  1. I've already started the latest book and I'm sure I'll finish before leaving for my cruise in 18 days. I'll need to find something else to read on the plane I guess. :p

Yeah, I'm almost done, too. :/ 5 years of waiting for 3 days of reading ROFL

  2. Oh - no - release date in Germany is July 21... to late for my cruise.

And I think, it is too complicated to start in english with this book - I have all others in german (and I would like to have it in real paper in by bookshelf).

But I have a kindle full of books and I want to read a few (in the time "before" kindle" I think I was the only person leaving a cruise with lighter suitcases - I finished one or two books every day and left them at the ships library - a total of 20 books during a 13 day cruise (and it was not a TA - we did a lot of excursions too). We arrived with car at the cruise port, so I had no limitation :D

For me the kindle was the best new thing for years!

Hi, my name is Mary, and I'm a book hoarder. There is no WAY I'd leave books behind. I just couldn't do it! LOL I admire you and your ability to let them go. :D

  3. LOL! I have a nook with a light and LOVE it!! I'm going to load it with tons of books. I think I should read Written In My Own Heart's Blood before the cruise. If I don't, I'll miss a lot of Alaska stuck inside the book.

  4. I tend to believe that *most* parents care about the behavior of their children (I know ALL of my friends do). I believe that *most* parents want their kids to grow up to be respectful, happy, productive members of society. We work very hard to train our girls. That said, we also try to give our girls the opportunity to succeed. We don't take them places and set them up for failure. For instance, we've had a HUGE week this week and our 3 year old is completely out of sorts today. If we were on a ship we would most likely have an early dinner in the Lido and take her to our cabin to decompress from the day. There is no doubt in my mind that Faye could behave VERY well in any situation if we prepare her well for it. Will we go eat at a nice restaurant tonight? Depends on how her afternoon nap goes ;)

  5. I'm not sure if you mean the message is that families with kids are not welcome in the Pinnacle or on HAL as a whole, but family-friendly doesn't necessarily mean family-focused. Look at Disney--they have adults-only restaurants, coffee bars, and pools. And I don't think anyone would call Disney "family-unfriendly."

You can bring your children to the Pinnacle. But if they order off the standard adult menu, they are charged as adults. It would be unfriendly to adults if kids got the same meal for less, don't you think?

Pinnacle, not HAL. HAL is very welcoming, except in this one place I guess.

  6. I tried booking with Avis through Costco and it says "This is a non-participating location."

Maybe they reserved the max cars for that day? I have our confirmation, so I hope they honor it!

  7. Same applies to adults though. I've seen many adults on HAL cruises behave far worse than any kids I've seen. As I mentioned the adult behavior was so bad on our last HAL cruise we (and another couple we met who independently came to the same conclusion) stopped going on HAL excursions as we didn't want to be associated with the cruise ship.

As for the HSC comment - I'm not sure we all agree with the HSC applying equally to kids under 12 either! I didn't pay extra for our kids in the room at Embassy Suites last week.

Personally I think NCL has it right. 50% off for kids under 12 and free if they eat off the kids menu instead.

While HAL might "position" Pinnacle Grill as a high end - lets be real - it really isn't.

Totally agree. 5* restaurants, the handful I've been to, also require at a minimum a coat an tie for men and evening gowns for women. You don't see that in the Pinnacle either ;)

  8. Kind of strange they would charge kids under (say) 12 full price. I know we wouldn't pay full price for them to go there with us so HAL just don't get visits from families to the Pinnacle anymore. If they're trying to be a family friendly line that doesn't seem smart. Half price would be reasonable or free if they eat off the regular kids menu.

I guess it's their unofficial way of saying families with kids not welcome.

    Message heard loud and clear.

  9. Aw. That's so nice to read. Makes my day.

    Thanks.

    It's the truth. ;)

On the Vista and Signature ships at least there are a couple sets of connecting inside cabins on Deck 1. Not sure about the older ships.

    None on the Amsterdam :(

  10. Just off the phone with HAL Ship Services - the policy was changed in December 2013, and all children age 3 years and above pay full price in all specialty restaurants. No discounts.

As we had two evenings booked and had assumed kids were free we now need to rethink some of our plans onboard...

    Same here. Bummer.

  11. Aloha - with three kids (younger ages) how do you book your rooms? Will HAL let you have 5 in a room? My sister wants to do Alaska with her hubby and kids total of 5 people but do not want to have to split rooms. Grandparents can not make the trip to help out. Still trying to figure out the logistic. I am guessing they will have to get two and maybe can get adjoining door. Thanks

We are extremely blessed to be traveling with friends who we consider family, so our oldest who is turning 7 on this trip is in with RuthC for this cruise ;)

Otherwise, we were originally booked in joining cabins. As the girls get older we will probably move back to inside cabins (none of them are joining) and just be next door with one adult registered in each room.
