1.

I bought a beautiful floor length black gown that is relatively straight from the bust through the hem. I hung it on the back of my bedroom door and one of my cats decided that she wanted to use it as a scratching post  She put 2 slits about 1in long each in the bottom of the front of the dress. they were a bit too high to be taken off when it was hemmed so I told my seamstress to make it an asymmetrical hem (knee length in the front and long in the back) to fix it. My question is, in your opinions, is this still appropriate for formal night? I've always worn long gowns for formal nights and am just not sure of the appropriateness of the asymmetrical hem... I don't know if it makes any difference but DH is planning on just a suit (leaving the tux at home this time) and we're both relatively young (30's

To a cat person like me, this is a very funny story! It sounds like you made the best of it; and I think your dress will be just fine.

  2. Lawyers representing the victims' families said they wanted to look beyond Schettino.

"The reason these people died is not because of Captain Schettino, the reason these people died is because of the corporation, the negligence in their practices and safety procedures.

There was no reason for anyone to die," said Peter Ronai, a lawyer for the victims' families

Of course, they go for the deep pockets. That at least is no different from over here.

  3. I keep wondering whether Schettino is feeling awful guilt (and accompamying suicidal thoughts), or maintaining his arrogance. Nothing that I've seen lately clarifies this, but it does learn toward the latter. Of course he's trying to save his sorry butt, but couldn't he at least pretend to have some remorse?

  4.
Like all TV reports that are limted by 45 minutes of air time, it was too compressed with once over lightly. It tried to tell the story from the personal experiences of a few passegengers and crew, none of which (in my opinion) were very compelling.

I got the biggest kick out of watching Captain Schtino's Attorney, Bruno "Lepard" (Italian), trying to spin gold out of lead ore.
Having now seen the program, I agree with both of your points.
  5.
Has anyone seen the recent CNN program on the sinking? I missed two earlier showings today but am hoping to catch it tonight, starting in about 10 minutes. I hope there's something new and enlightening in it.
Before someone gets upset, I know I should have said capsizing, not sinking.
  6. Could hardly wait to tell you ladies about this dress & the FANTASTIC deal I got at Steinmart. The dress was marked down to 35.99 & the sign said 50% off plus it was a Red Dot sale & I had the coupon for the extra 25% off, so I figured it would be about 13.50. When I got to the ck. out I had her ck the price & it came up at 7.95!! Then I got the additonal 25% off. The dress cost me a whopping 5.96 !!!! Am I HAPPY OR WHAT! :D:D:p (really didn't need it, but I'm sure I'll use it on my nx cruise & it fits perfect).

Great dress; fantastic deal! Lucky you!

  7. This morning the floating crane positioned itself and lifted from the seabed that portion of the amid ship sliding dome that had falling off of its rails several weeks after the Costa Concordia capsized:

Thank for the translation of what we are looking at; I would never have figured it out on my own. Nonetheless, I found this entire event fascinating. But I can't figure out how to find photos myself, except for the continuing Giglio cam. Is there some other place?

  8. Your right!

But in addition, there is probable cause to believe that Costa:

Authorized AND/OR knew of & condoned the sail by salute AND may have been complicit in making the delayed abandon ship order.

You're right too -- I think Costa may have done this also.

  9. I just hope that (ex) Capt. Schettino has a conscience and that he is spending all of his waking and sleeping moments thinking and dreaming and agonizing about all the grief and trauma and damage and deaths and loss of property and possible environmental damage that his stupidity has caused. Not to absolve Costa, which probably bears a lot of responsibility for hiring and retaining such a moron in a responsible position and, very possibly, condoning his actions.

  10. I can only agree with the above.

Considering the offer from Costa / Carnival Corp. is the lowest proposed initial settlement offer for a major transportation disaster in Europe or the U.S. in the past 30 years - the entire treatment of the passengers is a complete PR fiasco that will reduce future business for Costa considerably.

Contrast what Costa did with the actions of US Airways after Captain Sully landed a plane in the Hudson. US Airways quickly acted to treat the passengers well and compensated them. 100% of the passengers took the US Airways settlement offer (which was greater financially than Costa's) and most greatly praised the airline's handling of the entire event. It actually turned into a positive PR event for US Airways and bookings went up.

Not saying that Costa is doing the right thing, but it's a negotiating tactic. Make a low offer, so that you have room to move up to increase the offer during negotiations. If you make a reasonable, acceptable offer at first, the other side will think that they can get more from you.

  11. http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/Costa+Concordia+captain+Francesco+Schettino+facing+charge/6196877/story.html

Captain Schettino is facing additional charges for failing to describe to maratime authorities the scope of the disaster.

I am encouraged that Italian authorities are apparently serious about their investigation.

This sounds good. I'm an attorney in the U.S. but know nothing about Italian law. However if there is a such a charge, it certainly seems to fit. "Just having an electrical problem" hardly described the true situation.

  12. We asked for a clean napkin to cover the plate and took it back to the cabin for a late night snack. I think the cheese plate is also on the cabin service menu.:)

I've often ordered the cheese plate in place of dessert after I've had too many days of eating too much. Ordering it in the dining room to take back to the cabin is a good idea. Most of the time when I've ordered a cheese plate from room service they've just given me a few thin slices of cheese, similar to what you'd find at the buffet for breakfast. The dining room plate is much nicer.
