  1. Seems like the Magic is coming to Port Canaveral.

Personally, we sailed on the Allure and the Dream within months of each other. While the Allure was absolutely wonderful, we had a great time on the Dream as well.

The Dream class is as good as it gets on Carnival (at least until Vista gets here). So I wouldn't hesitate to take the Magic out of Port Canaveral, even if the Oasis is the competing ship.

Of all the cruises I've been on, our Allure cruise was our least favorite. The ship is stunning but outside of that it was the worst cruise experience we have ever been had.

  2. Yes and infact I did. I was once a loyal Carnival cruiser...however once they changed the loyalty program, I haven't stepped foot on another Carnival vessel. It has nothing to do with getting things free for being a Platinum customer but all to do with by making those changes, it displayed Carnival's true feelings. The put off an attitude that they didn't care about the customers who had spent thousands of dollars on Carnival vacations over the years. Its the small things that companies do that say they appreciate your business or in some cases display they could care less as they are now going after a different demographic. At the same time the prices of Carnival's competitors became very comparable with Carnival as Carnival slightly raised their prices and allowed us to branch out. We tried both NCL and RCI. In fact we fell in love with the NCL product and regret not giving them a try much sooner.

  3. Maybe they could barely afford the actual cruise rate and all the mandatory taxes/port fees, so dropping the discretionary item allows them to take a loved one or their family on a nice vacation. The published DSC can add up to a big chunk of change.

If one can't afford to pay they DSC, then they shouldn't be on a cruise. The DSC is pennies when compared to everything else. The crew work hard for what little they get out of the DSC.

  4. Tracy Arm doesn't have big glaciers until you get all the way to the end (which the ships more often than not don't reach), where the Sawyer Glacier is located. This passage has more "green" scenery than Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier which have more dramatic glacier scenery. That's one of the main reasons why we (and many others) choose an itinerary with Glacier Bay instead of Tracy Arm. Glacier Bay was absolutely breathtaking. We pulled up right to the face of several glaciers where we could see and hear the glaciers calving. Amazing.

You are exactly right. We did NCL Sun last year and went to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier...our CCL cruise on the Spirit didnt come close to showing us the breathtaking views we saw by going to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

  5. So, since the Jewel is mentioned several times in this thread, does that mean it's just the Jewel that is going here for now?

We will be on the Sun in November and have not received any emails or notifications that we will be going here instead of Roatan and was just wondering before I book any excursion in Roatan. :)

Yes, the Jewel is the only NCL ship offering calls there. All the rest are still going to Roatan. The Jewel had a mix offering of either going to the Banana Coast, or Roatan alternating weekly. Seems now a lot of the Jewel sailings are being moved to almost all going to Banana Coast.

  6. Carnival has a ship down under, i guess maybe NCL wants to try to compete with Carnival in that market

In a sense Carnival Cruise Lines doesn't. The Carnival Spirit was transferred to Carnival Australia and is run exclusively by Carnival Australia. If you go to Carnival's own website, you will see the Spirit isn't even listed, nor is Australia even an option to book a cruise.

  7. Charleston doesn't have the infrastructure to support another ship until they stop fighting about the proposed terminals and actually build them. Until then, one boat is all they can handle, and Carnival has the seniority there. I would LOOOOVE for them to get another, though. Easiest cruise I've taken so far to just leave the house at 8am and park the car at the terminal.

Agreed, the Union Pier Terminal is long overdue. I wasn't cruising NCL back in the early to mid 2000's when they had a ship based in Charleston. My Fantasy cruise from Charleston was one of my last Carnival cruises before jumping ship to NCL. Your right even from the Upstate its a 3 hour drive to Charleston, very easy and convenient. I heard that the port authority actually won their lawsuit so maybe we will get some progress going...or sadly not, as Im sure all those historical societies will have this thing tied up in appeal's court for years.

  8. You're wrong.

    Please read: http://www.tradewindsnews.com/weekly/336877/largest-ncl-shareholder-paves-way-for-188bn-sale

A majority shareholder is not the largest shareholder. The definition applies only to entities that own more than 50% of all shares. Genting hasn't been in that position since 2007.

Just found this article from Malaysia thats says they are still the largest, but your right seems they are gearing up to sell the rest of their shares. Couldn't read your article as Im not a subscriber.

    http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/highlights/278655-highlight-genting-hk-to-sell-entire-rm7-bln-stake-in-norwegian-cruise-line.html

  9. Genting has already sold most of their stake in NCL, and it's highly likely they'll sell the rest in the near future. It's been years since they were the majority shareholder and held control of the board of directors. If Genting ownership and control was keeping NCL from competing in Asia, that restriction should be gone by the time these new ships come online.

Epic will be the only ship left in Europe by the start of 2016. Jade is going to Houston and Spirit is going to Port Canaveral.

Well, at least you admit that you might have been wrong :p

They are still the largest shareholders per Yahoo Finance. Genting Group-43.4%, Apollo Management-32.5%, and TPG Capital 10.8%. To this day, the very back cover of NCL brochures have the Genting Group/Star Cruises logo on it.

  10. I have to believe a new ship will head to China, maybe one home ported in the UK. Australia is another possibility.

China is where the money is, not the US Caribbean market. So like RCI, and Costa I think NCL will send tonnage to the arena.

As for the rumor of a future 200,000 ton ship......I think that still may happen. It will require Meyer Werft of fully take over the Turku yard from STK and then build their facility to support their construction process....that will take time.

Who would have thought NCL would get this financially healthy:cool:

I may be wrong but I don't see NCL moving ships to Asia at this time. Let's not forget that NCL's sister company is Star Cruises and they already dominate the market over there. It doesn't make sense to me with Epic, Jade, and Spirit all based in Europe to add a 4th ship. I could see Australia, and a ship based year round on the West Coast as a possibility as well. Just please base one in Charleston NCL, even if it's just seasonal

  11. This is copied from the survey I received:

Next few questions are about an offer Norwegian might consider.

Please read the details of the following offer:

    Norwegian’s All-Inclusive Offer

Purchase the All-Inclusive Onboard Package worth over $750 for just $549! Plus, save an additional 10% on your cruise fare.

The All-Inclusive Onboard Package for $549 includes:

    Ultimate Dining Package

    1 shore excursion per port

    Internet package

    Prepaid gratuities/service charges

    Bottle of wine

    20-photo package

    Chocolate covered strawberries

Cruise fare is in addition to package price. This limited-time offer is per person and available on most 2015 sailings. Offer is applicable to 7-day cruises visiting 3 ports. Different all-inclusive pricing is available for other cruises (longer cruises/ more ports).

  12. We are booked on the Getaway 6/28 sailing. I have never booked GTY cabins in the past, and because I paid for several family members to go I booked my suite, and then 3 balcony cabins GTY. Now I picked my suite, but I just find it odd that the Balcony cabins i've booked GTY still haven't been assigned cabins now that we are almost a week away from sailings. Every thing I've read in the past on here 99.9% get their staterooms assigned around 3-6 weeks from sailing or close to when final payment is made. Whats the latest anyone has received their cabin assignments? I want to print of the edocs but don't want to have to redo them once the cabins are assigned.

  13. Personally, before I sailed on the Allure, I thought that the reservations were a dumb thing. After taking that cruise, I realized that it was a very smart idea, and one that might be emulated by other cruise lines to alleviate some of the bottlenecks that we see. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to attend a show on Carnival, only to be met by a mob of people trying to get in and ultimately leaving when I couldn't find a seat.

Reservations mean that you know that you'll have a guaranteed seat. It also means that there will be more crowd control since there will be multiple performances throughout the week and only those with reservations will be in attendance.

The reservations system is just one more way why sailing on the Allure and Oasis feel much less crowded than on any ship in the Carnival fleet, and why sometimes you walk around these ships feeling as if you have the place all to yourself. They are truly engineering and innovation marvels and nobody (specially those who've never sailed on them and make uneducated comments) can take that away from them.

Your spot on with your observations in regards to the reservation system. Like I mentioned earlier if one is uncomfortable with having to make a reservation for a show on Breakaway, Epic, Getaway, Allure, or Oasis then they just simply show up at the theater like normal and get a seat first come first serve after the people with reservations have been let in.

  14. You are correct, I was unsure about what I remembered about the agreement. While other cruise lines may be able to buy space, we know that won't happen. Terrible deal for Tortola, hope the arrangement is not long. It was a gem stop for us it was very refreshing. Disappointing that it worked out that way.

Something I haven't thought of is, CCL is adamant about not buying berthing space from NCL and DCL (in a way I don't blame them), but its sort of hypocritical of CCL. They don't have their own private island, most ships use HAL's Half Moon Cay (Carnival Corp). If space at HMC is starting to get limited why not use Princess' private island (another Carnival Corp brand)? The part I find hypocritical is they won't buy betting space from NCL and DCL for Tortola, but instead of using Princess' private island, they have bought berthing space from RCI to use CocoCay (aka Little Stirrup Cay)...kind of a head scratcher there!

  15. NCL has this on there NCL iConcierge App. The app is free to download and many of the features are free. However if you want to talk and text on the app, it cost $7.95 for the week and you get a number through the app that allows you to talk and text other cruisers. For those who want an idea of whats on the app and how it works just click the link. http://www.ncl.com/downloads/iconcierge

    http://www.ncl.com/sites/default/files/iCONCIERGE_05132014.pdf

Right now its only on the Breakaway, Epic, Getaway, and Pearl but is being rolled out fleet wide this year.
