  1. I'm glad you are OK Sid, wasn't sure exactly where you are.  They had a "shelter in place" in place for a while and don't seem to know where the shooter is.  The shooting occurred in a doctor's office just a block away from my son's condo, an office where my son has gone a couple times for urgent care, so it has seemed especially scary to me.

Fortunately he is fine, nowhere near Atlanta, as he happens to be "working from home" while he is in Spain for a month.  I knew he was in Spain but I was so alarmed when I saw the address so close to him that I texted him right away to be sure.

  2. People are more than what they write on the internet, or what box they check on the ballot when they vote, or what town or family they come from.  I've found something likeable about almost every person I've ever met or worked with.

And if you both gotta be there, it's easier if we just get along.

I want to know if there’s a lot of out of work family doctors. I ran a fireworks delivery to a downtown OKC hotel today and a guy I went to HS was working valet. He’s a licensed… and as far as I knew practicing family physician, so I wondered what was going on.

OK, now I see your question.  Yes, to the point made by @onlyano.  Lots of docs burned out by the way medicine is practiced now - money and corporations rule, and physicians actually caring for the patient is discouraged.

About one-third of physicians are 55 and older so many are simply retiring early or moving to a different field.  But delivering fireworks?  In April?  That sounds unusual to me.

Me? I've tried another field, and missed seeing patients, love being a family doctor, so I went back to clinical medicine.  Just taking time out now for dealing with the proverbial "illness in the family."

Random Tribe question: is anyone here a doctor? I have a non-medical question regarding the field. TIA!

I'm still here but only occasionally lurking.  I have been so swamped by the board exams (happened last week and they were horrible as expected but at least over with) and tending to my husband since his "mini-stroke, that, well, it has been a challenge.

But I'm coming up for air, catching up, and glad to think about something else like, how can I help you?  I'm happy to answer any question if I can!

  5. This sounds like fun, I like the idea, but I am not good at making long range plans and commitments, especially when we are thinking of moving back east.  Now if this was sailing in 3 weeks I'd do it!

Is this the sort of cruise I could book just two weeks before sailing?

If anyone would like to read a heart-warming story, check out the Royal Caribbean board, “Oasis of the Seas Live - We’ve been Saved by the Bell” thread, Page 111, Post 2764. I’m not posting a link so as not to be disrespectful.

Thank you for sharing this. It was a lovely way to honor Sue and support Marty.

Sure caused tears for me, and it's an appropriate ceremony for someone who has many years of loving being out on the water.

My dad's ashes were scattered on the St. John's River in Florida.  He'd spent 30 years in the US Coast Guard so a USCG cutter came up the river from Jacksonville to near my parents' home so we could go out on the river aboard the cutter from there.

May 27th. I am NOT looking forward to that. Worst thing is that it looks more and more likely that I might have to leave the kids there with the crazy in-laws if my living situation doesn't get sorted. Ironic. I fought so hard and have worked 2 or 2 jobs to raise them without any help from those loonies and now I'm losing them anyway. Ugh.

I'm sorry that things have been so tough for you, as you have worked so hard.  As others have posted, don't give up!

Is there any way I could help you out?  I live only an hour away - we're practically neighbors - depending on the border crossings of course.

  8. I've had those same reservations about DNA testing - you just never know what surprises may turn up.  There are a few uncommon biological explanations for how "non-paternity" can occur at random thanks to some oddities of Mother Nature, but unless there are compelling medical reasons (you need to find an organ donor for your transplant or else you will die), maybe better not to mess with it.

Thanks for the good wishes.  I'm thinking maybe a short "test trip" to North Carolina for MerleFest next month would be fun for me (travel at long last) and probably manageable for him.  He doesn't need much direct care but does need "watching" over very basic finances.  He thinks he is fine of course.

South Africa sounds very intriguing.  I wanna go there!  My son has visited several times and always texts really cool clips of his visits to game preserves.

  9. Hi y'all!  I received a notice of a post here in The Tribe, which reminded me that Hey, I haven't posted in ages.  It's been crazy since my husband has been sick and I have had to take over a lot of household things that he was managing while I was at work.  Well, let's just say that there have been many "opportunities for improvement" in our finances because he wasn't all that good at it.

It's a good think I haven't been working (or at least not employed) since his stroke.  And there's been no time to even think about a cruise, even though I know that there are two of then that I have to sign up for an use up credits by the end of the year.

Missed you all and I have some back reading to do.

During my teen years, my mother spent much of here time in bed due to medications. Back then it was pills for mental health (depression), therapy was considered for crazies.

After living thru that, I find myself being very aware of times when I get depressed. My daily walks help clear my head on a regular basis.

And your walks result in so many wonderful photos too!

  11. @Greenpea2 I'm sorry it's been so difficult for you.  I can feel for you about those absences - those who are gone and those who just couldn't make the trip.

I can't remember if I posted here about my "newly discovered nephew," son of my brother who died early in the Covid era.  Dustin visited us when we were back east in October, first time I'd seen him since he was a toddler.  We had a wonderful  time and it turns out he lives only an hour away from our NC place (can we move back soon?).  He and family couldn't make it to Atlanta for Christmas but we're aiming to get-together in North Carolina for MerleFest in April.

Maybe it can be like that old saying "When one door closes, another one opens."  We can all hope so.

  12. Hey, y'all.  Greetings from HOTlanta!  Which is definitely NOT HOT.  We're visiting our son here and all the family from all over the country has gathered here for Christmas.

We got out of Seattle before the runways were closed but the storm has followed us all the way back east.

I'll have to read and catch up on the goings-on here at Ay-Tee-Ell.  It's been crazy since my husband had the stroke in October but I think he is sort of on the mend.  Enough for a Christmas trip anyway.

I passed my 1st ever Covid test so full speed ahead to the operating room so recovery can begin and I can get back to my sweetie in Arizona and book a cruise!

This is Lily, she is one of my mom's 3 feral rescues.  She has started spending a lot of time in my lap.  She is almost 20 lbs.  It is very comforting.  Took this while she was in my lap.

Sending prayers for a smooth course tomorrow and during your recovery.

Lily looks very sweet and docile, especially for a feral rescue.

Prayers being sent your way. 💓🙏💓

I would appreciate reciprocal prayers as well. Had a biopsy on my breast today. Three to five business days for results. The waiting is WAY worse than the procedure.

Prayers sent up.  As Tom Petty said, "The waiting is the hardest part."

Well fellow TRIBE members today was a long medical day.

Had my Presurgical appts.  I met with at least 5 different people then had more blood taken.  I was drained when we left but now one more hurdle, a COVID test Saturday morning, my first one since all this began then surgery Monday morning.

This time next week I will be home miserable but on the road to recovery!

Since COVID has changed so many things in our society it is amazing the things one must do before a major surgical procedure.  Also, no more family waiting room during surgery, drop the patient off, go home and someone will call you to keep you up to speed.  Since it is a traffic nightmare driving into and out of Boston I've requested no visitors, let me rest and work on getting in and out of bed.

Prayers would be appreciated.  This is the longest time Gary & I have been apart in 24 years!

You're added to my prayer list and have all my best wishes for a fast and full recovery.

Just remember that those "young and foolish activities" were worth it!

I will have about a 7 hour flight home so I am anticipating having to wait 6-8 weeks post surgery before I am allowed to fly for safety reasons.

With the way the weather has been here in Massachusetts this week, rainy, damp and now turning cold and the discomfort I have been in, like never before, I am READY to get this new knee for sure!

Exactly!  My surgery was in November here in the Pacific Northwest and the 4 walls + dreary outdoors got to me, had to head for some sun.  We joined the roll call group and just really enjoyed the Grand Princess and skipped hauling around Mexican ports for that trip.

And we had only a "short" flight of 2 hours to San Francisco, much easier than 6 - 7 hours.

  17. "Watch out for people who are always bragging about who they are.  A lion will never have to tell you that it's a lion."

For now I have no cruises planned.  I had to cancel the one scheduled to sail tomorrow, and now I've had to cancel the one sailing next month.  DH seems OK after the mini-stroke but I don't care to risk medical adventures on the high seas.  It's too soon and all the testing isn't finished yet.

We'll book something later when things are more settled.

@Hogladyrider we went on a Mexican Riviera cruise about 4 weeks after my knee replacement, and it was perfect.  Even though we didn't get off the ship until the last port, having the dining room, restaurants and entertainment steps away was "just what the doctor ordered."  Plus someone else cleaned the room every day for us - bonus!  We booked that cruise just 10 - 14 days in advance, which worked out fine for us.

  18. @maluhia87 It's good that the rapid heart beat has gotten back to normal, but perplexing when you still don't know what caused it.

We're going through a similar situation since my husband's "mini-stroke" last week while we were back east since his episode started with tachycardia while he was hiking.  He's getting follow-up testing here at home - had  an echocardiogram a few days days ago and now wearing a ZIO patch for 2 weeks to monitor his heart to see if they can figure out the problem.

I hope you are feeling better now, and that you can work with your primary care doctor to get some answers!

  19. I hate the red-eye but if you don't live close to the airport then the alternative - cockle-doodle-doo flight at oh-dark-thirty - is nearly as bad.  Alternative #3 (I always live 100 miles from the airport, requiring transit of at least 2 rush hours so it is at least 3 hours+) is to go to the airport The Night Before.  I don't like that either.

Now for a cruise, that is different planning.  The port is usually some nice tourist place where I want to spend an extra day or two anyway, and the airport usually has many flights each day, not just red-eye vs crack-of-dawn.

Like the skiing or other adventures of being young and foolish, travel is still worth it!

@sid_9169...you ain't kidding getting old isn't for sissies.

I turned 70 this year.  Right now sitting at Phoenix airport to take a rest eye to Boston for knee replacement surgery the first part of November.  Not how I wanted to spend my winter but it's the price I pay for my youthful ways.

The price we pay for being young and foolish - but it was worth it!

In my youth I was skiing and well, I was young & foolish, so I injured my left knee.  Recovered quick.

Then, 5 years ago I couldn't walk any more so the bad knee had to be replaced.  The right knee is the same age, but it's fine,  wasn't injured.  Hope I keep it that way.

I hope your surgery goes well!

  21. "Better" would be good but "the same" is OK for now if you need a little more time for the antibiotics to work.

Sid, when/if you are feeling down please note how our Tribe cares about you, and we are here because you started this thread!  Keep us posted on your progress, we worry about you.

  22. @#55worktoplayis exactly on the money - not a minute too soon with the start on antibiotics, as that photo looks bad and very painful.  I too would expect prompt improvement or else you need to be re-examined to see why you aren't better.  And if at any time you are getting worse, it would also be prudent be seen again.

Unless someone has asked me, I prefer not to begiving out advice, but it seems that if any time you are saying to yourself "Maybe tonight would be a good night not to drink" then I would applaud your effort.

I am really hoping you will feel better very soon.
