  1. My realistic views are with Downunder55. Below is the chart for the current Silver Moon position off of the coast of Morocco. Progress is being made and the ship is heading in the right direction. Yes, I worry about the negative-twisted "Bean Counters" within Silversea, but there's lots of money to be made from this Mumbai-scheduled sailing that is sold-out for all of the top-end suites, etc., plus much added cash to be banked from the pre-cruise and mid-voyage special excursions, etc. That positive yield from the Feb. 11-29 schedule helps cover much of the added fuel costs for cranking the sailing speed up above the 17 knot rate in order to make the planned timing schedule work. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio From www.cruisemapper.com, here is the current Silver Moon position off of the coast of northern Africa.:
  2. The Silver Moon, circled below in Red has passed Gibraltar and is now in the Atlantic heading south towards Cape Town. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  3. From the London/UK Sunday Times today, they had this headline: “The city that’s at its most wonderful — and coat-free — in winter" with this sub-headline: "Cheap bars, alfresco food, less tourists and longer hours of daylight make Lisbon shine even brighter in the cold months.” Here are some of the highlights written by Jane Mulkerrins: “With its mild climate and still relatively low cost of living, it’s not hard to see why up to 20,000 digital nomads from the US, UK, Brazil and other countries have decamped to Portugal’s capital in the past four years, encouraged by generous visa schemes. Alfama, the picturesque area below Sao Jorge Castle and one of the oldest neighbourhoods, is one area that has boomed in response.” A nice variety of options, tips, etc., are outlined in this profile. 4. Appreciate much this interesting chart as to the "flows" around Africa and follow-up from our Australia friend. As to Mr. Levin saying "Cruise no longer on website. I also couldn't find any mention of a cruise leaving from Colombo; Singapore embarkation is first cruise. Maybe I can't figure out the Silversea website.", YES, the Silversea website is acting "funky" now as to this Feb. 11-29 Silver Moon cruise. On the My Silversea connection, all of our day-by-day bookings for tours, dining, etc., are still all there, but it will not allow booking any new excursions. New bookings on this cruise are now allowed as it is all booked up and/or wait-listed for all cabins. Overall, the SS website is acting . . . Strange? But, maybe, hopefully, pure speculation, Silversea is now trying to figure out its plan for fine-tuning this cruise to Singapore, its starting date/location, etc. Need some Good News? As the Silver Moon is now approaching Gibraltar and its speed is up to 18 knots. My guess is that the Silver Moon could still reach India in the Feb. 11-14 time range. If and If?? THANKS! Enjoy! 5. Appreciate this great comment and follow-up from our neighbor in Maryland. Yes, solo deals are an important attraction for many. In general with many cruise lines, isn't Silversea a little better than average at times with such solo offerings? Many cruise lines have a solo cost at 200%. I have seen times when Silversea only adds 25%. Right or wrong? From the New York Times Travel Section this weekend, they have this headline: “What Travelers Can Expect in 2024” with these highlights for one trend: “Luxury and Wellness: Is the Boom Real?” This includes for the NYT citing: "After the travel frenzy of 2023, all signs point to increasing interest in far-flung destinations, villa rentals, private jet bookings and personal pilgrimages in 2024. 'The lust for luxury is real,' said Jack Ezon, the founder of a high-end travel agency. But, he added, mindfulness is poised to replace heedless indulgence. 'Consumers today are focused on sustainability, investment value and craftsmanship when considering a luxury purchase,' he said. Compared to 2019, 2023 bookings were up 64 percent, and demand remains strong heading into the new year. This year, travelers are expected to choose faraway places and board small ships, according to Virtuoso, the consortium of luxury travel agencies." This story also noted and detailed for these added potentials: "Biometrics: Will They Replace My Passport?", Airline Prices: Will They Finally Drop? and "Destinations: What’s Hot This Year?" As to this last trend, they shared: "London, Rome, Tokyo, Cancún and Las Vegas, some of the most visited destinations in 2023, are still among the top places travelers are searching to go to this year. Beach destinations like the Cayman Islands and French Polynesia are also trending destinations for 2024." With the mention of French Polynesia, it brings back great memories from our visit there right before Covid started in early March 2020 to shut everything down. 6. From the London/UK Daily Mail this weekend, they had this headline: “Your guide to a year in Greece: Time your trip to get the best of the country's historic sites - without battling the crowds” with these highlights writer Angela Epstein: “Avoiding the crowds while seeing the great sites of Greece isn’t easy. Last summer, police were even deployed at the Acropolis in Athens to help manage more than 17,000 visitors each day. Yet, with its countless festivals, natural beauty and an array of historical monuments, you do not have to limit visits at peak periods." There are a variety of tips and ideas throughout the year as to where to go in Greece to avoid crowds and congestion. For Athens, March was a highlighted month with these specifics suggested: "This is a great time to see the Greek capital. On March 25, patriotic Athenians commemorate the Greek War of Independence with a grand military parade — quite a spectacle. Hike Mount Lycabettus to enjoy the blossom." June was suggested for "charming Corinth" including this highlight: "Landmarks include Acrocorinth, ancient Corinth’s soaring acropolis." 7. Does this explain a little as to what is happening with the stock market, including for the cruise stocks? From the New York Times late yesterday, they had this headline: “Stocks Climb to Record, Lifted by Big Tech and Rate Cut Hopes" with this sub-headline: "The S&P 500 crossed above its January 2022 peak after weeks of wavering. Investors have been buying stocks after homing in on signals that the Fed’s campaign of raising interest rates is over.” Here are some of the analysis/reporting highlights: “The stock market broke through to new heights on Friday, with the S&P 500 index finally hitting a record after weeks of bumping up against its previous peak. The index rose 1.2 percent to close above the high that was set in January 2022. The record followed a staggering rally in the final months of 2023, as investors seized on signs of slowing inflation and signals from the Federal Reserve that it could begin to lift the brakes off the economy by cutting interest rates.” Here is an interesting chart with this NYT story reflecting historic trends for the S&P 500 over the past four decades: Full story at: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/19/business/stock-market-record.html THANKS! 8. From the Wall Street Journal late this afternoon, below are the charts for this past week's for the three major cruise lines. Kind of a strange and different week? For Royal Caribbean, things from Tuesday morning were generally up in a fairly positive manner. Same, kind of, maybe for the other two major companies. But, there were a few uniques "twist" and "shakes" as the week progressed, especially on Thursday morning. Why? Not sure. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Venice: Loving It & Why??!! 9. On another CC SS thread, there was an excellent comment and follow-up from our Florida/FDNY friend as to how sea conditions and weather can seriously impact these potential sailing times. Storms and rough seas can affect speeds, routes, etc. Great point of importance!! Here's another factor that might play into the challenges for Silversea: There were probably a certain number scheduled on the Feb. 11-29 sailing who have been bumped off of the previous sailing from the Middle East to Mumbai. Will those earlier, planned passengers scrub totally or be happy to adjust for flying into Mumbai to join the Silver Moon there? From the Washington Post this morning, they had this headline: “Houthis target U.S.-owned tanker” with these highlights: “Iranian-backed Houthi militants targeted a tanker in the third such attack on commercial shipping in three days, U.S. Central Command said, as President Biden acknowledged that U.S. strikes have not deterred the Yemen-based group.” Also for Silversea, they have ships later this winter and spring that are scheduled to sail west-bound from Asia up the Suez Canal and to the Med. When does Silversea start to change those schedules and sailing plans? The continued Houthis attacks should make clear that this danger-zone near Yemen is not being resolved ant time soon. And, it might ramp up, UP to an even worst danger situation. Right or wrong? Any other issues and questions facing the bosses at Silversea? In addition to the expected fuel consumption, re-fueling point along the western Africa coast, food/staff re-supply, etc.?? 11. YES!, agree as to these being "interesting times". Great point/questions as to the various mid voyage options that, I assume, are fairly profitable for Silversea. Plus, the different pre-cruise tours that Silversea has booked for the Golden Triangle. Agree that the Silver Moon Captain has been told a date/time for arriving in Cape Town. BUT, will the top bosses at Silversea and Royal Caribbean order adjustments as they consider the various "costs" financially and with "customer relations"?? THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  12. Still awaiting some "word" from the secretive Silversea as to their exact plans/promises for Mumbai, etc. As of this morning, per www.cruisemapper.com, the Silver Moon is now about half way between Malta and Gibraltar. This website says this ship is traveling at a 17 knots speed and is still on their schedule to arrive in Cape Town at 10 am on Feb. 2. Good enough to make Mumbai by Feb. 11? Agree with our friend above as to the need to "speed up"!! Our UK friend mancunian is correct to be concerned about the "bean-counters" at Silversea and Royal Caribbean being "penny-wise and pound-foolish" by trying to save money with current fuel consumption, but ultimately costing them much more with adjustments/anger from/for customers on the scheduled Feb. 11-29 cruise to Singapore. So far, it has been in the famed words of Simon & Garfunkel with their song, "Sounds of Silence", as to meaningful communications from Silversea. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  13. Appreciate this kind follow-up from our Philadelphia-area "neighbor". 14. YES!! Great, important point and question from our Florida friend who is legally very savvy. I am sure part of the delay by Silversea is that ALL of the many "bean-counters" and "legal-eagles" within Silversea and Royal Caribbean must check all of these various "angles" to figure out what works best and causes the least bottom-line damages for both passengers and the company. It is all very complex and challenging. Keep it coming as the various factors involved while those of us on this scheduled Feb. 11 sailing from Mumbai to Singapore await to hear the specifics from the Silversea officials in change who know for certain as to "THE PLAN". THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  15. Here is another interesting travel trend spotlighted that might fit with Silversea and their future offerings. From the Washington Post and MSN News yesterday, they had this headline: “Adventure travel is a growth industry thanks to women over 40” with these highlights: “Women comprise 57 percent of travelers who book through global travel companies, according to the Adventure Travel Trade Association. When the travel company is women-led, such as Wild Women Expeditions (WWE), Adventure Women or Sisters Traveling Solo, that number jumps to 64 percent. Estimated to be worth $2 trillion by 2032, the global adventure tourism industry is expanding rapidly, and women are a big part of that growth. They are not afraid to travel alone or to great heights.” Here is more background cited: "Older women, defined as over 65, represent the greatest recent increase in solo travel, going from 4 percent in 2019 to 18 percent in 2022. 'During the pandemic there was so much loss; now there’s this underlying current of ‘Go do things now,’' says Kristi Marsh, marketing director of Adventure Women, a company founded in 1982 to help women explore the outdoors." Silversea is well positioned to ride this "wave" of added interest for adventure-related offerings. Right? 16. As to future trends affecting the cruise lines and travelers, from the Wall Street Journal late yesterday, they had this headline: “These Travelers Have a Secret: They Love Cheap Cruises on Old Ships" with this sub-headline: "Passengers find better deals and blissfully smaller crowds far from the world’s largest cruise ships.” Here are some of their reporting highlights: “Picking an older, smaller cruise might make for less fancy travel, but it comes with obvious advantages. Lower demand for the aged vessels in cruise lines’ fleets can prompt some big-deal savings. Some of these ships sail more exotic itineraries, and passengers enjoy greater attention from crew members without feeling so crowded. A cruise ship can start to show its age at around 15 years.” Silversea has BOTH . . . newer ships and older ones. How do they adjust for the future? Here is more from this fascinating WSJ reporting: "Keeping older ships in a fleet enables cruise lines to serve a wider array of destinations. Newer megaships can be too big to dock in certain harbors, including Tahiti. 'We intentionally place our smaller ships in more exotic destinations with longer, port-intensive itineraries that offer a more immersive experience that our guests love,' says David Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line." Personally, we love more exotic destination that offer port-intensive itineraries. Silversea offers many great options fitting those categories. 17. Super appreciate the excellent sail-away picture and follow-up from savvy UK travel expert Fletcher. Hopefully for us, the Silver Moon will connect with our food for our 18-day cruise to Singapore in Mumbai. Maybe, if and if, depending cruising speeds that will be the routing used by the Captain of the Silver Moon. Cute comment as to our ship needing to take a "LONG DRINK" in Cape Town. Yes, lots of fuel will be needed to be loaded in Cape Town for that long journey across the Indian Ocean. From www.cruisemapper.com below (circled in red) is a visual capture for the current position in the Med for the Silver Moon as it sails west-bound: And, here is the current, colorful view in Malta with the Silver Moon having departed this am. 18. Great updating and visuals from our friend down under in Australia. Yes, super agree as to your wise insight of "Wouldn't like to be a SS logistics planner at the moment .... they would be stressed to the max." Am still of the view that after Cape Town, the Silver Moon will be heading to Mumbai. The timing for WHEN this ship arrives in India is still a major, serious question. With Mumbai, versus starting in Sri Lanka, it will be easier to arrange hotels and flights for those hundreds of paid-up Silver Moon passengers who might need to re-arrange schedules. Just speculating and guessing?? Just completed yesterday doing our on-line India Visa "process" last night. That's a whole another amazing journey of a "roller-coast" ride to detail later. THANKS! 19. Appreciate this update from Marc. I just saw and posted on the earlier thread that on the www.cruisemapper.com website that the Silver Moon is still, now in Malta. They have, however, listed that this ship's next destination is Cape Town and due there February 2 at 10 am. Progress? Here is the graphic from this website: Tonight's key question: From my earlier checking, to do Cape Town to Mumbai, it means sailing 4599 nautical miles. That would require 10 days 16 hours to accomplish at 18 knots speed as per sea-distances.org. How will that work out for reaching Mumbai on February 11 or 12? Can they speed up the schedule for arriving in Cape Town? Or, sail at a higher speed than 18 knots? THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  20. Comparing Aussie versus U.S. tort law is much, much beyond my mental and/or legal skill levels. But, more important, I just saw on the www.cruisemapper.com website that the Silver Moon is still, now in Malta. Here is the graphic from this website: Tonight's key question: From my earlier checking, to do Cape Town to Mumbai, it means sailing 4599 nautical miles. 21. Agree 100% with the wisdom by Downunder55. What did the Silver Moon cost to build and equip? $400-500 million? More? Less? No Royal Caribbean CFO would allow that kind of risk to happen for one of their ships. And, there would still be a significant number crew members on the ship. No passengers, but these types of human risks would hard to image. Love to read the back-up info that cruise ships without passengers would be OK under these current, war-like conditions. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  22. Appreciate this great link. Below is a quick screen shot to share with others who do not want to take the time to click on this site. Will check back as to how soon the Silver Moon will be departing and heading westbound to the Atlantic Ocean. Agree with fdnycruiser as to it being sad that passengers will not be along to enjoy this unique "adventure" to Africa and India. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  23. Appreciate this follow-up and news link. From that story, the most important part for me is: "Silversea writes in a statement to The Maritime Executive. 'The voyage between Mumbai and Singapore, scheduled between Feb 11 and Feb 29, is currently scheduled to proceed as planned.' " Right now on www.cruisemapper.com, it does not show the current position of the Silver Moon on this reliable website. Maybe Silversea has not yet posted as to their next port, arrival time, etc. Assume "our ship" is in Malta preparing to sail west to circumnavigate Africa. Will keep monitoring to check for more updates and details. Liked also the information provided by southend from the UK. Keep up the great sharing. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  24. Appreciate this added follow-up from Sue in London. Sorry about the confusion as to refund versus also getting the added 20% 2024 discount. All is very frustrating and confusing. Hopefully the various SS offices can clarify and provide the maximum benefit to its customers. YES to highplanesdrivters in having our "FINGERS CROSSED" in hoping that the Feb. 11 sailing will happen as currently scheduled and promised. Having SS officials quoted in print helps a little. BUT, as happens with politicians, "things can change". What is said, claimed and/or hope for on one day, can be changed the next day or week. Per my calculations and estimates, Feb. 11 in Mumbai is still possible, if and if. THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
  25. Great to hear from wyocruiser that Silversea appears to be acting reasonable for doing such reimbursements as for the costs of the Saudi Visa, etc. As to the bigger questions for the circumnavigation of Africa and when the ship arrives in Asia, Silversea must figure out its "logistics" for getting down to Cape Town and then going to India or Sri Lanka. On another thread some have suggested it would be more reasonable to move the start of this Mumbai-Singapore cruise to a boarding in Columbo, Sri Lanka, on Feb. 16. Maybe? Maybe not? From the website sea-distances.org, the Cape Town to Mumbai journey is 4599 nautical miles, requiring 10 days 16 hours if using a sailing speed of 18 knots per hour. By contrast, at the same speed, going to the capital of Sri Lanka is 4362 nautical miles, taking 10 days 2 hours. Going to Columbo would save 16 hours, but would add huge additional costs to Silversea as roughly 600 passengers would need to spend (and be reimbursed) thousands of more dollars for flights, hotels, etc., in getting from Mumbai down to Sri Lanka, etc. For the Silver Moon, 17 knots is the normal "service speed" with 21 knots as its highest speed. I figured as using 18 knots speed for my estimates/calculations. A higher ship speed burns more fuel, but it could be very much worth it in order to lessen the additional costs in shifting the Mumbai sail-away time too much from Feb. 12. To complete my "speculations", from Malta assuming a midnight departure later today: it is Malta to Gibraltar, 984 nautical miles, 2 days 7 hour. Gibraltar to Cape Town, 5094 nautical miles, 11 days 19 hours Cape Town to Mumbai, 4599 nautical miles, 10 days 16 hours. That would total to Mumbai about 11k nautical miles, and require around 25 days using the 18 knots estimate. Maybe, if and if, realistic to board on Feb. 11? It all depends on sailing speed, where and how many re-fueling stops, etc. What am I missing and/or failing to consider? Look forward to learning more, but agree that it might not be till Friday that Silversea is able to finalize all of these calculations and re-supply details. THANKS! Enjoy!
