  1. On January crossings, there's often a couple of days where the wind is so strong that you are not allowed outside for a least part of the day.

Recommend taking a good wind / waterproof jacket and a secure hat for mid-voyage jaunts around the deck. Outside games are subject to being moved inside (quoits etc) when weather is too inclement.

We're normally too busy to be sitting around on balconies, so can't really comment there.

Definitely recommend taking the trip !

  2. Great review. Nice style of writing.....

Pity you are 'scarred' by early life experiences of the Tower ballroom..... We always loiter for a little while in the Queens Room to do our learned dance of the day before making our excuses. I find that the good dancers, like an expert forklift truck driver, can steer effortlessly around any hazards in the way (aka: me and hubby). Only the very few pretentious 'wannabes' fail to navigate around us, tutting, in my mind, at their own lack of talent!

  3. We live on the East side of the Pond and prefer to sail westbound despite the need to then fly home overnight. That bit is NEVER nice, but sailing into NY beats sailing into a grey, grim Southampton any day.

Losing an hour when travelling eastbound is weird - life is too short to 'give' an hour away whilst on holiday and I think that it feels like you lose more - especially when its 'stolen' during waking hours :) We prefer late dining, and this was particularly welcome on the eastbound crossing where even the 8.30 sitting seemed relatively early.

As for shopping - a very favourable exchange rate (??!) would be the only thing that might get me on a big shopping trip in NY. I live in London and really don't think that NY offers that much to go mad about that a savvy UK shopper couldn't get hold of..... "shipping" works both ways !! We've met loads of Brits heading to / in NY to shop who haven't even been to London. To me, that's weird.

A back to back trip solves any dilemma of jetlag and return trips - but requires the time that we just don't have. I can forgive the 'theft' of time on the eastbound return leg as I have already reaped the benefits of the extra hours on the way out!

It never gets too busy. I love it, and always subscribe whilst on board.

  5. I think that a lot do have long dresses - but not everyone - there are definitely some lovely cocktail dresses and 'pant' suits (as those across the pond call them).

Anything with sparkles - be it clothing or accessory - is a good starting point.

The best finishing touch is a smile - transforms any outfit !

  6. I attended a small focus group in London at the offices of a market research company last summer. There were about 8 of us I think, with varied histories of sailing with Cunard - from 1 voyage to many.

It was about the refit of QM2....

Have you been invited to something?

  7. You can get orange juice, lemonade, cranberry juice and iced tea free from the buffet all day so unless you want different don't really think the drinks package is worth the money.

These are not as good as the fruit juices in the soft drinks package... Note: the lemonade in the buffet is 'traditional' rather than clear and fizzy....

If you are on a multi-segment trip, you need to renew your drinks package and get a new 'spot' which will be a different colour.

  8. You don't state your issue re. dining times..... but the majority of passengers on board all 3 Cunarders dine formally on either an early or late sitting and get along quite nicely.

Don't forget that there is also the buffet option...

As per cabin allocation, it can part of the fun of the build up to see where your cabin is in relation to other amenities - but try not to over stress about your delayed knowledge. Some people are assigned a cabin and then find out close to embarkation that they are somewhere else having been upgraded. Try to relax knowing that your booking has been confirmed and that you will soon be going on a fantastic trip!
