  1. Congratulations on the new house! You're not alone. We've cancelled two cruises. Our very first booking because we needed a new furnace after we bought the house (can't even remember what line or itinerary that was), then what was supposed to be our kids first cruise because DH lost his job. It gets easier, but there is sometimes something more important that comes up. For most of us traveling is a luxury and we don't have unlimited funds. We try to make it a priority - family vacations are REALLY important to us. But, stuff happens.

  2. I agree, but as I stated above, it is an irrelevant comparison when it comes to a cruise ship. Trust me, even a glutton can't get anything over on the cruise line.

The OP wasn't suggesting they were costing the cruise line money. Only that given a different location and having to pay for meals, they were basically getting the cruise part for free having paid for meals and at least breaking even.

  3. We're sailing on the Magic in 30 Days! Starting to get my last minute ducks in a row and one item on my list is requesting our table in the MDR a few days before we sail. From what I've read here and opinions of my family, our ultimate table would be a table for 5 near a window in the Southern Lights dinning room. Is this even possible or do you think such a request is a little too picky? Just want to hear from those of you who have specific preferences and how successful you were at getting them.

  4. While the jeans might be allowed, they are inappropriate for elegant night. Appropriate attire is something parents should enforce. He can always change immediately after the meal. Khakis don't cost much. They can be found at Target or Old Navy for about $20.

  5. So reading the Carnival out NYC says you have to wait a day but I have never had to with Celebrity is that because its out of NJ? I thought NCL was the first day too and that's our of NYC. What a stupid rule.

It has to do with state laws. NJ, although close, is a different state.

  6. I haven't cruised with babies, but traveled with my kids since they were infants. My youngest took his first road trip at 3 weeks and both flew before their first birthday. If the cruise/resort allows infants, it can work as long as the parents and baby are flexible. If the parents are the type to stick religiously to a set routine and the baby thus doesn't adapt to changes well, it won't be a pleasant experience. It's all what you make it.

  7. Thank you so very much! I hesitated to make the thread at all because I was afraid of negativity, but I am so glad I did!

I have had so much fun reading everyone's responses and I am even more certain that we have made he right decision for us. Reading what everyone loves about Cheers has made me even more excited about our upcoming cruise. (5 days to sailing!)

It's also been interesting to talk about various replies with my husband. It's fascinating to discuss the psychology of "all inclusive" vs. "pay as you go" with him.

I hope that I have encouraged some people to think about Cheers differently and to consider how it can be more about overall cruise enjoyment and not just a decision that you should make after consulting with your financial planner. ;-)

I have a friend who loves to eat sushi with me. We go to an awesome all you can eat place that also serves a la carte and at the end of the meal she adds up items until she's decided we've come out ahead. I thought about doing this when we decided to get Cheers! and then decided against it. It's my vacation. I want to relax, just enjoy and not worry about it. I'm sure we'll come close to even. And if we don't that extra cost will be well worth it for the enjoyment we'll get out of just ordering what we want without worrying about cost.

  8. We still have a month before our cruise, but everything is all set and I'd like to print boarding passes now. Our color printer is having issues so I thought I'd print at work, but we only have a black and white printer at work. Will that be an issue for the luggage tags? We do have FTTF and I plan on making sure the porters put orange tags on the luggage if that makes a difference.

  9. If the cruise is fully booked you won't be able to add another person to any room unless they are already booked in a different room and you're just moving people around. Fully booked is based on how many people on board (and based on the space in lifeboats) and has nothing to do with free beds. If the person you want to move is already booked on this cruise, you might have more luck with this by posting it on the roll-call for this cruise.

  10. My family just noticed that the Olympics will be starting the day we set sail. Anyone have any experience with sailing during the Olympics? Were events and opening ceremonies shown in various places around the ship? Just hoping they aren't glued to the tv the whole time. DS18 is really into this stuff. When he went to summer camp as a kid and there were no tvs , he'd beg the counselors to give him their newspapers when they were finished.

Edited to add that I just noticed that opening ceremonies are the night before so we can watch that at the hotel in Cape Canaveral. That's usually the only part I watch, so I'm happy about that. A good way to spend the pre-cruise evening.

  11. It might have been discussed but when Carnival promotes (as Mr Heald has stated) drinks up to $50 it is misleading !

Especially when NCL & Royal have no such restrictions on there drinks or limit the amount of beverages you may have daily!

    Again Shame on Carnival!

It's not misleading. The rules of Cheers are clearly stated on their website and have been discussed in many threads here. Their website with Cheers rules specifically states no floaters. If you were unaware, it was because you did not inform yourself before you purchased. It's not like it's bait and switch marketing.

You're free to just not purchase Cheers, or to sail NCL and Royal if you don't like Carnival's policies.

  12. We're renting a car at MCO and returning it at Cape Canaveral before our upcoming cruise, and then in reverse afterward. Are there tolls along the route? I though I had read something about tolls in FL being cashless and that we'd need a SunPass or something? Is this something that can be provided by the car rental company?

  13. We had cheers but found it very convenient to have the case of water (had pre-ordered before cheers was changed to include NA beverages.). My friend needed it to take her medication and it was great to be able to have it right there when we got up in the morning.

We also ordered two packages of water, even though the four of us over 21 will have Cheers. My 18 year old drinks water almost exclusively. And we thought it would be handy just to grab for going ashore rather than stopping at a bar or shop to get it first.

  14. Thanks

    I will look into that.

    It kinda sucks really

I finally talked my friend and his DW to take a cruise.

I advised him to purchases insurance.

Since then he had a kidney removed with cancer and his other kidney is not

fully doing the job. Dialyses might be in his near future,

Carnival does not offer as of now Dialyses at sea yet. So I'm afraid my friend might not

get to use that withheld deposit.

It's still a little early and everything might work out ok.

He was asking me about procedures

Usually I wouldn't have much sympathy for people who have to forfeit deposits on ES fares since they knew the rules gong in. But, this is an unexpected medical issue and I do feel for your friend. If it were me, I would call Carnival, speak to a supervisor if needed, and see if they can make an exception. After all he would sail if they had Dialysis at Sea. It's worth a try. All they can say is no.

  15. Seems like the more I read the more I get confused! :-)

Read somewhere that somebody includes their bottles of water in the Cheers count!

If you purchase Cheers, you can get 15 alcoholic drinks per day and unlimited non-alcoholic drinks (almost everything non-alcoholic including water). But, you have to go to a bar or coffee shop to get water. It won't be delivered to your room.

If you don't buy Cheers, you can buy bottled water for $3.99 per 12-pack and have it delivered to your room. If you don't buy Cheers, coffee, tea, tap water and lemonade are free during the day. And juice at breakfast are as well. All other beverages (including bottled water) must be paid for if you don't have Cheers.
