  1. .....in December of 2012, we cruised out of NY on the Carnival Miracle going to Port Canaveral, Nassau and Freeport. I would never do that again. That time of year you can't get far enough south and return in 7 days to get some warm water to go in.

I will be sailing out of Florida instead.

  2. Gets confusing doesn't it? "Royal Naval Dockyard" is the whole area at the tip of Ireland island; King's Wharf is the historic dock area; and Heritage Wharf is the new extension to the northwest that was added a few years ago so Dockyard could accommodate two cruise ships at once. Heritage Wharf had some modifications two years ago to fit even larger ships like the Breakaway. Most of the time, the larger cruise lines each reserve a particular area: Celebrity/RCCL uses Kings Wharf, NCL uses Heritage Wharf.

.....if NCL always uses Heritage Wharf, why does NCL still use King's Wharf as the destination name on her itinerary? You would figure that NCL would want to separate themselves from the pack, no?

  3. I know there are fireworks on the Breakaway. Are there fireworks on the Getaway? Does anyone know which night they are on? We corrdinate a (getting larger all the time) group and I'm starting to work on our "social itinerary" If there's fireworks I want to make sure we don't interfer with those!

    Thanks

  4. We will be in Bermuda on Sept. 8 and 9th. How do I go about arranging a day pass at Coco Reef Beach? There will be 3 of us.

Do you recommend a taxi to and from (my husband does have some mobility issues) and will probably stay up by the pool for the most part. Is it easy to get loungers and umbrellas by the pool?

The day pay includes towels...anything else? Or is it just an entry fee and towels. I looked on their website but didn't find much information.

    Thanks!!!!

Google them and call them. That's how you make the reservation. You pay when you get there.

  5. "All cars enter the Terminal from the north at the intersection of 55th Street and 12th Avenue (State Route 9A)."

Our car service also picked us up right outside the terminal, however, we were told by the car service, traffic entering the terminal area is limited and we MAY have to walk across 12th Street if the area is too congested.

I'm curious; maybe security only lets taxis and "car service" in the terminal gate?

I don't remember private cars(family members) entering the terminal area, only taxis and "car service", but that was only my observation.

Unless they have changed it since last year, I got picked up on the lower level by a personal vehicle and used a porter. I think it might be the porters too who have a hand in it. (or a hand out too).

  6. I am debating on going on breakaway. It is the only cruise out of nyc first week of March. I hear so many bad reviews on ship. We like to do trivia and attending shows. We would not be doing any dining that costs more money. Reading about cruise it sounds like they only do one main show throughout the cruise. Not interested in shows that cost more money. Also read that most trivia is in the atrium and space is limited. We don't dance, play bingo or worship the sun. Would we be bored on this ship.

.....you really should have a much better attitude going into this. The Breakaway is a fantastic ship and has plenty to do. Why don't you peruse through these Dailies posted by angelin269 and see what you think.

If I didn't like the ship, I wouldn't be going on her a second time.

  7. I'm wondering if we should switch days. Originally I planned for us to do the beaches on Wednesday and Dockyard on Friday.

I saw a bus schedule on here somewhere.

Personally, I would stay near the dockyard on Friday. I am not one to press my luck when leaving Bermuda. You never know what could happen.

  8. I don't see anywhere on NCL's site that there's a discount on the UDP for a child. I wouldn't purchase it for a child as it would cost more than paying the children's charge at the specialty restaurants. If it's half-price for children and you think you'll use it enough to make it worth the price, then... If it's not half price, you could purchase it for the adults in your party and then pay with your card for her meals each time you eat at a specialty restaurant.

I'm new to NCL and I purchased it for my upcoming cruise because I want to try out all the specialty restaurants and the UDP saves a little bit over paying individually at the different restaurants.

I don't believe the UDP is discounted for a child, but don't they usually get 1/2 price in the pay restaurants?

  9. From Jan 2013

Mr Crockwell added: “We also need to look at making Dockyard an even more attractive destination for tourists.

“There is a mindset from some passengers to get out of Dockyard as soon as they arrive and we need to counter that.

“If we can keep people in Dockyard there is not going to be such a rush and pressure on the transport system to get everyone to Horseshoe or Hamilton as soon as they get off the ship. And this obviously helps local business up there too.”

Maybe you did not understand what I meant. Maybe they are doing it on purpose.

  10. Hi,

When leaving the terminal in NY on the ground level, is it possible to have your transportation pick you up at the entrance?

We are on the Gem next month. Taveling with wife in a wheelchair (unable to walk distances do to MS), son, DIL and 17monthold grandson. Not sure if we're going to be able to get ourselves and luggage accross 12th street to be picked up by a family member.

    Thanks for the help.

On all my cruises out of New York, after embarkation, I have always been picked up at the terminal, not across the street. Just make sure whomever is picking you up, decide beforehand upstairs or downstairs and make sure you have their cell numbers and make sure the phones are charged.

Needless to say, a comedy of errors led to a bad pickup for me.

  11. Hi there,

I am practicing my basic strategy. I think I got the rules right from conventional blackjack on board.

6 Deck, Continuous, Dealer Stands on 17, Double Down on Any Card, Double After Split allow, Dealer Peeks on 10, No Surrender, Blackjack 3/2.

Can you confirm these are correct?

    Thanks.

When I first read this, all I could think of was coold8 sitting at home, in a chair saying "hit, stay, stay, double, I'll take the insurance".

  12. wasiii,

Can you please report back here after your upcoming BA cruise, if of course, you are planning on using the buses and/or shuttles?

We would like to go again next year but are confused over this recent change.

Thanks in advance. Have a great trip!

  13. My FIL & BIL just did the your last week. It is $79pp and held on Saturday morning (the last sea day). They reported that there was some climbing & quite a bit of standing. As might be expected, they found some areas of the tour more interesting than others with the Bridge being top of list. The souvenir pictures were taken in one of the kitchens and were in a lovely portfolio that included pictures of the ship, Captain, and our route to Bermuda. My FIL really enjoyed it, my BIL didn't (but also only went to keep his Dad company).

    Hope that helps!

  14. I have less than a month to my cruise and I'm not only a first time cruiser, it's also my first trip to Bermuda. Here's my tentative plan of what to do for 2.5 days. Does this sound feasible? I hope I'm not packing in too much. I'm not much of a beach person, so I probably won't spend much time in the sand (more just for view and pictures). I'd like to devote most of my time to hikes/leisure walks. Also, I will get a 2 day ferry/bus pass so getting around isn't an issue from the royal naval dock. Any advice would be appreciated!

Day 1 - Take ferry to Hamilton

    1) Crystal and Fantasy Caves

    2) Go to Swizzle inn either before or after for lunch

    3) Go to Blue Point Park - according to map, it's right near the caves. What's the best way to enter? I've heardabout this Tom Moore's jungle but I don't know much about it.

    4) Go to Spittal Pond if there's time

    5) Visit botanical gardens.

Would it make more sense to return via the ferry or by bus only?

Day 2 - I think this all involves #7 bus

    1) Stop by Glass bottom beach

    2) Visit either horseshoe bay beach or Warwick beach

    3) Visit Gibbons Hill lighthouse

If there's anything worth visiting on this route, I'd love tips.

    Day 3

(Since the ship leaves at 5, I'm going to stick to docks mostly)

    1) Try the railway trail

    2) Lunch at frog & onion

    3) Drop by glassworks and rum cake place (forget names)

    4)Visit the maritime museum

I'm not much of a history buff, so I was planning on skipping St George on this trip.

Also, I wanted to add, I'm not sure if makes better sense to see the botanical gardens on day 2 instead. I don't believe the #7 goes there.

.....you are packing an awful lot into this trip. We try to do 1 excursion a day. Wednesday we are renting a boat for half a day and Thursday we have the day at Coco Reef. Not sure where everything is in location to each other but I wish you luck.

I remember when I cruised to Alaska we tried to do 2 excursion a day. By the third port day we were spent. We had 2 things left to do, a train ridr up the gold rush trail or a hiking, canoeing bicycle adventure.

Needless to say, laziness won out and we took the train ride.

    Had a great time.

Only 25 days and some odd hours till departure. I'm going to have to talk to my dog and ask him how the hell he sleeps 22 hours a day. If I could do that the cruise would come in no time.

Talk to you on the roll call.

    ;)
