  1. I am trying to decide between 2 cruises. Here are the choices:

    1. Carnival Dream 7 nights from New Orleans (new Port) going to Jamaica (new port), Grand Cayman and Cozumel

    2. RCCL Freedom of the Seas 8 nights from Ft Lauderdale going to St Kitts, St Maarten, San Juan, Labadee.

Price is fairly similar per day. Which would you choose and why.

We are a extended family of 6 ranging in age from 16 to 87. This is my MIL first cruise but the rest of us have many cruises under our belts.

This is a tough choice- I really like the POC for Freedom (and for the price, you'll get 8 days for around the price of 7), but... I LOVE NOLA. It's my favorite city. I take my family often and spend 7-10 days at a time just exploring the city and surrounding areas. So- for me, I'd choose Dream just to have a few days pre or post cruise to spend in New Orleans.

  2. If you don't mind my hijacking the post a little:

What's a good hotel in Baltimore that will let you leave you leave your car during your cruise? Many thanks.

    Matt

    Raleigh, NC

Holiday Inn Express down on Russell Street has a package deal- stay one night with 8 nights of parking. The hotel is kind of in a weird area though- it is right in between M&T Bank Stadium (Ravens) and Camden Yards (Orioles) so if wanting to catch a game before you cruise this would be a perfect spot, but other than for that you are not really walking distance to anything aside from the Casino (well, let me add- no where that you'd feel safe to walk to at night). http://www.hiebaltimorehotel.com/baltimore-cruise-port

Or- look into hotels that are further out- near BWI airport. Not much nightlife around the airport hotels but Inner Harbor area/ Canton area are only 30 minutes away so if you have your car you can easily drive to have a nice meal and see some touristy sights.

  3. The closest Hilton property to port, distance wise, would be Hilton or Hampton Inn next to the convention center.

With that said, I would stay at the Homewood Suites or HGI near Harbor East, much better area than the convention center, which is basically deserted at night.

Agreed- although Inner Harbor is not too far of a walk from the Convention Center.

  4. Sorry I thought I had completed the thread post.

It should read "which would you chose for MIL First cruise" Mother in Law.

I cannot go back and correct that now.

LMAO!!! Whew...I thought this was going to be a very different type of thread. Where I'm from, "MILF" stands for something very different. :')

  5. Allstate Drivewise rewards has the $500 cards right now. I am through checking AARP!

I just signed up for the Allstate rewards program (received 5,000 points) watched a few videos (earned another 3,000 points). Bought a $500 card for 5,000 points and then three $100 cards (using the other 3,000 points). So $800 in gift cards for $720. Score!!! And I do not have AllState for any of my insurance...

Going right now to apply it to my account and pay for my CHEERS program for hubby and myself. :-)

  6. We are going on the Legend this August . I know they don't have a big screen outdoors but do they show movies inside anywhere like the theatre ? Thanks so much

Yes they do- in the Firebird lounge. Not every night, but on certain nights they will show movies when there is no comedy show scheduled (at least this is what occurred in 2016... I am assuming they will continue for 2017 sailings ;))

  7. The daily service charge (tips) are charged to your room on a daily basis The charge is about $13 per person per day. This cover your room steward , MDR staff and staff that do service that you don't see. This isn't to start war on whether to tip or not.

I don't believe that was the intent of their post... they were simply stating that it's good to also bring extra cash for tips (cabin steward, server from MDR, bartenders, etc.- most people like to leave a little extra in cash). At least that is the way that I read their post since OP mentioned bringing cash for ports, casino, bingo... ;)

  8. I understand they have this on the Liberty and the Conquest. My first question - is this a one event type thing? Second question - where is it usually held? Third question - can you attend and just buy clothing items? TIA!!!

It's held in the camp area- days and times will be listed in your FunTimes.

Sure you can just buy some clothes- we did that many times (we didn't want a new bear but she needed a new Carnival shirt ;))

  9. There aren't a lot of drinks over $12 so it really isn't as great as it sounds. I know theres a list somewhere where people have scoured the ships looking for high price drinks but there really aren't that many. Most drinks are in the $7-12 range.

That may be true, but as long as it isn't a premade type of drink (DoD are usually a premade mix), you can always upgrade the liquor used. For example- order a margarita but ask for Patron or Don Julio. ;)

  10. My kids loved the camp- they went mainly in the evening. It was so nice for hubby and I to have a nice quiet dinner in the MDR and then go see a show or grab a drink or two. But day time was time we spent together either at the pool, in port, playing some bingo, etc....;)

HMC was our favorite beach day- since it's just the 2 of you I'd just go with renting a nice clamshell on the beach. ;)

We did the snorkel with Stingrays while in Grand Turk- my son, husband and I loved it. (my daughter preferred to just stay on the beach and watch instead of snorkel).

I agree with what others have mentioned about Freeport... maybe debark and grab some souvenirs but other than for that you may want to just stay on ship.

  11. Beautiful beach! We loved it!!

There is something special about playing in that beautiful blue water... with the ship in the background. Heaven!!

We rented a Cabana and loved it in August a couple of years ago. It was lovely to bring the food back from buffet and sit in our private area with a lovely misting fan... ahhhhh!!

  12. NCL. So far, we've cruised Carnival because of price and proximity to ports NY, Boston, & Baltimore. Now the prices have gone up, and no cruises out of Boston, and limited NYC cruises and same old same old Baltimore cruises. NCl has better prices right from our home port and interesting itineraries for us. 2018 & 2019 NCL.

100% agree! Maybe when my kids were younger it may have been Disney (if I could have afforded it- those rates- YIKES!!), but now for us it will be NCL. It was a difficult decision when I chose Carnival over NCL for our August cruise to Alaska, but it came down to cost.

As Carnival's prices continue to rise and the cost difference between NCL and Carnival shrinks, I will probably be more inclined to choose NCL next cruise just to have some new ports to visit (my home port is Baltimore).

  13. I currently live in Baltimore- most years we are just cold and rainy for Thanksgiving, but there have been many years I can remember having snow for turkey day. Average temp for November here is around 40. If it were my family- I would try to find affordable flights and sail from Miami. If sailing from Baltimore, you may run the risk of having cold/rain or snow, rough seas, etc. until you get closer to South Carolina and beyond.

Nassau is a fun port. Freeport is meh IMO. We've been twice. First time we got off the ship-looked around, bought some touristy souvenirs and then got right back on the ship. Second time we didn't even bother debarking and just stayed on the ship (we did have a kayaking excursion planned, but it was cancelled due to bad weather). :(

Are you sure it is Princess Cays and not Half Moon Cay? Either way- that is probably the best port on the Pride itinerary you mentioned. Private islands are wonderful!!

The itinerary for Splendor sounds a lot more fun IMO, but Pride is a great ship. As long as you go into the cruise knowing that you may not be able to use Waterworks for first 2 days.

    Enjoy your cruise!!

  14. I got our letter as well and was very disappointed however we are making the best of it. On the letter we were offered 25. Per person. To be added to our sail and sign account and have yet to see the credit. Does anyone know when this will be added or have you seen it on your accounts?

Be sure to bring that letter with you- just in case. ;)

  15. I've started using shampoo bars when traveling now- go check out lush.com and take a look at their shampoo bars. Takes up very little space when packing (it is about the size of a pack of gum) and they have different types (for dry hair, oily hair, etc). They last approx. 2 or 3 months so it is worth it IMO. I still pack a leave in conditioner to keep the frizzies in check.

And I like the body wash provided in the cabins, but my DD has dry skin/eczema so I'll pack some aveeno for her.

  16. Ok, so I'm sure I'll get flamed for the heresy of bringing electronics on vacation but here goes. Let's say I brought my windows laptop, my iphone and my Kindle Fire with me aboard ship. Then I purchase Carnival's top tier wifi plan. Now, I realize that I can switch back and forth between devices but what if I wanted my iphone AND my laptop connected at the same time? Can I share the connection between multiple devices by either 1. Using Windows 10's hotspot feature? 2. Third party software like "Connectify"? or 3. A wifi to wifi travel router? Has anyone had any success with this?

It definitely sounds possible... I guess the real question is how fast will your speeds be? Will it be worth splitting the connection if it slows both of your devices down to the point where nothing loads. Hopefully someone who has accomplished this recently will be able to let us all know.

  17. Is this a recent change? We cruised in August and the Night Owls fee was as it's always been - $6.75 per hour + gratuity. Night owls starts @ 10:00pm. Your child would have to stay at least 4 hours every night just for that flat fee to make sense.

I know of a fee for cuddly bear workshop depending on what you choose and the theme parties are usually about $15.00 + gratuity per child.

Some nights they will have themed parties where it will be listed as 10pm-1am for a set price, but it's not $35 per kid (that price sounds like for more than 1 child). It's around $18 plus 15% gratuity for 3 hour party (which ends up being a discount from the regular $6.75/hour).

    My kids loved it!

  18. I think any time dining will be our best option. I really only wanted a set dining time to sit with the same people. If we do anytime dining will we be seated with other people? I really enjoy meeting other people and would prefer to.

Folks arriving for YTD are given their own separate tables. So this would only work if you and the other people you wish to dine with (and also have YTD) all arrived at the same time each evening and asked the hostess to sit you together at a table for whatever # in your party. If not, you would have your own separate table.

  19. Yep, we did pretty much the same as everyone else said. My son, now 13, wears nice shorts and polo shirt for dinner, except on formal nights, then we do make him wear a tie, dress shirt, and pants. He is just now wanting to dress up though, so I actually had to go buy him more dress clothes. Of course, in another year, he'll need it (he's going to a Catholic H.S. and they have to wear shirt/tie on some days). He even wanted a suit coat, which I found at a decent price at Burlington Coat Factory! But he is usually in Nike, head to toe any other day of the week! LOL! And yes, after dinner, he's back into his comfy clothes. I haven't forced the dress shoe thing mostly because his feet were growing all crazy and nothing fit comfortably. I have wide feet myself, and I know it's no fun to wear uncomfortable shoes. Nobody really looks at their feet anyway, and his shoes are usually a black color/style, so they're not standing out really.

    (y)Everything that she said!!

My 14 yo is exactly the same- his normal attire is under armor everything  but he will be going to a Catholic HS next year where shirt and tie is the everyday uniform. Thank you for the heads up about Burlington Coat factory for the suit coat- I had been looking at Kohl's and they were $120 or more and I was like "no way". I actually was going to look at Goodwill... I bet I can find a decent sport coat there, but I will head to BCF too.

Anyway, back to OP's question- I agree with what others have said- normal night in MDR he would wear khaki shorts with collared polo type of shirt (what someone would wear to play golf) with some Sperry's and then on formal night he wore dress shirt, tie, dress slacks (first cruise he was young so no jacket but ever since then he has worn the jacket- but that was more for me because I wanted it for pictures).

You'll see all type of attire so you don't need to go out and buy something specifically for the MDR unless you want to. :)

  20. Hi Everyone!

Also, do the age groups ever combine? His cousins are 8 and 6, so in the next age group up. I'm wondering if he'll see them at all or do they keep them completely separated? It's okay if he doesn't, just curiosity.

IIRC they combine for night owls, but not during the day. Enjoy your cruise!! :)
