On a good day it's only around 80-90 minutes to Marathon from KW (obviously depending on where exactly in Marathon you are going).  The problem is most of the Overseas highway is one lane on each side and traffic incident can cause delays for miles, or shut it down completely.  Last time we drove down, a crane fell over somewhere around Islamorada and held up traffic for hours.

Have to agree with CT Sean...and it will also depend on what day you will be there. Weekend traffic or road construction can affect the travel time. We were stuck behind a tanker truck wreck that blocked Overseas Highway for over 8 hours, and no options for other roads to get to Key West.

  2. Well most cabs just cruise around Mallory and you should be able to have any business call one for you, and it should not take long to get one to the airport. Hope you have plenty of time in case of traffic.

I see we will be arriving at Outer Mole pier, take the trolley 5-15 minutes to Mallory Square, or three blocks from it.  Where will taxis be located so we can get to the airport for our car rental?  Thanks for any info!

Rental car??? Why a car fo a few hours?

  4. Here is the link to the Key West ship calendar and you can look up where you dock by the date. If you do dock at the OM or Outer Mole, it is the Navy pier and the shuttles run very often. It depends on if you ride a Conch Train or Old Town Trolly, but both end up on Front Street close to Duval Street.

Here is a video showing the the route from the Outer Mole to Mallory Square area.

  5. Body paint is a Fantasy Fest thing and is allowed on the street inside the  "Fantasy Zone".

    Here are rules of conduct.

Body painting is allowed but must be done in enclosed or screened in areas, entirely out of public view. Painted female breasts are permitted, but ONLY ALLOWED within the designated "Fantasy Zone".

Please wear a cover-up to avoid ILLEGAL exposure on public property and on all city streets outside of the "Fantasy Zone".

  6. I am going too guess that it is about 1/2 mile walk the shortest way, depending on the route you take. I would suggest that you leave B Pier and go straight ahead and turn left on Front St. then right on Green St, (at Mel Fischer Maritime Museum) then straight down green street to the harbor walk (just past Elizabeth St..Kermits K. W pie shop on right) and go straight on the harbor walk to Schooners Wharf. This video is down Green St. to the harbor walk.

Also in this video, I pass Schooners Wharf at 2:22 into the video, and when I turn right at Whitehead St at 4:03, if you went straight it would take you to Margaritaville Resort which is in front of B Pier. Hope this helps you out.

By the way..I love Schooners for breakfast!!!

You are a wealth of knowledge, Thank you.  We are going on the Tiki Hut Boat Sandbar Tour when we are in Key West.  Do local stores, CVS, Gas Stations, etc. sell beer for purchase (6 packs, etc.)  BYOB on the Tour as you are aware.. Are there places close to the Tiki Boat where you can purchase same.. Not sure of the Florida Laws.. Thanks..

Thank you for the nice comment.

I would only guess that the sandbar tour leaves from Hurricane Hole witch is on Stock Island, and that is a distance from the ship docks. They have a restaurant and bar there, and even though I have eaten there, not sure about take-out.  There are lots of CVS, gas station mini marts in KW where you can get beer to take with you, and I am sure a quick stop is worth the savings at a mini mart.

Check my channel for lots of Key West videos.

We are going to Cuba in October-  Was thinking about doing a tour in an older car- Any thoughts or suggestions...appreciated-  Thanks..

I found a guy (Blexie) who does private tours fro 10am to 4pm with an old car, and you go where you want to go. We rode in a 1960 lime green Buick in perfect shape. He spoke perfect English, stayed with us even as we shopped so we got what we wanted and made sure we did not get taken on the money end. You can email him via his webpage here.

  9. Found Lagerheads a couple years ago, and this year I was there for the boat races, and they have tables on the beach to watch them right where they turn around in the harbor. Beer sold in a bucket and good food, so no reason to leave, and when hot just go for a quick swim.

When on vacay..try the Cruising' Tiki for sunset..very cool, or go on the bi-plane ride, it is a blast!! I have video of those too.

We are docking at Pier B in KW.

Thanks for the Cuba video...was very nice ( I didn't realize Old Town was so poor!).  I'm sure this will ben an eye opener!

Yes it is very poor...only the main square around the ship terminal has been renovated to make it look good for the tourists. I also have more videos posted at that channel about Cuba, and lots of videos of Key West.

I also would suggest you look at Lagerheads Beach Bar as it is close to the where you will be docking. They have good food and a nice beach also.  Here is a video to show you the way to get there.

After reading all the comments about the lack of beaches in KW I'm bummed:(  But I think me and my girlfriends will go to Ft. Zachary beach. We dock at the pier where you can get right off the ship and it's a pretty easy walk to the Fort. Our cruise is Key West from 12:00 - 6:00 and Havana, Cuba the next day. So our only chance of a beach is KW. I'm so excited about Havana and we want to take an all day tour of the city.

Thanks for all the opinions … it's helpful:)

If you are talking about docking at Outer Mole/Nay pier? You will not be able to walk from there..you have to take a shuttle.

We went to Cuba and loved it...would not want to live there, but was great to visit and see what we have heard of for years. Not sure when your cruise is, but we were there in August and it was HOT!! Make sure you get a good tour guide that speaks good English as it will help you a bunch. Have a great trip.

Here is a video you might like.

  12. I have been on the Cruisin' Tiki for the 2 hour sunset cruise twice, and love it. There are only 6 passengers per tiki plus the captain. It is byob and they provide water, soda and the ice chest to keep drinks cold. You can find the web page here and I would suggest you look at the "Book now" page also.

They do leave from Mello Cafe on North Roosevelt and Hurricane Hole on US1 on Stock Island. Both would require a cab to get there and back to the ship.

You can see my video from the tiki here.
