  1. The insurer will still pay even if another port was substituted.

They will not pay if you received some compensation - e.g. on board credit - from P&O.

I notice the letter Vampiress88 shows does not refer to compensation, but if some were being paid it would surely say so on the letter to further "sweeten the pill", so I would expect most if not all insurance companies to accept Vampiress88's example without further query - i.e. the issued on board type.

Do you think this letter will be good enough?

    Yes, that's the one.

This one worked for us when we forgot to get the letter issued on board and had to ask P&O for a letter after we had returned :

    Booking reference:

    Dear .............

Further to your recent request, please find the following information to assist you with your travel insurance claim.

This serves to confirm that on 11 November 2020, Mr and Mrs .........  booked on Aurora R209, to sail with P&O Cruises, which sailed from Southampton 8 July 2022.

Your confirmation invoice issued to you at the time of booking should serve as costing for this holiday for your insurance claim.

During the cruise, due to adverse weather conditions, Aurora’s call to Visby on 15 July 2022 was cancelled and the ship remained at sea.  However, to ensure that guests were able to enjoy time ashore, Tallinn, Estonia, was added to the itinerary and the port of call was successfully achieved on 16 July 2022.

I can confirm that no refunds or compensation have been given by P&O Cruises in light of this amendment.

I trust this information is suitable for your claim, should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Yours sincerely

I'm off on Azura in a couple of weeks and have Arvia and Iona to look forward to next year all being well, I shall enjoy them the best I can whilst my health and legs allow me.

Your comment about health and legs is so apposite.

"You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" as the song says.

  4. I don't know why, but I don't come in via "Boards". I would book-mark a page from any topic (which you must have been able to do to get to where your post was listed before it was moved), then next time I want to read the boards I click on my saved bookmark of that page to get it back; scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Go to topic listing" and this brings me to the topics summary page in real time/updated.

    It's a workaround.

As much as I'm sceptical, I won't damn the product until I've tried it.

PORT ROYAL: One had the identical kind thought regarding P&O - Once bitten……

Victoria2:  One also had sceptical thoughts on P&O but one went with friends  for a shortie and one had a marvellous time. One wouldn't go again on P&O unless it was for a short break and with a crowd but it shows one can enjoy something one had reservations about.

    I make that One-all.

  6. Another point to be totally comprehensive, if the Cruise company pay out compensation, perhaps as extra On Board Credit, then the insurance company will not pay out, so it is important that the letter from the cruise line states that no compensation was given out for the missed port. Interestingly, if a substitute port is achieved instead, so that you have the same number of ports as planned when you left port, this does not invalidate a claim becuase the insurance (or at least mine) was specific to the ports on the itinerary when you set sail.

Apologies, I meant for example arriving at the port and it was too windy to land, it's happened twice to me once at Alesund and once at Antigua. Both resulted in a day at sea. I wasn't bothered to be honest, but I wondered if you need a letter from the purser because the only 'evidence' I would have had was memory of the captain's announcement. You are correct though I should read my policy and be prepared.

Hattie is quite right - I had not noticed that the change to the itinerary here was before sailing.

I tried to claim for the pre-cruise loss of St Petersburg too but the insurance would not pay out.

For the situation you describe above, Yaldi, the trick is to obtain the standard "missed port" letter from Reception on the day of the change, or at least before you disembark.

Apart from a copy of your cruise booking form to prove you had paid for the cruise, that was all my insurance company wanted and paid out £75 x 2 persons (you have to buy Cruise Cover as an extra with missed ports included, of course).

I didn't know about needing to go to reception and waited until after the cruise to contact P&O for the letter to confirm that the port was missed and the reason (weather-related), which took several weeks to materialise, but then the insurance company paid out within 24 hours.

    Can you explain further?

I was on that cruise - the port was cancelled before we left Barcelona - we got a letter  8 September (cruise departed 10 October)

In light of the current geopolitical situation in Sri Lanka, we have amended the itinerary for your voyage and shall no longer be calling at Colombo

After a careful review of the options, as a replacement, we’re pleased to say we’ve secured an additional berth in Singapore on 29 October 2022. This means you will now be able to enjoy an overnight call in this cosmopolitan port.

Thanks for posting this. There is a general point re "Missed Port Insurance" here that readers may not be aware of.

The letter I secured from a similar situation from P&O also stated that no compensation was being paid to passengers (because a replacement port was being provided) - this was an aspect looked for by the insurance company before they would pay out.

We missed Visby and went to Tallinn instead but the insurance company still paid out for the missed port as it was on the original itinerary. Visby was missed due to bad weather - I am not sure whether they would have paid out if the reason had been non-weather related - depends on the policy wording - always a tricky area!

  9. I think I remember P&O saying that "although extra OBC given may not show up on your documents/web account, it will be there on your account when you board, and not to worry".

    Good luck with the email!

Thanks for the info.  I found the app (and I understand it's not really an app) useful on Ventura and was hoping for the same on Arcadia - but perhaps not!

Apparently didn't go into QE and QV which are basically Arcadia in other clothing.  The "new" wifi on them isn't ver good either. Assumedly those two are being kept so if they didn't qualify not much hope for poor Aurora and Arcadia.

Absolutely no problems with the "App" on Aurora in June this year.

I just repainted our pebbledash a lovely sunnshine yellow 😎 but in some areas like the old town of Stavanger the colours of houses are probably guided by local rules.

It may show confidence in the market, however markets are so fickle these days so who knows. Better to spend your money on cruising than investing in stock market

Except that if you spend it on the markets you don't have to fill in a Health Questionnaire!

My wife and I are booked on G238 to Spain and Portugal, departing 26th November. The cruise is effectively our 6th attempt (thanks Covid) at a holiday to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, (we've now been married over 28 years!) so I'm toying with purchasing the Ultimate Celebration Package as a treat for us both. I can see how the champagne and chocolates and robes, etc all work but has anyone had any experience of this package and if so can you shed light on how other aspects work out? In particular, it includes two massages - do we book them on the ship or in advance of sailing? It incudes meals in two speciality restaurants - given how they often sell out how do we book those and how does it work in a flexible cost venue like Sindhu? And it includes a framed portrait photo - again how does this work? Oh, and I assume the P&O robe and slippers mentioned in the package are ours to keep? Any answers much appreciated.

Congratulations! - we were similar to you in that it took until our 53rd anniversary year to achieve our Golden Wedding cruise! Hang on in there!

  14. Given the  current way P&O are treating their customers I would expect them to say a resounding NO - asking and getting anything else is half-way to SELECT for which SELECT passengers have paid a significant premium. The whole point of SAVER is that you don't have a choice.

On the other hand, if you phone P&O Customer Services on Monday you might get someone who is feeling accomodating who will be able to help you.

    Good luck!

They do seem to be mimicking some of the Ryanair approach for charging for something that was once free. What next charging for priority boarding and disembarkation, a charge for every piece of luggage you take onboard.

    Doh! Now you've done it!

I bet those suggestions are already in an email winging its way to Head Office!

Its on the menu shown on previous page.   I must try that,  I'll scroll through my next cruise menu with anticipation!  🤣

    Good spot!

One for Peter Kay, I think.

They'll be serving garlic bread and cheese cake next!
