  1. Not alarmist that's why I wanted you're feedback and they are precious.

The article is refering some mysterious behavior comparing to all the other times. Maybe the close pass was not that much but it's all the 180 and the rest that I wanted to be cleared out by someone.

Maybe you werent trying to be alarmist, but you should read your original post again.

You refer to a mysterious trajectory, a close pass to the island and a reference to the Concordia.

I think I found the reference to the Concordia offensive, as that Captain failed at all levels.

Captain Kate doesn't deserve to be lumped in there. We had a lovely sailing!

  2. That is a great idea about using the Sauna shower. I have used it before and was wondering how I was going to stand up without slipping, in our in-room shower. It's not likely that I will have an accessible room (looks like they are all booked and I can move a little on my own (with crutches) so this option/idea is great.

    Thanks

Your cabin steward may be able to arrange a small shower chair, which will allow you to use your cabin shower.

  3. Uggggg! I hear you! We were all set to fly to Venice in 2014 when we realized DD's condition had worsened. We had to figure out very quickly how to deal with it while driving the 7 hours to the international airport. My solution was to purchase a wheelchair at a medical supply company in Chicago as soon as they opened at 9 am. We had to be at O'Hare Airport in Chicago by 1pm. It wasn't the vacation we expected, but it was still a family vacation. Luckily, DD was 20 and we could leave her on board the ship while we did some excursions she decided were going to be too much. She enjoyed the ship while everyone else was gone.

Nanny8, I was able to purchase a wheelchair for only $100. It might be worth your while.

Thanks for your reply. So amazing it worked out for you. I won't ask what the condition was, but good that you knew you could manage international travel.

I was busier unpacking and calling insurance to cancel. Positive that without the hysteria we would have cancelled and waited days and days for OR space.

Had no idea I could score a wheelchair for that. We rented for about 80 for the week.

We were very lucky to be able to go. It turned out to be an amazing vacation. Every roadblock turned into an opportunity. By the end everyone knew Ally and was protective of her. Our excursion to watch cliff divers (they had space for mobility issues people but not a companion...no way I was leaving my teenager alone in a foreign country), my husband carried her up and down hundreds of steps (then every one knew him...Dad of the year).

The older boys at the kids club waited downstairs to see if they could help carry her up.

It takes a village. Ours was on the cruise that week!

  4. Happy to hear you are still cruising, even with less than ideal news from your doctor.

Our daughter broke her ankle two days before our cruise. Even though the break required surgery her doctor cleared her to go as the OR schedule was so backed up (and maybe to calm her hysteria too :( ).

She was in an inflatable boot cast. NO WEIGHT bearing at all.

We did allow extra time for security at the airport, it does take far longer to get all the gear through scanners, and a physical pat down.

Once we arrived at the port, I asked if there was an area for her to sit while we waited to check in. We were taken to the front of the line (despite our protest that we would wait). Then they had a staffer put her in a wheelchair and we were escorted on with all people with mobility issues.

As we literally had no time to arrange a wheelchair (I was to busy talking to insurance about cancellation before we were cleared to go), we stopped at the guest service counter and made arrangements to rent a chair on board. This was the only hiccup. We got a chair, but it was oversized for a larger person. A little more than half way through - we were contacted when they located a smaller one.

The ship personnel went above and beyond in terms of helping, honestly I'm not sure we ever asked for help they offered. Pushed her around, got her sodas, talked her through the tender process and how they would load her...it really was incredible.

Our only disappointment was the very few cruisers who were rude (jumping on the elevator first, telling her she was young and not to be lazy, bumping into her).

So prepare with whichever mobility device you decide. The knee roller or a chair. And take care on your excursions. At least you control the ATV. You can decide after a few minutes if it is too much, and your husband can go explore on his own.

Live it up - enjoy your cruise!

  5. Does celebrity give you a beach bag to use? The reason I ask is we had one from a cruise about 10 years ago and cant remember how we got it? Are they free? I don't remember buying it? TY John

    Yes to the beach bag

I believe there was also an umbrella, which was a wonderful surprise! Of course it isn't a complimentary take home one, as I believe the beach bag was.

  6. So I made a payment tonight on my cruise. The Celebrity site says I still owe $452. The receipt I got in my email though says I overpaid by $40. So anyone ever experience this?

I've made two final payments recently. One with a Celebrity agent, the other through the automated attendant.

Both went through correctly to the penny.

Call them to sort it out. Don't want a cancellation because of a glitch.

  7. We're very excited to be embarking on our very first cruise! As newbies to the cruising world, we have a lot of questions, many we have researched online. Hoping someone can help us give clearer answers to the following:

    Luggage tags -

We keep checking each day on the Celebrity site to see if luggage tags are available and they are still not available yet. The cruise leaves in about one month's time so wondering when we can expect them.

    Food -

We like to snack throughout the day and wondering whether smallish meals and snacks (such as fruit, cheese), coffee and tea can be ordered from the restaurants (not specialty) or room service at anytime of the day without extra charges? What kind of food can we expect to order outside of breakfast/lunch/dinner time?

    Dining -

It seems we weren't asked by the travel agent our preference for select or traditional dining and we've been automatically booked into the traditional dining at 8.30. (6.00pm is unavailable on the site). Our preference is select dining (even if it might mean a bit of queuing) and wondering how we can get this changed as we can't seem to do this online. Do we have to call them or do we change it onboard? Also, with traditional or select dining, do we have to share a table or will there be tables for 2 only?

Also, is this 8.30 slot only specific to the Main Dining Room dining? What if we wanted to dine at the Oceanview buffet. Can we turn up at anytime?

    Port days -

During the days at port, are we free to venture out and back on board as we please throughout the day? For example, can we go out for a walk in the morning and then come back to the boat for lunch and drinks and then head out again?

Thanks for everyone's insights in advance!

    Sorry...forgot about ports.

Yes you can go off and on as you wish. Keep in mind tender ports take far more time. You will go through security each time you reboard. We have done as you suggest, wander in the morning, on ship for lunch, afternoon excursion.

Departure time is posted at the gangway, along with the actual time you must return to the ship.

One important thing off the top. You indicate the travel agent did ask about you preference for dining time.

If you booked through your own travel agent, that individual needs to guide you through the process. They will need to order you luggage tags (they call and request that they get mailed). The agent also must request select dining. If select you can opt to dine alone or share. If you stick with 830 pm ask the agent if the request was table for two.

Good for you to want to do some research...but your agent should be answering all of these questions.

Food...there are items available in the Oceanview cafe through the day.

If you choose Oceanview cafe for dinner go at anytime. Your "Celebrity Today" newsletter will list dining types available and times.

If you booked with a Celebrity agent. Call them and ask all of your questions. They are helpful and friendly, and will take the time you need to understand the cruise experience.

    Happy travels.

  9. 19 hour drive if you get desperate.

We did this once. Drove from Edmonton Alberta Canada to Long Beach.

It was our Spring break and flights were outrageously expensive.

26 hours each way. 5 states in one day. A zillion movies for the back seat passengers. Good memories!

  10. Where are you leaving from? I usually cross to Niagara Falls NY to fly to FLL or Miami for $200-$350 round trip a few times a year. Hundreds less than flying out of Canada.

Lucky you. We are in Edmonton. No jumping the border for a cheap flight.

  11. You have NO idea how lucky you are. This wouldn't come close to covering taxes let alone a fare! Our one way from Canada to MIA would be about 500.

    Admittedly that was off topic.

I agree with checking West Palm or other nearby airports.

In Canada we book air prior to cruise. Not sure I can advise on a 120 or 90 day strategy. Hope this works out.

  12. I will try to answer these few questions in between laundry ! Will do a more complete review in a day or so.

    1. Live entertainment is not what it used to be - mostly "DJ" or canned music by pool. There was a group (3 I believe) who were very good and it seemed that they played around 4pm by the pool and then later on at night. On port days however there was just canned music for most of the time.

There was a cello/violinist duo by Cafe Bacio around 5pm and again at 8 pm most nights. Also a newly engaged couple - he played guitar I think and she sang and they were very good - we mostly caught them at Sunset Bar at night.

We did enjoy the "dance" music at Revelations Lounge. Also - not sure where but at night they did have a "dance to your own headset" event that a lot of people were talking about in the pool one day. I guess you get your own headset and only you can hear your music and you dance to your music but others don't know what your music is and it sounded like a lot of fun. So you basically have a dance floor with people with their own headsets dancing to their own "beat" !

We miss the steel bands of years ago - I know we are dating ourselves ! !

The ports were mostly good - -St. Thomas however was a surprise as we did not dock at Havensight as we had expected. We have been to St. Thomas many many times and always docked at Havensight and were anticipating the same. But Celebrity docks at Crown Bay dock which has considerably fewer shops right there. To go into town it was $4 pp one way in an open side taxi/mini van - which is a reasonable alternative - but my husband hurt his back the week prior to our leaving and we didn't want to chance a bumpy taxi ride so we just visited the few stores right there. I did manage to spend money so it wasn't a total loss ! !

St. Martaan - again we just stayed close to the shopping by the ship - the usual t-shirts, hats - I did get a lovely table runner at a linen store for $10 which seemed very reasonable.

St. Croix - again no excursions due to hubby's back - just walked a little and the usual t-shirt/hat purchase and used it as a ship day

Martinique - oh dear - I hope I don't offend anyone but it was by far the worst port we have EVER been to. Just awful and I question why it is included - they had about 10 tents right by the ship selling hats, shirts etc. - we decided to walk into town a bit - I had read that being a very French island you can purchase purfume at a discount as well as French beauty products. The walk from the ship to the center was about 10 min - but it was so dirty, broken sidewaks, and very very depressed area. "Town" was not much better. I did go to three "pharmacies" where I had read is the place to get French creams, perfume, etc. but all three were the same - very very little stock - I am talking shelves bare for the most part. They had none of the items I was looking for - which were not that unusual - just some flowery shower gel, moisturizing cream etc. I don't know how the beaches were as we were unable to go to them (again hubby's back) but I didn't hear of anyone raving about them that night at dinner.

We did enjoy St. Kitts - nice big open center right by the ship - lots of shopping/eating/casino opportunities.

Dominica was also good - I know it is a pretty island and full of falls, pools, etc. which unfortunately we did not do (hubby's back) but we did walk to the Gardens - it was very hot and uphill a bit and once we got there it was more of an open green space than true "gardens". But we enjoyed seeing something other than a crowded center full of t-shirts and hats. There were some interesting trees/shurbs there but very few flowers. Thankfully the walk back was downhill !

I did stop in the "indoor market" - most stalls were very similar - and bought some whole nutmeg and vanilla.

This was a b2b Caribbean cruise that left from Newark - more of a repositioning for the first week and then sailed from San Juan. Again - San Juan we were not at the close pier to the center but at the one further out.

As for leaving "your" room clean (the last poster's comment) - we did leave it clean and had a wonderful cabin steward "Roberto" from Costa Rica. But be aware that the drawers in the closet stick something terrible - you have to yank them open and practically kick them shut for them to close! The Summit is showing her years (as many of us do !). And unfortunately we did have people on either side smoking on their balcony - usually very late at night after we had gone to bed (after midnight) and while their smoke did come into our cabin (our slider was open a few inches for the ocean sound) we were just too tired to protest to guest services. Lesson learned and next time we will not suffer in silence.

Hope I have answered these questions. Happy to answer more and do intend a better review of the good and not so good points of this cruise line.

Thanks for the information you provided. Very helpful!

Also appreciate your review of Qsine. I really want to try it, but might wait until our April cruise when we celebrate our 25th.

  13. No fun reading the FB thread. Lots of opinion and speculation but little real info[emoji53]

They might want to check out the Pier (Pleasure Pier iirc) it's a fun and snall amusement park. Or wander the beach. It sounds like they might have some extra time before boarding.

If the itinerary happens to get modified they will want to gather any private excursion contact info...to touch base with those tour operators.

  14. If you have the same cabin on both trips, do you have to pack your suitcases after the first leg? The PVP I had link my trips said I would. I don't understand why...its the same cabin! Will they take my luggage off then bring it back up??

Buckeye is right. Your steward will just take care of regular cleaning in your room on change over day. No need to pack.

When we did it there were about 75 b2b. Well organized, and the letter will clearly spell everything out. I think it took 30 minutes max to go off and then back on.

Then you get the best pool chair!

  15. Hi! I am going on a 2 night mini cruise on the eclipse in may and included in the price is a standard drinks package. I know there is a lot of info on the pros and cons of classic/premium but there doesn't seem to be much information about what you get with a standard? I have seen two people post two different menus (one had a decent amount of cocktails, the other one didn't!). Could anyone clarify what you get on this as I can't imagine a 6 dollar limit on drinks goes far, and also does anyone know how much it would be to upgrade from a standard package?! Thank you in advance

Hope the photo is clear enough. We went through the whole list even though we were classic. Golden Cadillac was sooooo good.
