  1. I can't speak to Viking as I have never sailed with them but I have been to Italy on a land vacation and cruise, both in the last two years. Italy was the only thing on my bucket list. Friends who were scheduled to go with us on the first trip backed out because of all the problems in the world but I never regretted going.

In 2016 we flew to Rome, spent a few days and then went to Venice by train. Both of these cities need more than a port day in my opinion. I was never uncomfortable and we got around easily and there was help if needed. It was the trip of a

lifetime. Last year we took a MSC cruise out of Genoa to Venice with many ports in between. It was perfect. Not a lot of bells and whistles but it was very inexpensive and every day was a port day. We spent the day in port and ate and fell asleep. The ship was really not important and I am

glad I did not spend a lot of money on it. That being said, the ship was great, food good and nothing beats the sites I saw from our balcony.

No matter what ship you choose, pick an itinerary you want and build in time at the beginning and/or end of your cruise to see more of the cities that interest you most.

  2. I always leave the tips on my account and would even if I received lousy service from someone as I consider it a service charge. There are other ways to deal with lousy service.

I just returned from a three day land vacation in Chicago with my grandchildren and my tips there exceeded what we would be automatically charged on a cruise ship (meals, taxi, doorman).

  3. My opinion is that comparing a cruise line against another does not really tell the whole story. There are many differences between ships within the same cruise line. There are also differences as cruise lines change over the years and what you really like about a cruise line or ship could quickly change.

We have been on six different cruise lines and consider Royal Caribbean our favorite. Last year I went on the Carnival Conquest with friends and was surprised by how much I liked it. I am taking my husband on it this winter. He is going to like the ports, dining options and comedy club.

My recommendation would be to try different ships and cruise lines and different ports. They all have more similarities than differences. I have never had a bad cruise on any ship.

  4. My daughter has had two serious bouts of this and was hospitalized each time it was so bad. Both happened when she moved her head "just so" and came on immediately. Doctor's have finally determined that it is sinus/allergy related. It happened both times at almost the same week. She takes daily sinus meds and it has not happened again. Both times it happened it took a long time to get over. Exercises for this also helped. She flies and cruises without any problems.

  5. I would agree that one day is not enough for Venice and Rome. We love to cruise but our first trip to Italy was four nights in Rome and three in Venice. Flew into Rome, out of Venice with the high speed train between the two. The next year we took a MSC cruise from Genoa with a stop in Rome that ended in Venice. In the Caribbean we travel for ship and ports. In Europe, we travel for ports. We were so glad we had a balcony. We could see many of the towns as we passed by Greece, Croatia and Montenegro. The view heading into Venice early in the morning was amazing.

  6. They enforced the dress code the last two years when we were there. When you are touring Rome, there are many churches that you will want to stop in that have the same dress code. Men can wear lightweight pants and women can wear lightweight pants or a dress below the knee and you will not be any warmer than wearing shorts and will fit in better. We saw very few people wearing shorts in Rome and it was hot.
