  1. It is great when the locals turn out, en masse, to see the QM2 when departing. Makes you feel very lucky when onboard. I especially like all the water traffic and tours hovering around the ship.

    The locals here are Germans , and they have a strong Tradition in Transatlantic

    Ocean Liner Travels. Bremerhaven to New York

    And back

    The German Ocean Liners were Strongly built ,beautiful and popular

    I can understand the great turn out

    In Hamburg haven, Germany

  2. Well you were not .

    Some Golden Rules my better half follows as she has lost :p her Spleen

    Go to the middle of the stack to get the plate if you can.

    Dig into the cutlery handle end. Just in case someone sneezed all over them .

    Open / Close anything you can manage with the Back of your hand

    Go to the middle /back for Magazines / Papers etc

    Always go to the back/bottom for anything in SuperMarkets as it is newer / fresher

    Always wash your hands. Dont touch your eyes / nose / mouth unless you are 110% sure they are clean.

    Avoid lifts if possible . ie walk up the stairs as it is healthier anyway.

    and other suggestions welcome especially in a new room / cabin /suite in

    regards to the bedding .:eek:

    Brilliant,Funny...Flying doesn't look so bad now.:D

  3. Is the U.S.S..intrepide moored in Brooklyn??

    Bud Light Hotel will also take over the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, including the deck of the retired military ship, which is permanently docked in the pier adjacent to where Getaway will be moored.

    Opps, I don't want to jump ahead of Salacia, so She will answer you.

    But I read the article that Salacia added here, and the ship is the Getaway,not Breakaway

    It appears the the piers from the Intrepide to pier 88 will be ONE BIG PARTY!

    amazing for cold New york in January .

  4. I wonder if Carnival Corp. has some say in this as well, perhaps assigning its various cruise lines to specialize to limit competing with each other. Cunard has world cruises, and the British market for the Mediterranean, Carnival and Princess and Holland America have the Caribbean, Holland America and Princess have Alaska, etc.

    Yes , most likely Carnival Corp has top marketing people . NCL which is not

    Carnival ,as you know, is giving them competition .

  5. Another interpretation would be that Cunard has shifted available inventory to segments as opposed to the full cruise and selling the segments at a discount (as you've observed) but keeping the FULL (bold underline) world cruise priced high in order to maintain the element of exclusivity there (which probably is part of the appeal of the full world cruise cruise to some).

    Yes ,you got it! it al about marketing strategies. I sailed on the last segment of world cruise

    in April 2013 from NY to Southampton. I got a great deal with Balcony ,8 days.

  6. Am I imagining this or did I hear that Norwegian Getaway (or Breakaway) will be chartered by Budweiser Light to serve as a hotel during the Super Bowl?

    I plan on being so far out of town as I can get.

    Not I. I will be in New York. I sailed on the Breakaway

    And it was great. The Ship made for New York

  7. Sadly enough, this is me answering my own question: NONE.

    QM2 is scheduled to dock in Red Hook on 3 Jan 2014, and again on 16 May 2014. To the best of my knowledge, there will no other ships docked during that time. HOWEVER, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is used for many other functions, not just ships docking, and not just for a stupor bowl party.

    Personally, I'm happy that the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal has multiple uses.

    Three Cheers for Brooklyn!

    Salacia

    . Yes Salacia. Three cheers for Brooklyn !!!

    And Red hook was hit hard by Sandy!!

  8. When would you like this cruise as the three ships all have a world cruise from January with QM2 not returning until the second week of May. At least one and maybe two of the Cunard ships have completely sold every full World cruise cabin without the need to offer any type of discount and I am guessing that if it ain't broke, why meddle?

    How many ships are sailing to the West Indies during that period and would cunard have to compete with them?

    Hi glojo, The Cunard ships have become world cruise ships during the winter

    months, as you know. Cunard gave up on New York. I thought that the QM2 was to be assigned to NY and do winter cruises. Not so.

    There are cruises from NY to the Caribbean during the winter: NCL,Carnival,

    Celebrity.

    Not All Is Lost.* There is a New Cruise Ship Made For New York!

    BREAKAWAY, from NCL

    I sailed to Bermuda on a 7 day cruise and I enjoyed the cruise.

    it sails from NY every Sunday. November -December to Bahamas &

    Florida. Then it does two 12 day cruises to West Indies in January.

    I heard that its fully booked.

  9. According to reports, this is the biggest storm of the year and it is forecasted to land in the Philippines within the next 24 hours.

    "The storm is near its theoretical maximum strength, with sustained winds of 290 kph, and is not expected to weaken significantly, due to very warm water temperatures along its path, reports the Washington Post". http://world.time.com/2013/11/06/the-biggest-storm-in-the-world-this-year-is-headed-for-the-philippines/

    For the people of the Philippines, and the Filipino crew members on board ships worried about their loved ones back home, you are in our thoughts and prayers.

    Salacia

    Edited to add: "'The maximum wind gusts are now exceeding 300km per hour near the eye and it's heading west at about 30km per hour towards the central Phillipines." http://www.skynews.com.au/topstories/article.aspx?id=922346

    Salacia,Thank you for bring this important message to topic. We here , who sail on the Cunard ships are aware of the Filipino crew who make our vacations!!! Good luck to them

  10. Makes me want to bring my own dishes from home to use.

    I think the various buffet stations should have a staff person handing out dishes of some type of dispenser that does not allow touching other plates. I wonder if I could invent that and make enough for a World Cruise??

    bring your dishes sounds like a good idea, the plastic ones. In School buffet at lunch time , the Students are given styrofoam trays, with compartments for

    different foods. Clean,disposable. Styrofoam trays may be the solution here.

    I should copyright* my idea. :cool:

  11. Yes, we greet this ship everytime it comes snd leaves. It is a tradition since 2005.

    Hi Cunardaddict, The send off of the QM2 from Hamburg is amazing. It makes me think about the Ocean liner Tradition of Germany.

    The Germans made the most magnificent and advanced technology whe they made their ships.

    One I can think of was the S/S Imperator, in 1912, became the Berengaria

    to the UK.

  12. I respect you live on the Western Baltic coast and I would be an idiot to tell you about weather patterns in your area. I live quite literally on the on the coast of the English Channel\Western Approaches and when I say Easterly winds are feared by our local seamen, I am not making that up. I owned a 30ft motor cruiser and would not have any worries or concerns about being out in a force 8 or maybe severe gale force 9 Westerly winds but a 5 or at worse a force 6 Easterly would see me running for the marina.

    To highlight how close I live to the sea this is the view from one of our front windows over looking Torbay and out into the channel.

    QM2DSC_0036c_zps28ab1a7f.jpg

    The rear of our property we overlook Lyme Bay and during the last severe Easterly gales a cliff face was washed away causing parts of a very nice house to fall into the sea. Last week-end we had as you know hurricane force westerly winds and the sea never got near those cliffs.

    I do not doubt you took your pictures and they are as you describe but if you were in the Western Approaches, as opposed to the Irish Channel (the gap further to the North that stretches between Ireland and the UK) then they would have been even more spectacular in you had encountered Easterly severe or Storm force winds. ;) Trust me and to suggest our small fishing boats fish in those conditions is just plain wrong :)

    Hello glojo, your picture of the QM2 sailing outside your window facing the channel is AMAZING! Now the cliff erosion is alarming. I was unaware of this problem on the southern coast of England. Too often we see this erosion of the coast and houses falling in to the sea in California.

    These storms are universal and seem to be more intense!

    your contributions are thought provoking . well done

  13. Hi Turquoise, yes it is interesting how things change, and they seem to change frequently. I don't think a US driver's license is currently all that is required for entry into Canada for US citizens...

    "Entry into Canada: Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry both proof of citizenship and proof of identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

    Children under 16 need only present proof of U.S. citizenship"

    copied from http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1082.html#entry_requirements

    Although I've never been asked to show anything other than my NY Driver's License when disembarking in Canadian ports, I do have my valid USA passport. (Same applied when I visited Bermuda last year.)

    Hi Salacia, Thank for the update. Yes that is true of Canada, showing a drivers license. Bermuda seems ok with a valid drivers license,but I agree is best to have a Passport

  14. My British friends and relatives tell me they need a passport for entry to Canada. Canadians definitely need a passport for entry to the UK. There was a time when there was a preferred queue for Commonwealth citizens at British airports. Sadly, other than the fact that HM The Queen is the Queen of Canada as well as Queen of the UK, etc., the Commonwealth doesn't mean as much as it once did. The preferred queue is now for citizens of the EU. When this changed it annoyed my father and three uncles who remembered that Canadians were the first to come to the aid of the "mother country" in 1939 and were not required to queue up with "others" when they arrived on the troop ships. But Dad got over it and still visited England ever year. My mother was born in the UK but had a Canadian passport.

    Interesting how things change. I assumed that Canada and the UK had a Commonwealth relationship. Although Canadians may have a better relationship with other Commonwealth Member Nations, eg. Bermuda,

    Americans don't need a passport to enter Canada. A drivers license will do.

  15. Just had a quick look at all the cruise ship heading up and down the English Channel

    QM2 = 16knts

    Queen Victoria = 19

    Arcadia = 18

    Oriana = 12

    Aurora = 13

    Adonia = 12

    Adventure of the Seas = 17

    Braemar = 17

    Certainly a number of cruise ships heading both to and from Southampton although Braemar is actually heading to Dover

    Very busy day/night in the channel. I know most of the ships,except Braemar? Adonia?

  16. On the East bound transatlantic sailings , there is Uk immigration on board .

    West bound , the US immigration is in the port of Brooklyn

    A stop over , in Halifax, from The US is filling a form

    And proof of citizenship with a valid passport or US drivers license .

    It may be the same for UK citizens .

    Cunard makes the immigration process very smooth

    And easy

    I am ditto-ing myself, since I am not sure if UK citizens

    need a passport or photo ID for immigration into Canada, as they are a member of the Commonwealth. :confused:
