  1. Hi our neixt cruise is a TA from Rio to Spain in March. This is the season when we may encounter rain as well as hot sun while we're on trips or just walking around the Ports site seeing, We have have about 6 or 7 ports of call in Brazil as we head north up the coast before turning out across the Atlantic.

My normal footwear in hot sunny climates are my croc Patricia sandals, which are a bit slippy if my feet get wet. I normally wear sun dresses and take an emergency plastic poncho, but what to do about footwear in possible tropical rain?

How do you ladies cope in these conditions? I don't want to wear any type of sports style shoe...just not my style

  2. If your concerned about body warmth, I'd opt for a thin thermal vest undr the dress (could also be worn under other clothes..It#s what Princess Di always did and if it was good enough for her...), I have a sparkly black cardigan which is useful or perhaps a black crushed velvet type fringed pashmina. I love my black lace dress which sounds similar to yours with a sparkly statement brooch

  3. I find that I need clear or net sections in these bags so I can see easily what's there, I also pack them flat ie unrolled as I find it's easier to pack the rest of my things in the case that way. It's good to hang in the bath room or even from a suction hook else where

  4. My recommendation is Thermal underwear, silk if you like. Vests and long johns. We've been Round the Horn a few times, also NZ and I can't recommend thermal underwear enough. If it's really cold even 2 vests together under a sweater. Scarf, hat and fingerless gloves or mittens where the finger bit folds back (invaluable when you want to take photos or use binoculars. Waterproof and wind proof outer layer, warm sox and waterproof shoes/boots. Merino wool or cashmere is good.

I always find the temperature in ships public rooms a bit chilly esp Dining rooms and theatres

  5. You could put a color that you wear a lot under the brim. Or you could go bold with maybe red? What about a companion fabric? Do they have one at Joann's?

Making 2 washable hats id a good idea as fabric hats can get a bit sweaty round the seam where the brim joins the main part of the hat. I have used a bit of removeable towelling there before.

Also green is a good colour for the underside of the brim, I believe it's been used in the services when people are on parade, apparently it supposed to stop them fainting.

  6. The Amazon is a long riversnip..(I would provide some links, but CC will destroy them, so sorry I cannot be more specific!)

We are also interested in this sort of cruise, but have seen and read reports of not always getting an Amazon cruise, but ending up with a tributary in the Amazon region

If possible could you email me your suggestions please, thanx

  7. Thanx again. I write a diary during our cruises, but before we go I try to do a lot of research on the plaes, so we have a bit of bakground information before we go and that´s added into my diaries as well together with selected photos. So far I´ve completed my notes on Santos, coffee historyand beach garden, but I also want to see the Wyland mural; Buzios beach, boardwalk, bronze statues and shopping;Salvador just loads of history everywhere and music. got lots of informtion from this website you also mentioned http://www.salvadorcentral.com I like the sound of the cooking school, so will check that out.

I know what you mean about tourists, my husband used to be a bit timid in ¨different¨ places where there were lots of local diversions, but trips to India, Moroco and Africa cured him!!! :-))

Looking forward to a trip in the Lacerda lift, but have seen pix of a cable car as well. We would like to get to the BonFim church, the miracle room looks unique and definatelt want to get some Bonfim ribbons as gifts

I must admit I forget about You tube for researching places. Thanx for you help

  8. Thanx for that. I have been doing my research, that´s how I found out about the place, reviews have been varied. I thought it might be interesting for afternoon evening visit.

We will be cruising up the coast of Brazil from Rio to Santos, Buzios, Salvador, Maceio, Forteleza, before coming back to Europe across the Atlantic, Any hints or tips on the other ports of call? It´s always nice to get first hand information from a local person.

  9. OK I recognise the senario, living in Euro crisis Spain where we half finished projects which have been abandoned eg hi speed train lines, motorways with no flyovers completed etc etc, then they go and spend money on refurbishing government offices.

  10. We´re thinking we might like to visit this market on a Saturday afternoon and evening (from reading a bit about it it seems they have music and dancing in the evenings) also do a bit of souvenir shopping

    Has anyone been?

What hints, tips, advice could you give us please? Is it safe (provided you keep your wits about you as from photos it looks busy)? what about transport, would it be better to go by taxi from Ipanema, if so any idea on price? How about buses? How long would it take to get there? Any thoughts on particular items to buy? One time when we were in Brazil we bought a painted wooden parrot on a branch which hangs on our terrace, but we´ve never found another one and I think he needs a friend or two.

They seem to have lots of food stalls there as well, any recommendations for something local to eat?

This is our 3rd visit to Rio so we´ve done all the usual touristy stuff, although we´ve never visited the Hippy Market in Ipanema ...yet. Any thoughts or advice on that one? We might do that on Sunday together with the beach before joining our ship on Monday.
