1. Does Seaside offer an anytime dinning experience? Getting ready to book our summer cruise, and trying to decide between Seaside and Getaway. Kids don't really like dressing up anymore for dinner so that may be a deal breaker for them.

  2. Enjoying your review! On NCL did you just prefer to eat at the charge restaurants or was there a reason you didn't want to eat at the included dining room? Forgive me if you mentioned this already.

With NCL and the Free at Sea promotion they have you can chose one or more of the following depending on the room type your booked in and its included in your price:

    - Free Drinks

    -Free Speciality Dinning

    -3rd/4th Guest Sail Free

    -Free Wifi

    -Shore Excursions

Not sure if the OP chose the speciality dinning, but if I had to guess Im thinking thats maybe why they ate at the speciality restaurants so much.

  3. Can you recommend a cruise line with better food that is somewhat more expensive? I honestly saw a menu that had NO entrees that appealed to me except the ones that are extra. Sure, you can pay $35 pp per night to go to the steakhouse. That is $490 more. I'd rather pay more for the cruise to begin with than get nickeled and dimed to death once on it.

Why do you have to pay more for a cruise? There is a big myth on the CCL board that NCL and RCI are hundreds of dollars more and that's simply just not the case. All you have to do is keep watch, and bargains are plentiful. Perfect example, just booked a few days ago a last minute cruise for April on NCL Getaway. It was only $62 more than an nearly 10 yr. old CCL vessel with none of the bells and whistles that Getaway has. On NCL you don't have to eat in the MDR, with the Free at Sea promotion, you can eat at a specialty resurturant every night and guess what...it's already built into the price of your cruise.

  4. CCL is sub par to NCL in MANY ways. There are some minor similarities between all cruise lines, but overall, CCL is not even close to the quality cruise line that NCL is.

Carnival prior to say 2012 was great! Since then IMHO, its exactly how you described it. A continual cheapening of the brand/downgrade of the product.

  5. Sailing CCL and then next going to NCL is like having dinner at McDonalds and then next going to eat at Ruths Chris.

Agreed! We sailed exclusively on CCL. We became Platinum, and even purchased the ill fated Carnival Vacation Club. We wanted to take a last minute cruise a few years ago. Carnival had no balconies available so we booked the NCL Star last minute...long story short we haven't looked back. We did return to CCL in 2014, due to NCL's insane prices that year. It was a horrible decision. The Valor was in terrible condition, food was subpar, and the entertainment was the same as it was in 2004. Love NCL for the entertainment and dinning options. Not to mention the new ships are phenomenal.

  6. Actually, they don't. For cruises out of the US, the drinking age on NCL is 21, and there is no possibility of a change in status during the cruise, even if the person turns 21 during the cruise. What NCL does allow is for the parent to change the status of the young adult to allow beer and wine consumption during the cruise, but again, once made, the status won't change.

NCL actually allows 18yrs with parent consent to purchase and consume so not just consume:

What is the minimum age for purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages?

Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol. With the exception of Alaska and Hawaii itineraries, Norwegian permits young adults to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only while onboard and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorization will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel. However, passengers 18 years of age or older are permitted to consume beer and wine when sailing on round-trip European and Australian voyages without having to complete the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form.

  7. Surprised people are shocked at NCLH's financials and how FDR has handled everything. All one has to do is research Renaissance Cruises, to get an idea of what happens when FDR goes unchecked. Granted Renaissance had numerous problems, but a fair share of them were direct result of policies and practices that FDR put in place. I have no idea what FDR has promised Apollo, but they seem to love the man despite his shortcomings.

Whats even more shocking to me is the willingness of Andy Stuart to go along with FDR's horrendous decisions. Stuart is generally credited to be the brains behind many of NCL's innovations, one would think he would strive to protect everything he had help build. Just makes me wonder how much clout, control, and decision making he truly has.

  8. So you found a lower price on one cruise and that is the basis of carnival def going up. Got it.

Carnival has def gone up. Carnival used to be priced well below the competition, and now they are pretty close to it. My upcoming NCL Escape cruise was just a $100pp more for a brand new, state of the art ship compared to a Carnival ship thats been sailing 10+ yrs. No brainer which one to pick for me...

  9. Heres the e-mail I got:

    Dear Randy :

    IMPORTANT: ITINERARY CHANGE INFORMATION

In an effort to allow more guests the opportunity to sail Norwegian Escape's 7-Day Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Miami, we have changed her scheduled Miami departure time from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This change will allow guests later flight options for arriving in Miami and will apply to all 7-Day Eastern Caribbean sailings from May 7 - December 31, 2016. Guests continue to be invited to board the ship at their regularly scheduled times and begin enjoying all the exciting amenities Norwegian Escape has to offer.

  10. For general information. Carnival, has who I consider one of the top 3 Alaska ship naturalists- Michelle. I've sailed with her for years, and she gets better and better. (Celebrity has the other 2).

With Tracy Arm- in my opinion, especially for first timers- it is "necessary" to purchase the add on ship- Tracy Arm boat tour. Otherwise, plan on NOT getting past Sawyer Island, and getting only a distant, partial view of the South Sawyer Glacier. The boat tour is a grossly superior transit, compared to the cruise ship.

I agree she is very, very good. Although she can go a bit overboard with some of her announcements. NCL uses park rangers from Glacier Bay National Park and they are also very good.

  11. I'm confused, I thought the Alaskan cruises were always northern or southern passage. We're thinkin about one + I see now they sail roundtrip from Seattle in 7 days. Is this really enough time to get up there, see anything, + return? What's the weather like? Hate to spend good money to go somewhere colder than it is at home. really confused :(

While Carnival offers a great product, your doing yourself an injustice if you sail with Carnival to Alaska unless your looking at one of the few cruises they have that goes to Glacier Bay. Princess, HAL, and NCL are by far and away the best when it comes to Alaska cruises. Those three have it down to a science and have just about all the permits for Glacier Bay. This is in no way disrespectful to Carnival. I have sailed them to Alaska but the cruise was no way comparable to my NCL Alaska cruises.

  12. For those upset by the prime rib issue, would it have been more palatable if they would have removed the prime rib all together from all menus and added a 10 ounce filet to the upcharge menu? I'm thinking this might have been their other option. This would just be a menu change, where they would not offer the prime rib any longer.

I think people would be ok had they gone about this in a better way, like Carnival maybe. On Carnival one can still get a free steak or lobster on the menu, but one can get an even better one for an upcharge. I think had NCL kept the original prime rib, but added the new one as an uncharge people wouldn't be so upset.

  13.
Do you realize you lose your point when you start exaggerating? The food hasn't been an all inclusive in years, my first cruise was in 2011 and they had pay restaurants. If you don't like the things that they are charging for don't eat them. There are still many free options.
So food hasn't been all inclusive in years, but there are still free options? Do you ever think about some of the stuff you post? If some venues are free and included in my NCL cruise fare and one has no intention of eating at anything other than the MDR and Garden Cafe, then the food is all inclusive.
  14. Without commenting on all the segments of these string of comments, I will say, based on what you are saying, you should not stay with NCL.

The puzzle for me is the posters that comment on how much better some of the other lines are, or the fact that they are now a better value, why not take them for a couple of cruises and then let us know how much better it really is. Without trotting out the old tired cliches about going to another line. How about some of the many that for the last 10 months or so continually comment that they are leaving or are cancelling, I really wish a few would actually do it and then report after taking a couple of cruises. I really would like to know if the grass is really greener on the other side! As a curiosity, I just did a mock booking on Carnival for a suite during the same week as my current NCL cruise. It is about $1K more expensive than NCL and there suite life does not even come close. MSC was over $2K more expensive. I'm not sure what the answer is. But I'd love to hear from a few that actually go to the other lines.

My experience has been the exact opposite. CCL has been much cheaper, as is MSC. My upcoming cruise on MSC Divina in the MSC Yacht Club was several hundred per person cheaper than a standard balcony on NCL.

  15. I actually called on Tuesday and spoke to someone and after about 15 mins on the phone I got it added to my dashboard and was able to do the web check in. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
