  1. Congratulations to your mom! That's a big deal and a cruise is a perfect celebration! When my mom was receiving chemo she was told to think of something she was looking forward to when it was over. It really helped her to get through it. A cruise is wonderful to look forward to!!!!

  2. Have done this itinerary many times on various ships out of SJU. We love this itinerary. All of the islands are fantastic. You can do all day excursions or just short excursions and then come back to the ship. Most of these have "action" tours if you wish and they all have beaches you can just go hang out at if you are wanting a "do-nothing" day. To the poster that said St. Lucia was scary....I am so sorry. We love St L. However, we usually just go play golf. I have done "island tour" type excursions and they are fabulous. Pre-arrange an independent tour with a driver and you will have a great time. We pre-arranged an excursion on ST L in December and it was one of the best excursions we have ever done.

As far as staying on the ship in port, it is a fun day also. However, over the years more and more folks are staying onboard so it will be a little more crowded than you might expect. However, as others said...choice of lounger by the pool or solarium. MDR is not open for lunch and JR doesn't open until 2:00 or so...Windjammer is the lunch place on port days. However, you can sleep in and have a late breakfast in WJ and then hit the pool without fighting the chair hogs and then have a leisurely WJ lunch or do JR when they open. About 2:00 or so the activities staff starts with some poolside activities and the pool band starts playing about mid afternoon. I know there is a thread on here that has the recent compasses from this (or a very similar) itinerary on this ship...so you could get an idea of what happens and is open while in port. (Of course, all activities, etc subject to change if it happens to be a different CD, etc.)

What excursion did you do in St Lucia?

  3. Does Calabaza catamarans have a ladder for easy access getting into and out of the water? That's a concern of mine. We've been on other tours where there was just a rope ladder which was very difficult to get back in the water with.

I would say it is more like a set of steps you can easily sit on and sort of glide right into the water. I think there were three steps. They are actually part of the catamaran itself. Attached to the bottom step is a small ladder which is in the water. It does not sway like a rope ladder. I was very comfortable as I am not one to jump off the sides of the boat. We were on Calabaza in November. It was by far the best excursion we have experienced. Gina and the crew are extremely hospitable and helpful. They just want you to have a wonderful time. And we did. Planning on going with them next time we are in Barbados.

  4. Thanks! It's so hard to figure out exactly who is at the pier or not. Will try the rates on Hertz and Coastal.

Hertz office where you pick up your keys is at the port but then you are bused to their cat lot/garage where you actually pick up your vehicle

  5. And that's what you'll get on either boat. Having done both, Calabaza just edges out Silvermoon. Calabaza only had 12 passengers while Silvermoon had 24, itinerary, service and food are about equal. Just like the layout of Calabaza a little better.

Thanks! We went with Calabaza. Silvermoon just emailed me with the last two openings but we will stay with my original thought!!

  6. We used the laundry service on our Mediterranean cruise. The bag thatBob mentioned is great! We found that formal was less formal because if the luggage weights. I wore light weight dresses. But the best in my opinion is dress black slacks with changes of tops and jewelry. In Madrid we found that the residents seemed to wear darker colors and flats instead of sandals. Of course we had packed khakis and sandals. Even we could pick out the tourists. Our son lived there for five months and wore mostly dark colors.

  7. Thanks to a cardiac event earlier this year (at the ripe old age of 38), I am on a low-fat diet. Are there any "off the menu" low fat items that anyone here has had in the MDR somewhat recently, which you'd recommend? I don't want an entire cruise of plain grilled chicken and angel food cake. :-) We will be on the Allure in November, but even if there have been other low fat items you've had on other Royal Caribbean ships, I can always ask about those.

I am luck in that I do NOT need to have sugar-free items. I know from talking with tablemates on previous cruises, Royal Caribbean often thought low fat meant sugar free, and obviously the two are quite different. I'm supposed to stay low cholesterol and low sodium, but items low in fat are typically low in cholesterol.

Any specific entree and dessert suggestions for the main dining room would be GREAT!!!

    Thanks in advance!

We always enjoy the salmon. Last March on the Allure it was featured nightly. It was very good! I think there was some sort of sauce on it but you can always get it on the side.

  8. I'm prestigious but

there is more to do in Galveston!

One thing is the gulf beach is right in town in Galveston with everything else!

In Corpus it's a half hour away from town.

If it's just partying you can do at either though.

What is your idea of a fun beach get away?

May have some ideas for y'all,

if you have never been to Galveston.

Typical beach day for us is to walk , then sit on the beach, swim, read, lounge. Evening we look for a nice dinner. Family vacations. Somewhere on this thread I received lots of help with our daughter's move to Austin. She miss ed our annual beach vacation so would like to visit the beach there. We will be visiting her for a week and are looking for a beach. Any recommendations are appreciated as well as a hotel. Thanks!!

  9. The site has been an amazing research tool and has allowed me to find answers to every questions i have had yet.

I will say the boards have made me a bit nervous as it seems like a great majority of cruisers do not like kids around them (we have three) and i am also a bit worried about the general additude of some cruisers i am very very laid back. and it seems like a lot of people get mad over the most silly things. I Personally think i may be a little to blue collar to ever be a real "cruiser" but our family is gonna happily give it a shot...

Your family will love it because there is something for everybody!! I think that cruising is the very best vacation for a mom because there is no big discussion of what you are going to do or where you will go, no worries about pleasing everyone's palate, there is always something to eat that you don't have to prepare, no laundry to do, no beds to make, no towels to wash, no air mattresses to inflate, room service!! I can go on! It will be very relaxing for you!! And the kids will be in heaven! Ours always were!! Enjoy your time!! It's the best!!
