  1. We just returned from NYC and did the Irish Immigrants, which is on the 4th floor. This tour was 1 hr long. We saw an apt in decay, and then an apt decorated as it was when the Irish immigrants lived there. It's a long walk up to the 4th floor and there is no elevator, just FYI.

A few years ago we did the Hard Times tour which was 2 hrs long. It showed apts on the 2nd floor, one of Jewish immigrants and the other Italian immigrants.

This is really a worthwhile museum to visit with lots of history attached.

  2. The daily sheets are very helpful....thank you for posting them. We're leaving in 2 weeks.

I see that some days there are two different tours in the same time slot...do you have a choice of these? For the extra tours that you pay for, they are listed as "optional tour". But the following are listed in the same time slot:

    *Walking Tour: Arles

    *Van Gogh Theme Tour: Arles

    *Shore excursion: Steam Train

    *Shore excursion: Tain L'Hermitage

    *Walking tour: Lyon

    *Cooking workshop: Lyon

If you've been on this itinerary, please clarify for me if I'm reading this correctly. And I'd like to hear comments about which tours you chose and if you enjoyed your selection.

  3. We are travelling late Oct on BA from Newark to Heathrow, then to MRS. Flight leaves at 10:25pm...guess considered a red eye. Haven't flown BA in over 20 years.

Will they serve dinner this late? Will there be any breakfast before landing?

Just wondering what to expect. Hoping I can fit in a few hours/minutes of sleep, if possible.

Will our bags be checked all the way to MRS? We have a 4 hr layover and it will be much easier for us if we don't have to pick up our bags at LHR.

    Thanks for any advice!

  4. We usually do an ocean or river cruise to Europe in the fall. We like to plan our own pre and post stays, our own flights, and sometimes even do a back to back, like an ocean cruise, 3-4 days in a city like Paris, and then a river cruise. After flying over to Europe, we find we like to maximize our stay to the extent we are able.

That being said, this year’s planning went a little bit different for us. We decided to make our fall cruise as easy as possible. DH didn’t want to be gone long, so we got our flights thru Viking (a first for us) which also includes the transfers, and we’re going for just the 7 day cruise (Portraits of Southern France).

Now that we’re a few months away, I am getting a little anxious that the 7 days will be just too exhausting, especially not having time to get over the jet lag and arriving the day the cruise embarks.

If you’ve done a 7 day this way, please tell me about your experiences, both good and bad, so I’m prepared.

    Thanks to all!

  5. amd1234,

If you are tired and don't want to travel/walk alot, a visit to Shakespeare and Company bookstore is fun and it is very close to Notre Dame.

We had dinner at Le Petit Châtelet right next door or only a few doors away from the bookstore, and it is very good.

  6. We took the bus a few years ago. Got on the bus in front of the Prague train station and off the bus in front of the Nuremberg train station. It was clean, comfortable, and a perfectly easy way to travel.

  7. I found some nice cotton twill pants at Sierra Trading Post and ordered some for DH. One was dark olive and the other a medium brown (a little darker than khaki). They both fit great and are nice quality. The olive pair had cuffed bottom and the brown just hemmed. I liked them both but ordered 2 more pair of the dark olive which should arrive any day now. So I've decided no jeans for our Baltic cruise next month...and he is all set for clothes now!

  8. Two years ago in Paris we took a taxi from CDG to our hotel near the St. Michel metro stop, and it cost us 90E. There was alot of traffic. Last year we stayed at an airport hotel and took the bus in one day and the RER the next day, but that was without luggage. But yes, bus and RER are certainly the cheapest way. It looks like super shuttle is now in Paris....google it and see if that would work for you.

  9. Thank you for sharing this....the scarves look great for changing up the look. I'm going with a similar black, gray, and white theme, but instead of the jackets, I will use button, v-neck sweaters.

Wish I could wear a scarf, but I have a short, thickish neck, and they just don't look good on me. Maybe if I let them just hang down instead of tying them, kinda like Jon Voight, it would look okay!

  10. Thank you for the info. We decided to eliminate the 1 night pre stay and just fly in from Paris on the day of the cruise and go directly to the ship. I think this will work out better for us. For the 2 nights post cruise, we booked the Hilton at the airport at a very good rate. The ride into town is supposedly short and we can then sightsee wherever we want.

  11. Thank you CruiserBruce. This will be our first time in Copenhagen, so I think I have alot of research to do...about what to see and do...and then also where to stay. I was just hoping that with the constraint of my DH's limited walking that folks might point me to a hotel where there are some things to see and also some nice restaurants nearby. Thank you for the start!

  12. First trip to the Baltics....just starting research for our May trip.

We'll be arriving late afternoon, one day before our cruise. Should we stay at the airport, close to dock, or where?

Two nights post cruise, where is the best place for sightseeing/eating. DH has foot problems and does not walk long distances, so I like to be pretty central to sights or transportation.

    All suggestions appreciated!

  13. Thank you so much for your wonderful report! We will be on the Star on Feb. 27....our first time on Princess. A couple of questions for you. We usually cruise in the fall to Europe, where the weather is cool to cold. I'm trying to decide how to pack for this trip. What are the women wearing during the day...evening...in the Hawaii ports? Are the dining rooms, theatre, etc. on the ship cool. I usually find I need a long sleeve tee or sweater when on board.

I'm sure I'll have more questions too, so thank you and no rush to answer...just enjoy your cruise!
