We were just comparing the 2 choices but for this May 2024. Really similar ships and pricing. Our factors were itinerary, Saturday vs Sunday and the Main Entertainment.

Encore- 1 sea day, 4 port days and 1 day glacier bay for cruising.

Visits Juneau (afternoon/evening), Skagway (full day), Ketchikan (morning) and Victoria (night)

Sunday to Sunday cruise (consider transportation to/from cruise, which is easier for you)

    Entertainment- Choir of Man

Bliss- 1 sea day, 5 port days with 1/2 day Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier

Visits Sitka (day), Juneau (morning), Icy Strait Point (morning/early afternoon), Ketchikan (morning) and Victoria (night)

Saturday to Saturday cruise (consider transportation to/from cruise, which is easier for you)

    Entertainment-Jersey Boys

Great thing is you can't go wrong with either ship. We have spent quite a few nights on both. I really enjoy the Choir of Man but we do like the Jersey Boys a lot. We choose the Bliss this coming September for two Alaskan cruises because we liked the itinerary better. Also funny thing our first cruise on the Encore was its first cruise out of Miami in 2019  and I was wearing a Bliss hat and the hotel director stopped me and I talked with him and eventually he sent me a very nice Encore hat.

Another side note on Choir of Man,,, The Birds were on the Encore on Opening night after the pandemic shutdown. And watched the first live stage production with social distancing modifications to keep germy passengers away from the cast.

My favorite NCL show. Saw it 6 times on the first two Encore cruises out of Miami in 2019. Got to know the guys and they were great guys. Also saw the Choir of Man 4 times on the Encore Panama Canal cruise in the fall of 2020.

I do have a question for you about this. When someone purchases a package on their online cruise reservation, it gives a ‘requested delivery date’.

When you purchased it at the bar, did they give you an option of the delivery date? Was this something that you did, and it still didn’t get delivered for two days?

No they didn't ask when I bought it at the bar. Of course the person I bought it from might have been inexperienced doing it. My biggest problem was getting billed for it 5 or 6 times when I only bought it once.

  4. Our experience with buying water onboard wasn't that great. We bought one of the packages onboard at one of the bars. Didn't get delivered for 2 days so I contacted guest relations and it finally got delivered and the hotel directors secretary made that happen. Also we bought it only  once and were charged 6 times for it. Did finally get it straightened out again  with the HD secretary help.

For sure a bummer for many! People are also complaining even with the 10% fcc trying to switch is costing more out of pocket money. At one time, not sure if they still do it, when Royal cancelled they had what was called a shift & lift where you could book a comparable cruise with your original price locked in

Royal still did it last summer. Best deal we have ever got. We had I think a 12 night TA cruise they cancelled and one of the choices offered was a 17 night TA. Same price which was really a low price to begin with for gty balcony and we ended up with an angled balcony.

After the shingles in April 2022, we had a European cruise in July 2022.  On the way to security at lax before our flight to London, I tripped off the up escalator. Thankfully my face broke my fall, split my lip, and a big knot above my left eye.  Looked like DH had beat the crap out of me (he didn’t).  Had a black eye for the entire trip.  DH put us in a travel ban.  Thankfully that has been lifted.

Just to let you know you are not alone. I was going up the escalator  in Detroit to check our bags before getting on a flight to Florida to go on  a cruise and I stumbled and  fell on the escalator and  the bad thing is it felt like I was in a blender as the escalator kept giving me more steps.

I would do HAL on one of their newest ships. We did the Amsterdam this past summer and I was really impressed. Was really nice the hotel director on the Amsterdam used to be a hotel director on NCL that I had met before so we had a few good conversations.

I'm really old the ship we were on was the Rotterdam and we left from Amsterdam.  Guess I will use the being old as an excuse.

I've taken their beer, when they've come to where I'm sitting, but for anybody who has the drink package, it is a meaningless perk.  Just grab two beers on the way to the theatre and you're good to go.

It not always about the beer it is about being able to walk up to bar on the stage and get it and talk with some of the performers as you are walking by them. I've seen the Choir of Man 10 times on the Encore and one time I sat in the front row and was talking with the narrator and he went up on stage and brought me back one. Great show in my opinion. Obviously.

  9. I wouldn't rule out one of the newer ships on HAL. We hadn't been on them for about 20 years but last summer we chose them for a cruise out of Amsterdam to Norway because it worked out well with a 17 night TA from Amsterdam we already had planned. It was not the HAL from years gone by at least to us. The Rotterdam is their newest ship and they have something called the Music Walk that has a BB King Blues Club, Rolling Stone Lounge and Billboard on Board all on it. Also was great that the Hotel director  was a former NCL hotel director who we had met before.  I was going to book it again for this  but the airfare at springbreak killed that idea. I really like NCL as we are Diamond but HAL caught our attention with that ship.

  10. You can't go wrong with either one as we have done both. But for next September we are doing a B2B on the Bliss because I really like ISP because those two cruises do ISP and Sitka. And the Encore doesn't. In ISP we have already booked a whale watching cruise we have used before and they were great and we only had 6 passengers on their boat  much better than the cruise line tour that had about 100 people on it. We just cruised Iceland and Greenland this summer so got to see glaciers and icebergs not that long ago.

  11. I don't expect my TA to keep track of promo's on my cruises or final payments as I know she is busy. Her company does send me reminders about final payments but I also set up reminders in my computer for about two weeks before final payments and I occasionally double check myself to see if anything changed on pricing and promo's etc for my cruises I have booked. From my TA's company I always get a $100 onboard credit and cash back after the cruise. Sometime the cash back is $1,000 but usually much less.

It’s actually either a seating area, for maybe 5 people or where that have a larger scale ship model.  My in-laws were in 14758, while we were in 14158, but we still had no noise issues.  DH is a fairly light sleeper and has never had noise complaints.  This is in our general preferred location, on all ships.  We did find the aft elevators less busy/ crowded then these right by the room.

I would book this room again.

Thank you for your opinion. We did switch to 14158  for our two cruises.

We have a forward facing angled on the Bliss (Deck 14, cabin 14158)...Deck 15 above, there is NOTHING in the space directly above us. We are also the "first" angled from the front of the ship on the deck.  Hoping I picked well.  This is our first angled.  Booked my in-laws in the same cabin directly across in cabin 14758. Other family is in the room next to them, so at least they will know the neighbors, and I can almost guarantee that the balcony will NOT get opened between them...(my FIL asked he what he did to me to get the other family to book next to him...nothing, I just didn't want them next to US)

Will let you know what we think of the cabin/balcony and the wind.

Just curious was noise a problem? And were you able to find out what if anything what  was on deck 15 in the empty space if anything? Right now we have a b2b booked in 14758 and looks like on deck above 15 above is the public restroom. so considering changing. Thanks

We just upgraded using my wife's account (I used mine to upgrade from a balcony to Club Balcony on the Viva a while ago).

This time we booked an Oceanview for an 11 night cruise on the Dawn and upgraded to a balcony. I requested a room on decks 9 or 10 (so there is nothing above or below us), and we got deck 10. The only slight disappointment is that we have a hull balcony. Not a major problem, but a more open one would have been preferable.

The cost of the Oceanview was around £1,000 less than the balcony would have been to book, so overall very happy.

Kind of what we just did today. I am using my  Diamond upgrade to go from an oceanview to a balcony  on a cruise and my wife's on the second cruise of a back to back. Figure between the two cruises we are saving about $1,600.

    Thanks @VMax1700 for this Live!

After being away from sailing on HAL for many, many years, we just booked onto the Rotterdam TA & Norway!

Not sure if this helps but we hadn't sailed with HAL for about 20 years but we just sailed on the Rotterdam in August and really enjoyed it. So much that we are looking at the Rotterdam for next March. For us the Music Walk was great.

Yes. You can order at any bar. And have them deliver it.

Just watch your account. We did that on the Joy in April and didn't get them the so HD secretary got involved and we finally did get our water delivered but the next problem was we got billed for it five times. Did get it fixed.

    As they say...different strokes....

I really liked Choir of Man.  Get there early enough and share a beer with the cast as part of the show.

Saw the show six times on the Encore the first two cruises out of Miami in 2019. Just a fun show and nothing serious about it.  Saw it again on the Encore this past fall still really enjoyed it. One night the narrator went up and got me a beer and brought it to me.

  18. Realizing I am a cranky old man and after about 80 cruises and we have 4 more booked and that maybe all for us. With the hassle of getting to a cruise and home again and the changes being made it might best for us to not cruise any more. This summer  with going to new places for us (Norway, Iceland and Greenland etc) no reason to go back to Europe. Guess I could always change my mind but just don't get as exited about going on a cruise as before.
