  1. I can't speak to specific dolphin encounter companies, but I know that most places have a price for participants, and a lower price for observers. If you're considering a ship excursion, I would just call someone at the cruise line and ask about pricing for observers. I'm sure they wouldn't expect 9-yr-olds to go alone.

  2. CruisinCrow, thanks so much for your review and pictures! I'm booked on a 4-nighter on Sky leaving December 5. I have sailed Norwegian once before, but have never been to Freeport or Great Stirrup Cay. Very much looking forward to it, and will probably look into the all-inclusive option in Nassau at least, since I've been there several times before.

  3. Mcatmcat, I think you made the right choice. Initially I had never heard of the B&J Sweet, and probably would have said "take the balcony", but after reading the replies and seeing the video, I would stick with the Sweet if for no other reason than the novelty. The lounge perks and free daily ice cream are great bonuses! That cabin is so cute that I think I'd be cruising through the port gift shops looking for cow knick-knacks to add to the collection. Kudos to the poster who made that video! Loved the country banjo accompaniment.

  4. In-fact on Sunday I found a junior suite available for $82 , yes I said $82 for the four day cruise as the solo price. I checked a number of times, but on Monday that offer was gone. I don't know if it was for the weekend only or if all the cheap places were booked.

But I also noticed on on the weekend all the four day trips were marked at $200 per person but now it has jumped up to $238 per person.

I talked to my travel agent, and she said she could get it for $280 CND but I already have booked Oct.10 and bought plane tickets and now I find they want to charge $250 to change my flights.

In the future I will not book any flights and just drive from Canada to Florida as I can change my travel times any time without paying extra.

Wow, $82 for a 4-night Junior Suite solo? That's unbelievable! I notice that the Empress has been alternating 4-night and 5-night cruises. Both visit Key West & Cozumel, the 4 night just has 1 less sea day.

  5. Check out cruiseplum.com for RCCL super cheap deals for solo. Some 70% less than regular. So cheap must be a mistake.

Over Labor Day weekend I booked a 5-nighter on Empress of the Seas out of Miami, for about $299 solo base price for an oceanview. There were similar prices on that ship on other dates in October, and possibly November. I didn't look at dates past early November. Check my earlier post on this thread for exact price...I believe that including taxes, fees and pre-paid gratuities, the total was about $423. It visits Key West and Cozumel.

  6. They have been showing no-single supplements on October sailings of Empress of the Seas (RCI) out of Miami. Not all categories on all dates, but worth checking out. They usually run 4 or 5 night itineraries to Western Caribbean. I snagged an Oceanview on Deck 8 for a 5 night cruise leaving 10/29/16. My cost...solo...was $248.50, plus $103.28 tax & fees, plus $67.50 pre-paid tips (my choice), for a total of $419.78 all in. This is confirmed, and my card has been charged. Hopefully these fares are still available for anyone looking for a fall getaway! Looking forward to this Halloween cruise, only wish we were in Key West that day (we'll be there Oct. 30). Empress of the Seas is Royal's smallest ship.

  7. Going on this 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise. Found 150% single supplement and relatively low price. Balcony cabin $709 on Going, Going, Gone sale. Any other solo travelers going?

    What cruise is it?

  8. I am also upset with the way Princess treated the original poster regarding their "mistaken" fare. Most of us who cruise solo spend a lot of time searching for bargains, in order to avoid paying an unfair double fare. When we find something good and book it, the fare should be honored. If they are going to be able to cancel your reservation, there should be a 24-hour limit on when they can claim a "mistake" to the customer. If they don't notice until a week later, too bad for them.

I, and some other folks here, were able to snag a really good solo fare from Royal Caribbean a few months ago for an Alaska cruise next May. I believe I'm paying $738 for 7 nights solo in an oceanview. They changed the fare a few days later, but are (so far) honoring the price we booked at. When they spell out a price for you and accept your deposit, that should mean something. Offering you an upgrade but asking you to pay more for your original cabin, does sound like bait and switch to me. A lousy way to do business, especially with an Elite passenger. I would not be quiet about this!

  9. While I didn't focus on the ship details for the Fathom line, I did look at that wonderful deal but the timing wasn't good for me...I'll keep an eye out for future deals from them. But it was my understanding that the volunteer work was voluntary. Unless they make you sign something as a condition of booking, I don't see how they could force you to work. If you're a disabled senior citizen, what could they make you do?

  10. I don't know if I'm inferring something you didn't mean, MidwesternCruiser2, but I am sort of leery about being alone in a country where I don't speak the native language. It's probably kept me away from European cruises so far. Definitely I would stick to group tours, either through the ship or privately. I'd also stick to cruiselines who cater to English-speaking passengers. But I do hope to try it one day! I may start with a repositioning or Transatlantic cruise.

  11. I just returned Saturday from a week-long solo on the NCL Spirit. No problems dining alone at all, and I had 3 specialty restaurant dinners. I will say that I had 2 breakfasts in the MDR, and they were ordinary... I would stick with the buffet there. The only thing I would say is that for dinner, you are not going to get the same quality and variety of dishes that you will in the dining room. They served prime rib twice in the MDRs last week and it was excellent. The desserts and side dishes are also superior. I can't speak about room service because I've never ordered it. On this ship they charge $7.95 for room service orders, and there was no menu in my cabin. Luckily you can check the dining room menus every day, and if nothing strikes your fancy, then do the buffet. No 24-hour pizza on this ship, but they had pizza on the lunch buffet and it looked very unappetizing. There is a 24 hour restaurant that does short order snacks, like wings and fish & chips, all free and they cook to order, and serve you at your table or at the adjacent Shanghai Bar.
