to the cabin steward in: Portuguese, Spanish, German, Italian, French, or English.

Here are some tips on how to communicate:

    1) Speak directly to the person. It is easy to understand someone when you can look at them as opposed to them being behind you, on the phone, etc.

    2) Give the person a heads up, such as “May I ask a question?” This gives a heads up so they know what language you will be speaking in.

    3) Speak clearly and simply and don’t tell long stories. Example: “ listen my wife has fibromyalgia and I suffer from a herniated L3 and have to keep my leg elevated due to prior blood clot. Can you bring me some extra pillows?”

He/she will have no idea what you’re talking about. They will smile, nod their heads and walked away. Keep it simple, “can we please get some extra pillows?”

    4) Saying the same thing louder when they do not understand does not work. Change your words. “Can I get an extra blanket?” They stare at you blankly. Try “can I get an extra duvet?”

    5) Show them if possible what you are talking about.

    6) Many cultures, do not like to say “I don’t know.” Example: asking directions in Mexico. Even if they do not know, they will give you directions to someplace. Therefore, before asking a question think whether the person might have the answer. At 6 PM the cabin steward has no clue where your suitcase is. Neither does the front desk, so don’t waste time and aggravate yourself by asking.

    7) Your cabin steward and busboys do not have PhD’s in English literature. If they did, they would not be cleaning toilets and collecting empty dishes.

    8) You may have a difficult accent. Georgia, Texas, Alabama and other southern drawls are difficult for foreigners to understand.

Where Carnival, NCL, Royal etc. on Caribbean cruises using mainly hospitality staff from the Islands and so therefore English is usually their first language.

MSC is a European carrier with 5 or 6 official languages if you want your cabin stewards to be from Jamaica, Trinidad, St. Lucia etc. do not choose MSC, you will be disappointed.

Hope this helps. Everyone I encountered spoke some level of English. Some better than others and many quite fluent.

If you believe that no one on the ship speaks English, then please look in the mirror and you will discover the problem.

    Waoo! this awesome!! Fantastic!! excellent!!
