Today is Charlotte Town, PEI.  We didn’t do a tour but walked around the nice little town, and had lunch.  The weather cooperated and a light jacket was plenty since the sun decided to show itself for a brief spell.  As I type this cloud cover is winning the battle and it looks like the promised late afternoon rain might be on schedule.  The first clue was the umbrellas at the gangplank area for passengers to take if desired.

We visited in 2017 on Mariner. Very pretty little town. Our lunch was closer to the port and the lobster was magnificent!

Not the same! Montreal smoked meat completely different from corned beef. Smoked, not brined. It's closer to pastrami, but still not quite the same.

If I had a stop in Montreal, I'd skip all ship excursions and stand in line at Schwartz's Deli for a medium-fat smoked meat sandwich. On rye (sourdough! The heathens! At least they don't put *shudder* mayonnaise on it ). 🤤

You are correct of course but that is what most Americans would call it. In the UK it's salt beef. Either way it's an indulgent delicacy . And yes to Schwartz's Deli! Found the only shop in Toronto that had smoked meat couple years ago and brought several pounds back to the US.

Must disagree. The walk-in closet on the Marina and Riv.iera are dark, and no larger in utility than the Vista’s 2 closets. With the mirror in between and the ceiling lighting they seem airy, with lots of room. Perhaps not as much floor space but certainly lots of long and medium hanger space. Look forward to using them on May 20th.

Sorry, but a walk-in closet hides all the "stuff" you toss in there and keeps the rest of the cabin neat. It also doubles as a dressing room and a place to store your luggage.

  4. And so I conclude that nobody knows what the actual schedule is for the Starlink upgrade on O ships.  I understand the science from this who posted about usage, pipeline, etc., but the "proof in the pudding"  is  after it's installed and real life tested. So, Unless anyone has actual knowledge of the install schedule, I'll leave you to your bandwidth discussions.

(Full disclosure, I spent 17 years working for Honeywell and Digital in a previous life)

How did Regent handle your flight out of Barbados?
Our Feb. 2024 cruise ends in Barbados, we are using Regent for our flight home and paid the deviation fee.  After looking at possible flights, I see only 2 flights leave each day 7:10 am and 4:40 pm. I’m assuming Regent will try and put us on the 4:40 pm flight which has overnight layovers in DFW or MIA.  I foresee problems and have questions.
    1. How can Regent get all its passengers on the 4:40 pm flight?
    2. If it cannot, does Regent put disembarked passengers up in a hotel overnight in Barbados so to place them on the 7:10 am flight?  (7:10 am flight is much better for us).

    3.  If Regent books us on the 4:40 pm flight with long overnight layover will they book us into a hotel in DWF or MIA?
I know I should be talking with Regent about this but want to be better informed before I do. Any information regarding flying out of Barbados using Regent would be appreciated.

I assume you are on the Miami to Barbados cruise. American Airlines is the best (and maybe only choice) to fly direct back to MIA from Barbados . We took the air credit and booked our own. It's only a 4 hour flight and I would HIGHLY suggest you book your own air on the AA 4:40 PM flight now.

The issue with the legacy system is not just the uplink bandwidth but the satellite capacity.  Just look at the Caribbean using cruise mapper and consider the bandwidth needed for ALL the ships under the satellites footprint.

Good news is that NCL is rolling out Starlink,  Regents Encore will get it during a 7 day drydock in May.

It is fairly easy to install (having done several) and Musk now claims worldwide coverage of the Maritime Starlink service (then again it is Elon making the claim).   Obviously the ship will maintain the EMC system as it likely will still handle the ships service data plus of course the TV/Entertainment downlinks and maybe the crew internet??

Given the increasing number of days where TV is not available due to "port interference", I hope they can do the downlinks from Starnet.

  8. We were on the previous cruise from Santiago to BA by way of Antarctica . South America was experiencing an early fall in terms of weather. Yes, the ship was cold at times but when the outside temp is at best only in the upper 50's... As to Covid, there were a few, and I emphasize few, cases but no crew wore masks and we were not aware of anyone with covid having serious issues ( we knew 2 people who had it and twiddled their thumbs in their suites for 5 days before being released) We thought the food was fine in all venues except for POLO where the service  was atrociously slow as usual. Terrace, Jacques, Red Ginger were superb. I agree about the CD, very annoying.

The weather caused us to miss two stops. Puerto Chacabuco, Chile, due to thunderstorms ,high seas, and 40 mph winds and Elephant Island, Antarctica due to ice fog and ice flows ( no desire to reenact Titanic. ) In both cases the Captain clearly explained the reasons why we were avoiding those stops. We also thought Marina was in GREAT shape and all in all we had a great cruise.

Not very easily. The nearest station, called Percy Main, is about a 20 minute walk from the cruise terminal. That’s on the self-contained Tyne & Wear Metro, which runs frequently into Newcastle city centre and stops at Central station where you can catch mainline trains to York, Durham & Edinburgh.

In reality it’s easiest to take a cab from the cruise terminal to the city/Central station.

    Thanks!
