  1. Stayed at the Verdanza November 5th thru the 7th and loved it! Have stayed precruise probably 7 times in different hotels and rest assured the property is clean, hotel personnel top notch, like the other poster said within walking distance to the Embassy, which has a casino, and authentic Puerto Rican Food at Mi Casita, in the strip mall down the street. The beach is also within walking distance! I wouldn't hesitate to book Verdanza in the future.

Thank you for your positive feedback. I think we will have dinner at Mi Casita.

  2. Was the island that you had the bbq on private? I had read both that its on a private island and others said its back on St. Croix for the BBQ?

    Thanks!

Lunch is back on St. Croix, but it feels like a private island. What I mean by this is that there are no other hotels, restuarants, or buildings within sight. They bbq in an area pushed back within the mangroves where a number mongoose and a few cats hang out for any leftovers. While the crew is cooking, you are free to lounge on the beach and enjoy the views or can hang out on well shaded benches where they bbq.

  3. I have a current reservation at the Verdanza Hotel in a club room that includes a daily continential breakfast. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences at this hotel or their continental breakfast? Also, I am looking for a nice place for dinner that is within walking distance.

  4. We are taking a day trip with Kuralu as well in April. Let us know how it was and how long you were on Jost during the day trip. We appreciate any information on the day trip. Thanks.

Just back from Kuralu. We had a great time with Captain Gary. We spent enough time to swim to the beach grab some drinks at a few bars, and swim back. Maybe an hour and a half tops. This was enough time for us, as we are not the lay out all day on a beach type. The snorkeling at Sandy Spit was also pretty good, not the best we have seen, but the coral is appeared to be very healthy. You will have a great time.

  5.

Are you out of STT and your boat be stopping in Great Harbor for passport processing and lunch and Foxy's show before going to White Bay? Or are you out of VG or Tortola?

We are taking Kuralu from our cruise ship stop in Tortola. We will stop at Sandy Spit before going to White Bay on Jost.

  6. Given your explanation I checked to see what phase of the moon March 17th is. It is a full moon so I am not sure that the explanation hold.

I have emailed Royston again and will see what happens.

    Cindy

After further research, March 17th or every full moon is the 15th day, which is a day of Sabbath. Therefore, Royston will not be working that day.

  7. Welcome back to this nice weather in Cleveland. I too booked our cruise based on the ports. We are going on the Tortola route. If you don't mind sharing what you did at each port, besides the St. Kitts, as you already stated your displeasure with the unfortunate events that took place. I have planned to to the following:

Tortola: Kuralu charter to Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke

    St Maarten: Captain Bob Cass

    St Kitts: Royston Tour

Dominca: Nature Isle Explorers Jewel Tour

    Barbados: Calabaza charter

I am intersted in hearing what you did as we are excited more about the ports than the ship.

  8. Given your explanation I checked to see what phase of the moon March 17th is. It is a full moon so I am not sure that the explanation hold.

Thank you for rejecting my theory for an explanation. I agree that these responses are strange. I hope you get a better explanation or are able to go on his tour.

  9. We just booked with Gina (8 of us) for May 14th ! What kind of drinks are available? Is it a full bar or a few specialty mixed drinks? Thanks in advance!

I just received this reply from Gina. We are going on Calabaza in a month.

our bar is soda, tonic, diet coke, coke, sprite and ginger ale, orange and pineapple juice

white wine, beer, rum punch, rum, gin and vodka

Lunch is typically, beef or chicken, potatoes or pasta, fish, caesar salad, coleslaw, mixed salad, couscous, rice and garlic bread

  10. We too are looking at doing this on our trip to St Maarten,, I was wondering what type of food and beverage gets served?

Do you go to Maho beach and see planes? thanks

We went with Captain Bob on our cruise this past September. It was so good that I just booked him again for our cruise in February. The food is provided by a restaurant right on the beach. Captain Bob, that was who we had, took our orders on the boat prior to arriving so he could call in our orders to save on time. You had your choice of Mahi Mahi, BBQ Ribs, or Half Chicken. Mahi Mahi and BBQ Ribs are the two highly suggested choices. My wife had the Mahi and I had the Ribs, both were excellent in our opinions. Entrees come with a side of rice or side of fries. They also come with a garden salad. The plates are big to fill up on. The drinks on board are Heineken, Coors Lite, bottled water, Coke, Diet Coke, and Sprite. The drinks at lunch are not included, but I highly recommend the guavaberry colada with your lunch at the beach restaurant. If you email Captain Bob, he could tell you exactly what he serves in case I may have forgotten anything or messed up the drink list.

Our trip missed the planes landing and/or taking off at Maho. We did make a stop at Maho, but Captain Bob saw that the large plane already landed. This did not take anything away from the great time we had or the overall trip. This is a 360 degree trip around St Maarten with multiple stops to enjoy the scenery and the marine life. Missing a plane taking off or landing did not ruin anything in my opinion. Maybe this next trip we will see one, but if we don't again this time, I won't care.

  11. Luni-solar calendar (LSC) is based on each lunation or month, beginning at dawn following the moon's conjunction with the sun. The first day of each month is called New Moon Day and is observed by abstaining from common labor and in worshipful consecration of oneself to Yahuwah, the Creator. Each month consists of either 29 or 30 days. In the 30 day months, the last Sabbath is followed bytranslation day, then New Moon Day, both of which are not counted as part of any week. Four complete weeks of seven days follows: six days of work, then the Sabbath which always occurs on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th of the LSC months.

I was able to book with Royston. I guess this means he will be working on that day as it does not fall on New Moon Day or any of the Sabbath days that occur every 7th day after New Moon Day. If you attempted to book him on a day of a new moon or any week of the new moon, he will not be working. This is my interpretation of his responses.

  12. You've jumped over to the dark side!!!;):D

Looking forward to my up and coming WJ dining!!!:)

I am jumping over to the dark side as well. Last cruise was in September on the Jewel of the Seas. This was the first time I had any dinners in the Windjammer of my 7 previous cruises on Royal Caribbean. I was surprised how good the food and selection was. The two items that stood out to me being excellent were the Indian chicken curry and the chicken cordon bleu. We are going on the Jewel of the Seas again the last week of February. I am planning on eating all dinners at the Windjammer except for one night each in Chops and Portofino. I am not packing any formal wear. I plan on packing just a pair of pants and two shirts for those two nights in the specialty restuarants.

  13. No discounts offered, from other postings on here I have gathered that he had booked a private tour as well and basically overbooked for the day. To be honest, it takes a lot for me to get upset on vacation, so it really didn't bother me. Was more just putting it out there for those that it would upset. I'm not sure how many seat belts there were to be honest. Best part was we have stayed in touch with the new friends we made crammed in the back seat, so there's always a positive.

Hey. Is this Brian, the guy that took some of our pictures with our camera as we didn't have the correct angle out our window? I believe I still owe you a rum punch.

I agree with your comments that the tour was a great deal for only $25 pp for all of the places we visited, the beer, water, and rum punch being included. I think that we did get a discount as it would have been $35 pp if we didn't fill the van. Our driver was very good at pointing out the highlights along the way as well. I am glad you made the best of the situation being crammed until Amy opted to sit on the cooler to make room. I believe I owe her a rum punch now too.

  14. We just did the day pass last week through Island Divers. We were picked up by Robert and his crew at the small dock just past the stores in front of the ship. Many people are willing to point you in the direction where to be picked up.

Included in the pass is lunch and two drinks each, snorkel gear, towels, and use of kayaks. We had plenty of time to swim, snorkel, eat lunch and relax on the beach. For lunch the two of us shared a starter and dessert and each ordered our own main course. Addtional drinks can be purchased outside of the two drink limit, but since water was available on the beach, the two drinks was plenty for us. The snorkeling was pretty good being right from the beach. Robert had us back in plenty of time for us to shop and have some cheap Piton beer (2 for $3) right near the shops before heading back to the ship. I would do this again if we visit St. Lucia on a crusie ship again.

  15. You couldn't have picked a more central location in OSJ. We stayed there in 2010 and it was a good choice. We chose an inside room, because we wanted to avoid the street noise. There is often a lively party that goes on in the plaza in front at night (and it was that night), so if you plan an early bedtime, the interior rooms are great.

I wish I could have gotten some of the history on the building. I was intrigued by the high wooden doors and wondered just how old they were. You had to remind yourself that it was an incredibly old building when you were in your room because frankly, there wasn't much that indicated that -- other than the very high ceilings.

Be prepared for the SLOW elevator. I timed the descent when we left ... it was about 30 seconds per floor. And it was tiny. We barely fit the two of us and our luggage onto it. We only used the elevator when we hauled the luggage up and brought it back down the next day. Otherwise, we used the stairs that wind around the back of the elevator. I think a step is supposed to be about a 7-inch rise ... If I recall correctly, many of them were more like 12.

I got the impression that the central space between the rows of interior rooms was open to the sky at one point in time, but it is now enclosed. However, it's so narrow, it really can't be called an atrium. It is, however, an architectural oddity.

The rooms were very tastefully decorated and the bathroom was small, but in great condition. The air conditioner did it's best, so the room wasn't stuffy, but I would have welcomed a couple of degrees cooler.

And it was all part of the adventure. If I return to San Juan for an overnight some day, I will likely stay there again.

We stayed there a few years ago when it was Howard Johnson. We also picked an inside room and it was perfect. Didn't hear any noise. The room when clean and comfortable. The location was incredible- We will be staying there again on our upcoming cruise in December.

Thank you for the positive notes. I found a great deal for an interior queen room without a window. This does not bother me as we are in an inside room on our cruise. It looks like I will be using the stairs to carry our luggage. I don't think I could wait 30 seconds per floor in a small elevator.

  16. My wife and I went on South Coast Horizon's Jeep Safari tour while on the AOS the week of October 11. This was one of our favorite excursions. We were greeted and taken well care of by if I remember his name I think it was Ricky. It was just the two of us so this made for a special trip. We met the guide/driver outside the gate near the taxi stand holding their sign. We started off in the jeep on our way to Devil's bridge while driving he was narrating highlights along the roadside as we passed. The view at Devils Bridge is amazing. Seeing this area in person is way better than any pictures you see. From there we went to a Cliffside where there were old remains where they used to hold gun powder and you could see Eric Clapton's estate across the bay. At some point we were given fresh pineapple to snack on. Then we drove until we got to their facilities. The Kayak portion is short and narrow but for us was just the right amount of kayak especially since we kayak to their private beach and then back after we were done with the snorkeling, lunch and time at the beach. The snorkeling was very nice at Cades Reef. Much of the reef has been damaged by hurricanes but there was still plenty of fish to be seen and was very shallow to snorkel through. Lunch was very good with jerk chicken, rice, mixed greens, rum punch and fruit punch. Their punch is the best. After lunch the chicken bones were used to lure in a mongoose that we both saw for the first time. Then we hit the ocean and beach for more relaxation before kayaking back. Finally we were guided back to the ship with more narration on the way. Our tour guide was the most professional and kind and easy to talk with at all our stops to ask questions or to strike up a conversation. He even asked us if the ride was too bumpy which it was not. He would slow down around bumps and honk going around corners to warn possible cars coming from the other direction. I am so happy that we did this tour. The jeep has seating for up to eight, but to be comfortable I think no more than six should be on this tour at one time.
