  1. A big endorsement of cheesclan's recommendation for the MV Scania. We did this last June and it was amazing. The boat is really comfortable, upper deck has great views, we spent time talking with the Capt --- I forget his name, he is Irish and had great stories to tell about living in Alaska. They take a max of 9 people, we saw all the other large boats filled with people and thought " we booked a winner". I did see the smaller Harv/Marv boats, and I am still glad we booked the MVScania, comfortable seats everywhere, covered if it's raining. A much classier trip all around. The price was a little higher than the others, but worth every penny.

  2. I have been researching hotel/transportation options for next March and found lots of good information on the West Coast Departure board. There are several extensive threads with info on LAX/San Pedro hotels dining shuttles etc.

  3. We had a partially covered min last year, C722 which was port side. I booked the mini because the price was not much more than a regular balcony under the promo we had. I would have been just as happy with a regular cabin as long as I had the large caribe deck balcony. However, we were 2 people. Since you are 3 people, I would really consider the mini for the extra room and much larger bathroom. I'd take the covered mini so you'll get the most use of the balcony regardless of the weather. Port side for Glacier Bay was great as we could hear the park ranger narration from our TV, but I would trade that to have the extra space for the whole week.

  4. Balconies for a mini suite are 9x7. Deck 10 (caribe) has regular cabins and mini suites. The regular cabins have 9x9 balconies. There is a link on this board to a website showing which decks and balconies are fully covered/half covered/uncovered. You have to carefully review those deck plans. I can say that C722 is half covered mini suite and a very nice location at the aft of the ship. Search this site for "coral covered" to find that link or you might be able to find it using google.

  5. We had C722 for Alaska and it was terrific!! quick access to the aft deck where you can get great views of either side of boat, plus comfortable recliners. Coffee was easy to get from the IC on deck 6 on the aft side of the casino, just go down the aft stairs. Only negative is the Horizon Court is at the front of the ship so a bit of a walk for that.

  6. Mr Green is correct, we had Coral c722 port side for a northbound cruise and it was terrific viewing for the glaciers, particularly Glacier Bay and College Fjord. The port side got the views first, and the ranger commentary for Glacier Bay was outstanding. We were first at the front of the Marjerie Glacier also at the end of College Fjord.

Also, we had a really sunny week and the port side got sun until very late, making it very comfortable to sit there for a long time. Of course weather is fickle in Alaska.

  7. I am not sure how the waterproof spray would affect the look of your shoes if they are suede. However one 7$ can went very far.. 2 coats each on 2 pairs of sneakers, my backpack and camera bag, with some leftover. Maybe test the spray on the walking shoes in a spot that isnt noticeable? I would spray your sneakers too just in case it's not going to harm them. It rains at home too right?

  8. It'd relatively new in the US. In the last five years the quality has improved. Perfectly acceptable for an everyday house wine at a good price. I still prefer to bring bottles on board as I can bring a variety of reds and whites, and can easily bring a bottle to dinner if I want. Can't do that with boxed wine, but it is fine for balcony drinking.

  9. On our 6/10 cruise to Alaska 8 had 2 bottles in our carry on which we had to declare after passing through metal detector. I had 6 bottles boxed and sent with checked luggage which was delivered to our room as it always has in our previous 3 cruises. I don't take a bottle to the dining room this time but was full prepared to pay corkage. I took a glass with me as we went about the ship, ordered a bottle for our Sabatini's dinner and bought a glass if we were in the casino, lounge etc.

  10. I did several years ago but couldn't say now. Maybe if you took it our of the box and packed the plastic bladder in your suitcase? But in my experience you'd just be better off putting a label on a case of regular size bottles and giving to the porters.

  11. I was in c722 in June. This is a standard mini-suite for this class of ship, so balcony is about 9x7, and half covered. It is a great location, except for the long walk to the buffet at the front of the ship!! ;) The viewing area at the back of this deck is a nice bonus. We were very happy in this cabin on our Alaska cruise.

  12. Book early for what you really want, but I would also suggest getting the Groupon app. Starting in December there were quite a few good deals available for the summer season. In January

I got a flight tour from Talkeetna for $220 for 2 people.

  13. We took the first of what I hope will be many :) trips the second week of June. We were northbound on the Coral. DH and I really liked the ship. Yes it was light very late, and later as we went further north to Denali. I wouldn't worry about the light keeping you from sleeping. We just slept when we were tired regardless of time of day. Get an eye mask if you need darkness--they are cheap. The super long daylight was really a great aspect of the whole trip. We felt transported to somewhere completely different from every day life. We had a balcony and used it all hours of the day and night to enjoy the scenery. Trading a few hours of sleep for the trip of lifetime? I would do again in a minute -- I can sleep at home.
