  1. And yet, the older, smaller Golden Odyssey is still going strong:

Although incredibly tiny (only 7000 tons), this ship seemed to pack all of the big ship amenities in.

We had an incredible cruise on the Golden Odyssey........including sailing through the Corinth Canal at night....:)

  2. We arrived Saturday night in Old San Juan a day early for our 7 day eastern carribean. We checked into our hotel then proceded to walk to a bar and a man stopped us asking if we speak English. He stated that he was engineer from Milwaukee and him his dad just got jumped a block outside old San Juan. He stated his dad was in the hospital and he just went to the US embassy and they were closed. He proceded to tell him he needed seven dollars to get back to the hotel. First of all I doubted we would get jumped one block outside Old San Juan and secondly his story sounded too rehearsed. It sounded like he told this story a thousand times I suppose he said it so fast because he could tell I wanted to walk away. I then told them their was no money I could give him, he seemed really distressed when I walk away.

We had a great time and came back to spend one more day in Old San Juan. Sure enough I was walking down the street and the same man in a different outfit approached me asking if I spoke English. I just walked away ignored him somewhat shocked, I later asked a homeless American for directions. I then asked him if he knew this guy asked people if they spoke English and he stated yes, he sees him trying the same scam everyday. This man is in his fourties between 5-11 and 6-1 foot tall. Dirty blond hair with a thin build. Be aware of this scam artist and tell him where go if you see him.

    When:

a man stopped us asking if we speak English. He stated that he was engineer from Milwaukee....

    I would have said:

    Congratulations .....and walked away.

Conversations like this always have the same point....to scam you....;)

m/s Nieuw Amsterdam III (1983-present). Delivered to Holland America Line in 1983 and sailed for them until 2000. Purchased by American Classic Cruises in that year and renamed Patriot. Laid up in Honolulu, Hi in 2001 and auctioned off in 2002, returned to HAL as Nieuw Amsterdam. Sold to Louis Cruise Lines and chartered to Thomson Cruise for ten years. Renamed Thomson Spirit and currently sailing.

We had an interesting experience in Alaska.

We were on Sitmar's Fairsky in 1984 and the Nieuw Amsterdam was docked next to us. We discovered that if you showed your Fairsky cabin key, they let you board and visit Nieuw Amsterdam. So we went aboard and enjoyed walking around on her.

    .....never would happen today...

  5. Not sure that this would help. It would have the whole ship screaming around in panic every time there was a report of a fire (which happens much more than you might think). At least this way, most of the passengers are blissfully ignorant of what is going on or what's being investigated.

....which I am sure is the purpose of the codes. Unfortunately we live in a society that stops and gawks at car accidents.

  6. I know that the ships camera's are all over the place, however, I now hear that they can see you on you private balcony. Is this true? I guess its not that private but it is your own for the week. Are they able to see you? Anyone know? I go out in my pj's etc, I don't want to be watched lol....not a pretty site:D

.....you know those signs on trucks that say if you can't see my mirrors.....I can't see you.....;)

well......if you can see the bridge......they can see you....and I would assume there are security cameras (for fire and security) that are not "advertized".....:)

  7. Thanks all, for the info and suggestions.

Leo Jay......glad to see you take the warnings seriously and with appreciation.........because the bad results can be deadly............it is always best to learn to swim or stay afloat......you never know when you will need it.......;)

Hope you can find some snorkeling that meets you ability......it is a great experience.....:)
