  1. Nice review. We are leaving on Epic on Saturday, and your review will be helpful. As an aside, I've had prime rib twice before in NCL main dining rooms (Star and Epic), and both times it was nearly inedible. Never complained, but had two deserts.

We were on the Epic in January, in the Haven. The prime rib in the Haven Dining Room was one of the biggest disappointments of the cruise. The meat was tough and tasteless. The au jus was like a thick, burned, canned gravy. Having had delicious prime rib on previous NCL cruises, I was very disappointed. I am wondering whether this was just the Epic, or it is now the case throughout NCL. I guess I will find out on our next cruise.

  2. I have wondered if it is all of NCL, or just the Epic. We recently sailed the Epic Western Caribbean Jan 13 - 20, 2018. It was our third time in the Haven. Previously on the Escape, Eastern Caribbean, and the Getaway Transatlantic, we had wonderful experiences, especially the food in the Haven.

It appeared that the food and beverage manager may have been trying to cut corners to save money. On the first evening, I ordered prime rib in the Haven dining room. The meat was tasteless and the au jus tasted like Franco canned gravy. I couldn't finish it. For lunch one day, I ordered the French dip sandwich, which was half the size as I was served on our two previous Haven cruises. It was accompanied by the same canned gravy as the prime rib. In fact, the portions of all the meals we had were much smaller than previous experiences.

We ate in Le Bistro one night. The onion soup and creme brule were great. However, my wife only had two bites of her veal, and I ate only two of the three, silver dollar sized, tasteless lamb loins. We had chicken wings in O'Sheehan's, which were the smallest wings I have ever seen, along with two tiny pieces of celery.

We also ate in Cagney's twice, and I had wonderful ribeye steaks each time.

We found the service by the staff to be exceptional, as usual, with the exception of our butler, and again, this may be food related. After the first day afternoon snack of chocolate covered strawberries, I told her that we don't care for sweets. The following day she brought us cookies. And the next day she brought us canape's. We has a similar problem with the butler on the Getaway, and he said they can only bring what the kitchen makes. However, after that, he brought us sandwiches and cheese plates.

So now, as I am planing our next cruise, I am wondering if if it is all of NCL, or just the Epic?

  3. its not just on US soil, there are also delays (albeit not quite as long) when they do the TA back to Europe. I can understand frustrations though if this was unexpected. I love TA's too much to let this spoil my cruise. (unfortunately I haven't been able to get enough time off work recently to do the westbound TA... but it is my plan at some point!)

On the Getaway Transatlantic May 2017, we experienced horrendous delays at Southampton, Great Britain. We could not dock in the Azores, where the British customs officers were supposed to board to pre-screen us, due to weather. As a result, people spent more than six hours in line, going through customs. We were in the Haven and had priority, but it still took us two hours to get off the ship. Everyone on the ship had to go through customs, regardless of whether they intended to get off the ship or not. Most people missed their excursions. There were many very unhappy cruisers. However, it was not within NCL's control.

  4. Since they moved the sail away time to 7pm, and the muster drill is at 4:30pm, I am wondering about what time the drill ends? Prior to them changing the sail away time, we had scheduled dinner at 5pm. I am not worried about "not making the reservation", I am just curious to how long the muster drill generally takes. I would imagine there are hundreds of others that did the same as us. I have been on ships where a few lazy passengers are 20 minutes late to the drill and the everyone stands around waiting for them to get there, and the muster drill took an hour. Again, I am just wondering.

Thanks! July 2nd can't come fast enough.

The muster drill for us was pretty much on time and only lasted 15-20 minutes. We were in no hurry, so we waited till the theater emptied before we left. However, it still took forever to get an elevator. You will want to sit or stand near the back and consider taking the stairs to dinner.

  5. Just off the Escape and there was basically no smoke smell in 6-7-8. I was so surprised. Others in my party said they didn't even realize there was smoking indoors anywhere. We are all non-smokers. The only place we noticed smoke smell was the upstairs pool bar. I guess it can vary cruise to cruise.

I totally agree with LrgPizza. My wife and I were on the same sailing. We were in the casino on Sunday afternoon for the Slot Pull, and commented that there was no noticeable smoke. The only place we noticed a strong smoke odor was walking by the Waves Bar on the pool deck.

  6. The thermal suite on the Escape is GREAT! If you are looking for that quite getaway, the thermal suite is the place. They did a good job in putting in a lot of loungers and heated rock chairs (more than any other NCL megaship). We always book thermal suite passes, and the spa on the Escape is not to be missed. We enjoyed the Escape in October and will be sailing on her again in a few weeks,,,, with thermal suite passes in hand.

Can you get a cocktail in the spa?
