We got off the Sunrise on Monday, and we enjoyed our cruise!  My hubby and I cruised with our two adult sons and granddaughter, and it was a first cruise for one of my sons, so I really wanted him to enjoy it.  I was on the Horizon last year and thoroughly enjoyed that ship, never felt crowded at all - in fact, there were a few times I looked at my husband and said, “Where are all the people”!!!  This ship felt a little more crowded, but nothing crazy - but as others said, we tried to avoid the buffet by eating breakfast and dinner in the MDR.  We had absolutely amazing waiters (and waitress!); we all had tears in our eyes with hugs to go around after our last meal there 😢

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous posters about some of the more negative aspects of this ship and cruise.  We got off to a little bit of a rocky start when embarkation was delayed, apparently due to the ship inviting TA’s to view the rooms before we could board.  When the initial boarding started, we were among the earlier groups, having purchased FTTF.  The TA’s were still looking at rooms and one on the list was ours!  For the most part they were gracious about not insisting they come into our room once we arrived, but there were a few who still wanted to view our room asking if they could come in (which we allowed) and one man was downright nasty about it when we said we wanted privacy.  My hubby suggested he take it up with the captain, as we had paid for our room and had already allowed a few to view it 😉.  So it was a chaotic start.

There was definitely a foul odor near the aft elevators every day (our room was a balcony on 7 aft), but apart from having to walk through the casino to get from point A to point B, I didn’t notice cigarette smoke much.  We were discouraged seeing the rust on our balcony and how dirty the balcony glass was  - come on, the ship just came out of a huge renovation not even two months prior to our cruise!  It was obvious they hadn’t touched the outside of those balcony rooms, even the deck flooring looked beat up.  But our room was very nice, and we still enjoyed sitting outside for some peaceful time.  Speaking of peaceful time, this cruise must have attracted many who could’ve cared less about keeping peace!  Obviously not Carnival’s fault, but it will give me pause in the future about picking cruises.  And the funny thing was, there weren’t a ton of kids on this ship - it was actually the adults who were acting out.  We witnessed a fight that was happening in the buffet area; we were eating at the Lucky soup station, when we heard a woman screaming - we thought maybe someone was choking or a child was drowning.  A few passengers jumped up to run to help, but turns out it was a massive fight between family members in the buffet area, with tables and chairs being overturned.  And I’m seeing there were other outbreaks of fights on the ship for that cruise.  Not good!  It definitely put a damper on our day when we witnessed that happening......

We thought the food was delicious and, all in all, we very much enjoyed our cruise!  But I’d have to say that I definitely preferred the Horizon over the Sunrise, and probably wouldn't book the Radiance knowing what I know now, even though we prefer to cruise out of the northeast.

What cabin were you in? We are in 7430 next month....I'm having a really hard time getting excited with all the negative reviews, that's for sure! But I'm stuck now, so it is what it is. I'd love to see pics if you had the same cabin we'll be in!!!

I heard the same things when I sailed on the Sunshine and yet my family had a great time.   We are sailing on the Sunrise at the end of July and looking forward to it.  I hope you have a wonderful time and don't let the negativity get to you - you are going on a cruise!!!

Have a great cruise!!! Make sure you update us when you get back!! ❤️

Don't worry about them and their negativity..

You keep thinking like this until August, they will have turned you and you will not have a good time.

    You will have FUN.

Who started this thread about positivity...

    Practice what you preach 🙂

If you go into it hoping to have fun, you probably will.  People post similar things about the Sunshine all the time- it's been my favorite ship so far.  So you never know, til you try it for yourself. What matters to other people may not matter to you.  And you may not notice what others do.

Also, I see you're not sailing until September.  By that point, most schools are going to be back in session and the ship is likely going to be less crowded.  Read summer reviews on most ships, and you'll see a lot more mentions about the crowding than you do on reviews written in say early December, or February.  That's not to say some ships don't handle crowds better than others- they do.  But the problem is worse when kids are off school and sailing.

The sewage smell tends to come and go- I think I've smelled it at some point on very cruise I've been on.  Sometimes it lingers, sometimes it's quick.  That's not a Sunrise only thing, I don't think.

We are actually sailing August 19th, which is why I am a little worried about crowds. I usually have a really good attitude about things, so I'm surprised the negativity is bringing me down so much. I'm really trying to rally. Thanks for the cheerleading! ❤️

I agree. It is a bit confusing. Both are nonrefundable, but Cruise Cash seems universal. In your case, I think you would benefit with just Cruise Cash, unless, of course, you intend on spending more than $500 during your cruise. I guess Cruise Bar cash supplements Cruise Cash since you can buy both and spend up to $500 on, let's say, jewelry and an additional $500 on drinks.

ohhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! I didn't even think of that!!!! so smart. That makes so much sense! Thank you!!!

  6. People, I am SO bummed with all the horrible reviews about Sunrise. Between the overcrowding, casino smoke and sewage smell that is apparently permeating the entire ship, I'd love to cancel, but I didn't buy the insurance so I'm stuck. That said, does anyone have anything positive to say?? I get it that it's "the worst ship ever" and "smells like a toilet" and it takes 2 hours to get lunch - that blows. But some of us still have to sail on this ship and it would be nice to have something to look forward to.....so who has something positive to say?? Let's keep this thread to only shiny happy Sunrise thoughts and pictures! Help a sister out!

  7. I feel like this is probably a dumb question but I'm going to ask anyway.....

I'm trying to hoard some Cruise Cash prior to my 8/19 sailing. I assume it will mostly be spent on drinks, with some specialty dining & excursions for good measure. Website says Cruise Cash can be spent anywhere, but then I noticed that there is specific Cruise Cash that can be only used at the bar. Should I be buying both?? I guess I'm just confused as to why they have specific Cruise Cash Bar if you can just use regular Cruise Cash at the bar also. Am i making sense? I guess my question is, can i use plain Cruise Cash at the bar or do I need to buy specific BAR Cruise Cash for drinks? TIA

I found this nifty little site... https://www.suncalc.org/

Enter date/city and you will get the track of the sun for that day.

What it showed is that in July the sun will be just south of the ship from late morning to late afternoon the sun will be in the south.

What this means is that while the ship is travelling south from NY the aft will not be in direct sun.  Travelling north you will have direct sun.

Wow!!!! This is AWESOME! And I am really thankful you broke it down for me too cuz I'd sitting here like "...ok...so when we are going south the sun will be...wait...wait..when we are going...oh gosh..wait..." LOL I get confused easily. Thank you again! so cool!

  9. Every time we dock in Grand Cayman we have to get our fish tacos and Painkiller fix at the Sunshine Grill. The tacos are crazy delicious and the Painkillers go down easy....It's in The Sunshine Suites and it's the hotel's little poolside bar and grill...open air, nice and relaxing, and every time I'm there, I just want to jump right in the pool after lunch.

Well, when i booked it for this August, they still hadn't announced the name change or update.   I was just glad to have something booked.   I am excited to see the updates and to cruise on a like-new-ship, something i've not done before, so you'll get no complaints from me.   I am ready to go!!! just 6 more months....

We are on Sunrise this august too! Which sailing are you on? We are so excited!!!

  11. I've had a regular balcony before, but this summer will by my first time with an aft extended balcony (eeeeee!!!). We are sailing on the Sunrise....what do you guys think about getting a tan out there on a lounger? Do you think the balcony glass is at too much of an angle to let the sun in enough to lay out? If I don't have to fight for a lounger on Lido and can get a killer tan on my balcony, I may never leave....

We enjoyed both on our cruise on Sunshine in December, but Steakhouse for sure!  And you should be offered the free bottle of house wine (or half off any other bottle), since it is Day 2 of cruise - go for the half-off bottle, some good selections available, and the half-off brings the price back down to something close to retail.

    LOVE this info!!! Thank you!!!!!

We actually cancelled Cucina for hubby's birthday because they changed the menu, Nona's meatballs is now one not so great meatball and the carbonara is totally gone. I've heard you can ask in advance for the carbonara, but there is no guarantee. The new menu has been disappointing to us and we always dined there at least once for dinner each cruise.

Oh no!!!!! What a total bummer!!! Thank you for that info!!!

  14. Hi All!

We (my husband, 8 year old son and myself) will be sailing on the Sunrise in August. While it's not a cruise FOR my birthday, my birthday happens to fall on day 2 - a sea day. I was thinking it would be nice to do something a little special...food is my jam and i love it all, so I don't really have a preference for one over the other food-wise, but what do you guys think? Feel free to post pictures of your meals from both as well! Thanks!!!!

  15. Hi Everyone! I am looking to book Alaska for August of 2021...I've never sailed NCL before so I'm not familiar with their time frame of releasing itineraries. Can anyone shed some light on to when I might expect to be able to book? Thanks!!!
