  1. Subject only to hotel prices, I agree with Gr J - plenty to see and enjoy in Monte Carlo.

And unless you don't fancy the uphill slog to the palace, oceanography museum. etc, no need for wheels.

    Current score......

    Monte Carlo 2 - 2 Nice

    JB :)

I also vote for Monaco as being more interesting and more scenic than Nice. If you want to avoid JB’s mentioned uphill slog, read Toms Port Guides here https://www.tomsportguides.com/uploads/5/8/5/4/58547429/monaco-06-20-2012.pdf which tell you how to use the car park elevators to get up to the top.

  2. We were drinking Angry Orchard most lunchtimes in August. We were amused that the wine waiters always called it ‘beer’, so don’t try asking what ciders they have, as they obviously aren’t familiar with the item. But it is on the bar menu..

  3. There are 297 reviews of this company on Tripadvisor and they get four and a half stars. Maybe you should read some and in particular any one star reviews, which might indicate missing the ship. I suspect anybody who did would make a point of doing a bad review! If you cannot find any trace of this happening to anybody, then I would consider that made them pretty reliable.

  4. I am more than aware but it is still in France so maybe rather than confusing people more they did not put it in the British Isles/Western Europe forum

No, you are again missing the point. Nothing wrong with having a ‘France’ section, it is putting it under the heading of ‘Mediterranean’ that is wrong.

  5. Yes, I always use the app. Doubt I shall bother to make the effort to go to the appropriate webpage. Seems a backward step when everything is on an app these days!

Also wonder if they will make the most important change and sort out the idiotic incorrect ports of call designations, where Le Havre for example comes under ‘Med Ports’.

  6. We stayed at Santa Chiara. It was an easy walk from port and then took bus next morning to airport. Not many bridges to cross, if I remember correctly.

We stayed at Santa Chiara in August. There were no bridges to cross at all from Piazzale Roma where the airport buses arrive and depart from and also the People Mover to the cruise terminals.

  7. We stayed at the Santa Chiara in August and loved it. And it is in a great position. However, be sure to book a room in the main hotel and not the annexe. All the bad reviews are for those rooms!

You are unlikely to find anybody who has stayed at all three hotels to make a comparison. Suggest you read the Tripadvisor reviews, get online prices, then make a decision.

  8. Thanks everyone for all the information/help. I did notuce special departures, however, the ship I'm sailng on wasn't listed. It will be my 1st time in Italy. Person I communicated with said I'd be back at 4pm if bus leaves at 3 (thought ride was 1 1/2 hours). From what I've read will need shuttle back to ship, want to make sure I'll have plenty of time. I'm used to all onboard 30 minutes prior not 1 hour.

According to the port schedule, your ship does not sail until 19.00!

  9. I think you can. Their website has "special departures" for ships with short port days.

    http://www.civitatours.com/en/tours/special-departure/

They would not be in business very long if their clients keep missing the boat!

But do confirm with them again to make you feel safer. And remind them when you get in the van that morning. Chances are you will not be the only passenger from your ship on the tour.

Just seen this reply. That is an excellent link you have found and certainly does seem like they can be relied upon to leave at 3 for the OP.

  10. I received a response back from them. They said tour would leave Rome at 3 which would mean less time at the stops which I prefer. The website says leaves 4:30. Can trust the response?

I wouldn’t like to say whether you can trust the reply. However, you would expect them to run the tours to fit in with the ships in port. You could reconfirm on the day before boarding the bus, I suppose. Your ship is leaving very early for Civi, they do usually leave later than that.

  11. Having cruised on about 15 different lines and loyal to none, I would say Fred’s ‘cuisine’ is amongst the best in actual fact. Not the constant lobster you get on Oceania, but as I don’t like lobster that is fine with me! And they certainly make better scones than Oceania! If you want to see sample menus, they can be found on this page, together with dress code info: https://www.fredolsencruises.com/our-ships/dining-and-restaurants.

All cruise lines have their pros and cons, none are perfect. We choose by the itinerary, as that is the most important aspect for us.

  12. Services is not part of our plan. I know nothing about Budapest and just trying to find a centrally located, safe place for accommodations.

I did more research and it looks like Budapest V is where I should stay. Then again,...so much info on the internet.

I have posted over at the Tripadvisor board and have zero responses.

You have actually had several responses on the TA forum!

  13. I just wanted to let you know that Fred does not require a jacket and tie every evening, just trousers and a collared shirt. The jacket and tie are required on formal nights, of which there are maybe three per 14 night cruise. And you could skip that and eat in the buffet that night if you wanted to.

Incidentally, we have cruised on both lines. We found HAL had almost nothing going on during sea days, whereas Fred has plenty of activities such as lectures, dance classes, arts and crafts. Both lines attract older people, Fred tends to be over 60, whereas HAL seemed to be more over 80!

  14. On their website, when you are looking at a particular tour, the tour price should be a drop down menu with prices for differing numbers of people. If you want to gather more people it will reduce the price per person, certainly. To do that, you should join your roll call and ask for interested people to contact you.

We have used Tours by Locals several times successfully, but not in Cadiz. Recommend you read the reviews for the particular guide on their website.
