  1. Check out this thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1774794

I think the Celebrity excursion is Rockley Beach.

Rockley (one of my favourite beaches) is about 2-3 miles south of Carlisle Bay. There is a beach bar with washrooms - used to be called Bar Kanei, then the Sideshore Bistro. Not sure what it's called now.

Not a lot of vendors on the beach, but there are some booths located near the north end of the beach towards Accra.

There is also a man-made reef about 150 yards out from the bar. We would always see turtles there in the morning...

I have a bunch of Rockley photos here:

  2. FWIW, here's my opinion:

Of these islands, you might want to go with St. Thomas or St. Maarten for shopping. St. Thomas has nice beaches, or you can choose to take the ferry over to St. John for even more amazing beaches...

St. Maarten is famous for Maho beach, where planes fly right over your head.

Dominica is lush and green - not really a "beach" island, although some good snorkeling and diving. Check out someone like Levi (Bumpiing Tours). This or St. Lucia are good choices for nature stuff like hikes, waterfalls, etc...

Barbados is probably the best "beach" island out of all of these. Booze cruises are popular here, where you can snorkel with turtles and see some shipwrecks in shallow water.

St. Lucia is like a mix of beaches and lush green. Cosol and Spencer offer land/sea combo excursions or you can look at Spencer's Beach Break where he takes you to Jalousie Beach at the Pitons.

  3. Having food definitely helps to attract the turtles.

We used to swim out every morning to the reef at Rockley Beach. The turtles were always there first thing in the a.m. until about 10:00 or 11:00. Just us and the turtles, no one else...

If you plan on seeing the turtles at Payne's or Carlisle, just watch for the catamarans and swim out to the group.

The cat's usually stop to feed the turtles between 10:00 and 11:00.

If you don't feel like swimming out, hire a local with a boat for $20 to take you out. You might even get free rum punch out of the deal :)

    Cheers, P:)

  4. When we went to Jalousie with Spencer (Feb.14), we were the first ones there. We got two loungers under a palapa for free right in front of the snorkeling area.

The beach was not overly busy when we were there, so there seemed to be enough loungers for everyone in our group. It didn't feel crowded at all.

The loungers in this area are free (nothing fancy, but good enough to sleep off a rum punch buzz). You are not restricted to staying only in this area. You can walk or swim anywhere along this stretch of beach.

The snorkeling area is roped off , so no boats can go into that area. The visibility was quite clear when we were there.

There are a few palapas and natural shade tress in that area - if you get there early enough, finding shade for free shouldn't be a problem...

    Cheers, P:)

  5. Hmmm. Interesting...

We had a great experience with Spencer Ambrose and his Jalousie Beach Break tour in February. We got there before anyone else, so we picked out a couple of nice loungers under a palapa right in front of the area roped off for snorkeling.

It's a nice, sandy beach, but once you're in the water it's rocky, so you'll need water shoes. We found the snorkeling to be pretty decent.

The beach can get a little busy, but we didn't find the boat traffic to be all that bad. The area for snorkeling is roped off, so you're not worried about tangling with boats while you're in there...

All in all, I found this excursion to be one of the better ones we did on our 2-week cruise.

    Cheers, P:)

  6. Great... Now y'all got me craving one of these now, too...

...and macaroni pie. Even with a decent recipe, ours still doesn't turn out as good as they make it on the island. Must be the fresh ocean air that gives it that "je ne sais quoi"...

    P:)

  7. Generally around the high 70's to low 80's if you're sitting in the sun, a little cooler if you're in the shade. There will (almost) always be a nice breeze when you're on deck.

During the day, you'll be fine in a swimsuit or t-shirt and shorts.

At night, you MIGHT need a long sleeved shirt or light sweater/hoodie if it's windy, but I doubt it.

If you plan on lounging on a deck chair in the evenings, there are always blankets and towels available if you find it chilly.

    Cheers, P:)

  8. Bar Kanei at the east end of Rockley sells cutters.

Order it with macaroni pie, Bajan pepper sauce and an ice-cold Banks and you're all set...

    Cheers, P:)

P.S. The bar is now called the Side Shore Beach Bar & Bistro.
